Obama pops into bookstore, backs small businesses (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama has pitched in to help small businesses get into the holiday shopping season.

The president took his daughters, Malia and Sasha, along on a shopping run to a bookstore a few blocks from the White House.

He says he made the visit because it's "small business Saturday" and he wanted to support a small business.

The retail industry is encouraging shoppers to patronize mom-and-pop businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It's a counterpoint to Black Friday and the sales and special deals offered by department stores and other large retailers.

The Obamas walked out with a selection of books including "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever" and "Descent into Chaos: The U.S. and the Disaster in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Central Asia."

Iran says could target Turkey missile shield (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran could target installations in Turkey that are part of a planned NATO missile shield in any future conflict, a senior military official said on Saturday, upping the rhetoric against its neighbor with whom relations have soured in recent months.

"We are ready to attack NATO's missile shield in Turkey if we face a threat and then we will follow other aims," the semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace division, as saying.

Tehran has made clear its displeasure at Turkey's agreement in September to deploy a NATO missile early warning system which it sees as a U.S. ploy to protect Israel from any counter-attack should the Jewish state target Iran's nuclear facilities.

Once warm relations between Iran and Turkey have been strained this year due to the missile shield and Ankara's outspoken criticism of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's violent crackdown on popular unrest.

Turkey and Iran, the Middle East's two major non-Arab Muslim states, are vying for influence in the post-Arab Spring region and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's military adviser accused Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of setting its foreign policy to please Washington.

Major-General Yahya Rahim-Safavi said earlier this week that any attack from Israel would trigger a response from Tehran's Hezbollah allies in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.

"The Zionists know well that if they start a war they will be targeted strongly from South Lebanon, from Hamas and also from Iran," he told state broadcaster IRIB.

SiriProxy enables voice control of third-party apps (video)

If you'll rewind your mind in time to earlier this week, you might remember a clever proxy server from @plamoni that enabled Siri's control of a thermostat through spoken commands. Now, the same bit of engineering has been exploited to enable voice control of third-party applications. In this example, FastPdfKit Reader is manipulated by various commands with SiriProxy acting in the middle. A plugin is used to add new commands to the ones recognized by Siri, and finally, the proxy then sends the final commands to the app. Those hoping to get hacking will find a complete list of instructions from the source link below. For everyone else, you'll find the true magic after the break.

UK Coastguard: 6 people missing after ship sinks (AP)

LONDON ? Six people are missing and two have been rescued after a cargo ship sank in the Irish Sea early on Sunday in gale force winds off the coast of north Wales, British authorities said.

Holyhead Coastguard said the Swanland cargo ship, with eight people on board and carrying thousands of tons of limestone, sent a mayday call reporting that the vessel's hull had cracked in poor weather conditions.

"We are very concerned for the safety of the other six crew members. We know that at least some of them are wearing immersion suits and have strobe lighting with them, however sea conditions are challenging at best," said Jim Green, a coastguard spokesman.

Rescue helicopters from the Royal Air Force base on the Welsh island of Anglesey and from Dublin coastguard base in Ireland were sent to the scene, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of the Llyn peninsula in north Wales.

Two crew members were located and flown to the Anglesey base. Prince William works as an RAF Search and Rescue Force helicopter co-pilot at the base, but it was not immediately clear if he had been involved in the operation.

Helicopters from RAF Chivenor, in southwest England, and the Irish Coastguard are continuing to search for the six missing people, along with boats from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

"Two RNLI lifeboats, along with four search and rescue helicopters and two other commercial boats, are searching for the remaining six crew," the RNLI said in a statement.

Gale-force winds battered the Irish Sea during Sunday and the coastguard said it is believed this could have caused the incident.

Florida A&M band leader fired after member's death

By msnbc.com staff and The Associated Press

The longtime band director at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee was fired on Wednesday?after the suspected hazing death of a drum major.

University?president James Ammons sent band director Julian White a termination letter, citing White's inability to stop the suspected hazing in the band and music department.

"We are serious, this has to stop," Ammons told?the Orlando Sentinel. "The highest priority we have as a university is protecting the health, safety and well-being of our students."

Officials say 26-year-old Robert Champion was found unresponsive on a bus parked outside an Orlando hotel on Saturday night after the school's football team lost to rival Bethune-Cookman. Champion was vomiting and had complained he couldn't breathe before he collapsed.

A telephone message left at White's?home by the Associated Press wasn't immediately returned. White has been placed on paid administrative leave and has 10 days to respond to his firing.

The exact cause and manner of Champion's death are pending the autopsy results, said Sheri Blanton, a forensic coordinator for the medical examiner. There is no timetable for getting the results back, but most cases take 10 to 12 weeks, she said.

FAMU officials acknowledged that 30 students have been kicked off the band this semester due to hazing incidents. There are currently three investigations.

On Tuesday, officials at the Tallahassee school suspended the famed Marching 100 band and any other ensemble that performs under the supervision of the FAMU music department. The move affects more than 400 students.

Nicki Minaj Announces Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded

'Heeeee's baaaacccckkkkk,' MC tweets Tuesday night, revealing that next project is due Valentine's Day.

Let the good news roll in for Young Money! Not only is Drake predicted to top the Billboard albums chart with his latest effort, Take Care, but labelmate Nicki Minaj announced Tuesday night that her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, will drop in stores on Valentine's Day 2012.

After thanking her 7 million-plus followers on Twitter for celebrating Pink Friday's one-year anniversary, the recent American Music Awards winner hyped up her fans for a very special announcement. "Its only right to announce it on the anniversary of Pink Friday right barbz???" she wrote.

While the Young Money raptress planned a Ustream chat session with fans, the MC eventually just tweeted the big news because of technical difficulties. "Pink Friday : ROMAN RELOADED will be released on Valentines Day, 2012. Heeeee's baaaacccckkkkk," she wrote. "Its not called Roman Reloaded. Its called PINK FRIDAY : ROMAN RELOADED!!!!!! 4 WORDS!!!! Love u guys soooo much!!! VALENTINES DAY biittcchh!"

No word on whether the project will be a reissue of her platinum-selling Pink Friday or a brand-new album, but based on Cash Money boss Birdman's talk of an early 2012 release for her sophomore effort, it appears to be the latter. He also dished that Minaj may even release a single before 2011 wraps up.

Roman Zolanski is just one of Minaj's many alter egos, and the news of his appearance on her forthcoming project is no surprise. Back in August, Minaj told MTV News that she wasn't interested in collaborating with anyone for her next project and that the vibe of the LP would revolve around a certain rap persona.

"I don't know, I don't think I'm hitting up anybody for features for this sophomore album," she revealed backstage at Britney Spears' Femme Fatale Tour. "Roman ... possibly. But I never give away all my secrets."

Are you exited to for Nicki's new album? Let us know in the comments!

Sticky goo on Pa. turnpike disables over 100 cars (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? A flood of gooey black muck dropped from a tanker truck disabled about 150 cars and damaged an unknown number of other vehicles along a nearly 40-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, officials said.

A leaking valve on a tanker spread driveway sealant over the eastbound lanes of a long stretch of the Turnpike between New Castle and the Oakmont Service Plaza on Tuesday night, Turnpike spokesman Bill Capone said.

Turnpike operations officials on Wednesday said 150 or more cars were disabled when the sticky goo covered their tires and wheels. Some state police and turnpike maintenance vehicles had to be towed away after getting stuck in the tar-like substance, according to the turnpike operations center.

Traffic was moving normally by Wednesday morning, but the sticky mess hindered the travel plans of some motorists traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Laura Frick told WTAE-TV she was traveling from Cleveland to New Jersey for the holiday.

"Now we have to turn around and go back home," Frick said. "It's horrible."

Retired firefighter Bob King told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review the experience was the most harrowing of his life.

"It caught us off guard," said King, who now lives near Chicago. "It didn't seem like anyone knew what it was or what to do. It had to be an incredible amount of tar. It's still piled on my tires."

Cpl. Mike Corna, with the state police barracks that patrol the pike near Pittsburgh, said Wednesday the driver will be cited for not properly securing his load, though the specific tickets to be issued were still being determined. Police have yet to trace the origin of the load. The tank was filled somewhere in Ohio.

Maintenance crews got out quickly, dumping sand on the pooled goop and using snow plows to push it on to the shoulder, turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo said. The mess was mostly confined to the right lane and the roadway didn't have to be shut down while workers tried to clean it up.

Turnpike officials urged motorists whose cars were damaged to call its operations center at (800) 331-3414. DeFebo said a number of callers have already been in touch with turnpike operations, which is still trying to determine how many motorists were affected.

"Dangerous Method" would have Freud, Jung asleep on the couch (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? There are no "Great Scott! You've discovered penis envy!" moments in David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method," which explores the birth of psychoanalysis, but given the general tedium of the goings-on here, such a scene might have provided sweet relief.

As it is, we're left with a stagy and interminably talky drama about three intelligent people and their endless conversations about the nature of mankind.

The film fits into Cronenberg's interest in the limitations of the body, and how one might expand those boundaries, but that doesn't make this riveting in the slightest.

Michael Fassbender stars as Carl Jung, a young psychiatrist working at a sanitarium and treating the "hysterical" Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a woman who has been deeply damaged by her strict upbringing, which has led her to equate abuse and humiliation with sexual excitement.

The psychosexual elements of Sabina's case become the basis for a lengthy correspondence between Jung and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and these two pioneers of a new specialty hit if off like gangbusters. It quickly becomes apparent, however, that Freud sees Jung as an acolyte while Jung considers his famous counterpart to be a peer.

Sabina begins to improve, eventually deciding to study to become a psychiatrist herself. The unspoken attraction between her and Jung finally bursts forth after Jung treats the hedonistic Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), a psychiatrist himself, who sees no moral dilemma in a therapist sleeping with his patients. Having apparently been waiting for someone, somewhere, to give him the go-ahead, Jung starts giving Sabina spankings.

Freud and Jung travel to America, they have a falling out, Sabina marries someone else, World War I threatens to break out, but none of these incidents add up to much drama. It's like watching a series of vignettes that never accumulate any kind of impact. (Christopher Hampton wrote the somnorific screenplay, based on his play "The Talking Cure.")

But even when Cronenberg is off his game as a storyteller, his movies always look and sound great, thanks to his talented crew of regulars including cinematographer Peter Suschitzky and composer Howard Shore. Fassbender plays a much more buttoned-down role than usual, but makes an effort to bring him to life, and Mortensen provides a gravitas that's equal parts age and experience to Freud. (At times, it's like watching George C. Scott play the role.) Meanwhile, Cassel's patented brand of charismatic shiftiness couldn't fit his all-too-brief role any better.

Knightley, on the other hand, doesn't emerge unscathed. Her Russian accent -- speaking of Freud, I first typed "Russian accident" -- is borderline hilarious, and the more upset the character becomes, the more Knightley "pyours" on the "vyowels."

"A Dangerous Method" reeks of Oscar-bait: acclaimed actors playing historical figures while wearing celluloid collars and carrying parasols around old Europe. But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and a prestige piece is just a well-intentioned bore.

Thanksgiving Safety: 7 Tips to Avoid Food-Poisoning Your Guests (LiveScience.com)

Blunders in the kitchen on Thanksgiving may lead to more than just soggy mashed potatoes or burnt pumpkin pie ? they may make your guests ill.

Here are seven tips to avoid food poisoning this Thanksgiving, and throughout the holiday season:

Wait to add the turkey to your cart

As you make your Thanksgiving grocery store run, don't pick up your frozen turkey until right before you head to checkout, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) says. If you add the turkey to your cart first and then wander the aisles, the turkey may start to thaw. As the meat comes to room temperature, bacteria can grow and multiply, added Roger Clemens, IFT president.

In addition, certain enzymes that degrade the texture of the meat become activated, Clemens said. You should put the bird in the freezer immediately upon arriving home.

Safely thaw the turkey

One to two days before the big meal is the time to place your turkey in the fridge to thaw, says the United States Department of Agriculture. The bird should be placed on a tray to catch juices that may leak out, the USDA notes. That way, you avoid contaminating other foods in the fridge with bacteria from the meat.

You should allow 24 hours of thawing time in the fridge for every four to five pounds of turkey. If you can't wait for the turkey to thaw in the fridge, you can submerge the turkey, still in its original wrapper, in a container of water. You should change the water every 30 minutes, according to the USDA guideline.

Also, never wash your? turkey, said Douglas Powell, a professor of food safety at Kansas State University. Washing raw meat or poultry can spread bacteria around your sink and kitchen. Running water can splash off the turkey and contaminate surfaces up to three feet away, Powell said.

Cook your turkey properly
Make sure the turkey is thawed before you place it in the oven. If you put a frozen turkey in the oven, the inside won't cook properly and the outside will burn, Clemens said.

To ensure harmful bacteria are killed, the turkey should be cooked so that its internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Use a thermometer to check the bird's temperature in the innermost part of the thigh, the wing and thickest part of the breast, the FDA says.

Avoid cross-contamination

Keep foods that will be cooked, including all raw meat, seafood and eggs, away from any food that won't be cooked, such as lettuce and fruit. This rule should be followed in all environments, from the grocery store, to the fridge to your kitchen counter, the FDA says.

Do not place cooked meat or any foods that will be consumed raw on plates that have held raw meat or eggs, the FDA says, without carefully washing the plates first.

Be careful when you stuff your turkey

Never use frozen stuffing and never stuff a frozen turkey. When making your stuffing, mix wet and dry ingredients separately and combine them right before using, the FDA says. Stuff the turkey right before you place it in the oven.

The stuffing should be cooked until it reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit, regardless of whether it is in the turkey or not, the FDA says.

Stuffing the turkey can be messy, Powell said. As you handle the raw bird, you contaminate your hands and risk contaminating everything you touch. Because of this, Powell recommended you have the stuffing and other ingredients and utensils you may need ready to go before you begin. Powell said he places the turkey in a pan so it is in a contained space during the stuffing process. When you're done, wash your hands and all other contaminated containers and utensils thoroughly.

For optimum safety, bake your stuffing in a casserole dish, the FDA says.

Produce can be risky too

People tend to think of raw meat as the biggest food-safety hazard at the dinner table, but produce and other raw products can be just as risky, Powell said. Vegetables such as potatoes and carrots are grown in the ground and can be contaminated with soil bacteria. It's important to wash vegetables and properly discard of their peels, Powell said.

Refrigerate leftovers

Don't let your meat and other food sit out at the table for too long. Food that is left out for more than two hours may become contaminated and should be discarded, Clemens said. Putting leftovers in the fridge promptly will ensure they are safe to eat later. When you re-heat your leftovers, make sure you cook them to the right temperature ? about 140 to 165 degrees ? before consuming.

Ex-Penn St coach's bail could go up if new charges (AP)

HARRISBURG, Pa. ? Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's status as a free man could change if more accusers surface and police file new charges, as his lawyer fears.

Sandusky, now awaiting trial on charges he sexually abused eight boys over 15 years, could then find himself with a high bail he might not be able to pay, criminal defense lawyers said Tuesday.

Sandusky was released after his Nov. 5 arrest on $100,000 unsecured bail, meaning he didn't have to post any collateral to be freed.

His attorney, Joe Amendola, told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Tuesday that he was worried there may soon be new criminal allegations against his client.

"My concern is, if they bring new charges based upon new people coming forward, that bail's going to be set and he's going to wind up in jail," said Amendola, who has not returned multiple phone messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Prosecutors "don't have to start all over," said veteran Lemoyne defense attorney Bill Costopoulos, who's not involved in the case. "The additional counts would result in another arrest, another bail piece, another preliminary hearing date being set."

All four common pleas judges in Centre County, where Penn State is located, removed themselves from potentially presiding over the case and were replaced Tuesday by outside jurists, the Pennsylvania court system announced.

The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts said in a release that the judges bowed out "to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest due to real or perceived connections" to Sandusky, the university or the charity for at-risk children Sandusky founded.

John M. Cleland, a senior judge from McKean County, was appointed to take over the case, though another judge, Kathy A. Morrow, was named to handle matters until Cleland can assume jurisdiction.

Cleland chaired the Interbranch Commission on Juvenile Justice, established in the wake of the "kids-for-cash" courthouse scandal in which Luzerne County judges were accused of sending children to private detention centers for kickbacks.

The court system said neither Cleland nor Morrow, president judge in Perry and Juniata counties, have any known connections to Sandusky, the university or the charity.

Morrow immediately signed an order to prevent people involved in the case from disclosing the name of an individual described by his lawyers as a victim of and witness to child sexual abuse.

The temporary order, issued at the request of two State College attorneys, instructed court officials and the parties to refer to him as "John Doe."

The Centre County clerk's office was told to seal any portion of the record that refers to him by name, and the motion seeking the order was itself sealed. Messages seeking comment from his lawyers weren't immediately returned.

Also Tuesday, Sandusky's preliminary hearing was rescheduled for Dec. 13 at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte. It will be handled by an out-of-county jurist, Westmoreland County Senior District Judge Robert E. Scott.

Scott replaced the district judge who set bail for Sandusky, Leslie Dutchcot of State College, who had ties to The Second Mile, Sandusky's charity. The court order said the change was designed to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

If Scott has to make new decisions about bail, they would come in the context of public outrage over the allegations, which include charges that Sandusky found victims among boys being helped by The Second Mile.

"The more charges, the more serious it becomes, and of course I've heard public outcry that his bail is unsecured and it's too low," said Tunkhannock defense attorney Gerald Grimaud, who isn't involved in the case. "Any new judge or district magistrate is not tone deaf. I'm sure they're reading things in the news media and watching things on TV like everybody else."

Until the preliminary hearing, prosecutors can seek to have bail modified by the district judge, said Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin. After that hearing, bail changes would have to be pursued by a county court petition, he said.

Martin said criminal complaints can also be amended before a preliminary hearing but afterward the defendant would have to be rearrested, and then the prosecution and defense would argue over whether to consolidate the two sets of charges for trial.

An attorney general's office spokesman declined to comment on the Centre County judges' recusal or about potential new charges against Sandusky.

The scandal has resulted in the ouster of Penn State President Graham Spanier and head football coach Joe Paterno and has cast a dark shadow over one of college football's most legendary programs. Athletic Director Tim Curley has been placed on leave, and Vice President Gary Schultz, who oversaw the university's police department, has stepped down.

Schultz and Curley are charged with lying to a grand jury and failing to properly report suspected abuse to authorities. Like Sandusky, they have denied the allegations.

Cosmic Antimatter Excess Confirmed

The most promising wimp is a particle known as the neutralino. This is a hypothesized particle which would exist in either super-symmetrical theories. Super-symmetry says that in an unbroken general theory, every boson - a particle like a photon with an integer spin - has a fermion - 1/2 spin - partner, with the difference being that the fermion has a spin of 1/2. Since we don't seen bosons and fermions of the same energy, if, and it is still if, there was super-symmetry, it is a broken symmetry.

The neutralino would be a composite particle, composed of the super-partners of the guage bosons and the higgs - that is wino (w partner), higgsino (higgs parnter), bino (partner of the weak hypercharge). Since the symmetry is broken, we don't see the original super-partners, only their super-imposed forms with the same mass eigenstate.

When particles annihilate, they produce a set of particles that have a quantum number of 0. Any particles with the same mass-energy as the original colliding pair of particle and anti-particle can be produced. If mass energies are low, this means that the result will be mostly photons, because photons have no mass, and are only energy. That is, they have a low total mass energy. But any particles can be produced, so long as the result totals to 0, and has the same mass energy.

Neutralinos, as you would guess, from the term WIMP, are weakly interacting, and massive. That means that when a neutralino annihilates another, particles with greater mass energy can be produced.

In a 1994 paper Drees et al [aps.org] calculated neutralino decay into gluons. One of the co-authors here Kamionkowski went on to publish more on dark matter and neutralinos. There have been other papers on other possible decay products from neutralino annihilation, because, of course, if annihilation produces unstable particles, or anti-particle pairs, it can keep going until it reaches an end state of stable products. However, not all anti-particle pairs produce annihilate, and if the products are stable, they go bouncing on their merry way.

This means that anti-protons and positrons above the background, and at certain energy levels could be the signature of neutralino dark matter.

Or to roll things back: one of the few ways, other than gravity, we can detect WIMPS is from their annihilations. To determine if, and if so, what, WIMPs are composed of, we have to look at the decay products of those events. The Pamela data shows that there is an excess of positrons, however, it does not show that this excess is from WIMP annihilation. The search for this spectrum is important for both large and small reasons: large because cosmology evolves based on mass, and small because neutralinos, if detected, tell us about the final broken super-symmetrical extensions to the Standard Model, and in turn tell us about the super-partners, and, in turn, about the partners. For example, we have not seen a higgs boson, but a neutralino is an eigenstate of a higgsino fermion, which implies a higgs boson to be partnered with. Back in the 1990's Drees et al published

Glam Slam: Katy Perry's Red Carpet Glam (omg!)

Katy Perry's flawless makeup at the 2011 AMAs -- Getty Images

It's not very often (try never!) that I write a Glam Slam for how to get the look on someone sporting lavender hair! But I thought Katy Perry's hairstyle and makeup at the AMA's was totally adorable, totally Katy.

Here's how you can do it yourself:

PLAY IT NOW: Katy Perry Stuns At ?The Smurfs? NYC Premiere

KATY'S MAKEUP LOOK: WHO: Makeup artist Jake Bailey

INSPIRATION: "I wanted to do a sophisticated twist on the 'classic Katy' look to complement the Vivienne Westwood couture dress. We went extra dramatic with the signature liquid liner and lashes and went for a coral (orangey) red as opposed to a classic red to pick up on some accents in the dress."

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Inside The 2011 American Music Awards

HOW TO: "I perfected her skin by buffing a liquid foundation onto her skin using a large kabuki brush and set it with a dusting of Guerlain's Les Violettes loose powder. I warmed her complexion with a tawny blush from NARS called 'Madly' and swirled a tiny bit of a coral shimmer blush called 'Orgasm'...also from NARS on the apples of her cheeks for a little extra glow.

I elongated her eyes using a liquid liner marker from Le Metier. Then, I applied 2 sets of strip lashes and coated them with 2 coats of COVERGIRL Lash Blast 24HR mascara (available in January!). This is an extra rich formula that lasts forever. I've been using this on all my clients for red carpets lately since I can't always be with them for touch ups. I lined her lower lash line with COVERGIRL Liquiline Blast eyeliner in 'violet voltage' I softened it by blending it out with a small shadow brush.

I used a bright coral red COVERGIRL LipPerfection lipcolor in 'flame.' This was the perfect color to pick up on the dresses coral accents and complemented her pink hair :) I had Katy apply the lipstick directly from the tube and I refined the edges using a small lipstick brush."

VIEW THE PHOTOS: 2011 American Music Awards: Red Carpet Arrivals

KATY'S HAIR WHO: Fekkai Celebrity Stylist Renato Campora

INSPIRATION: "A very sculpted, modern take on a French twist. Renato was inspired for this look after seeing Katy's red carpet dress. The look was elegant and sophisticated but also innovative."

VIEW THE PHOTOS: ?California Gurl? Katy Perry

HOW TO: Renato began by applying Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel to wet hair in order to give it a firm base. He then blow-dried the hair while brushing it through with a flat brush. He used a one-inch curling iron throughout the hair to create body while giving it a sturdy foundation. Renato then heavily teased the hair. To create the final updo, he pushed the front of the hair forward and wrapped the rest into a French twist, securing it with hairpins. To complete the look, Renato added an accessory made by Vivienne Westwood by weaving it into the hair with his fingers. He secured the look by spraying the hair with Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray.

No. 14 Kansas holds off Georgetown 67-63 in Maui

(AP) ? Kansas made its share of mistakes, allowing Georgetown to go on runs that prevented the Jayhawks from pulling away.

When the game was on the line, though, Kansas came through ? a big step for such a young team.

Thomas Robinson had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Travis Releford hit two big free throws and the No. 14 Jayhawks made the big plays down the stretch to hold off pesky Georgetown 67-63 in the first round of the Maui Invitational on Monday night.

"We handled adversity really good and hit some big shots," said Kansas guard Tyshawn Taylor, who fought off leg cramps to score 16. "We kept our composure."

Playing in front of a largely pro-Kansas crowd inside Lahaina Civic Center, the Jayhawks (2-1) found a way to win against a team that wasn't about to back down.

Releford made the biggest plays, getting his hand on a steal that set up a layup by Elijah Johnson, then sinking two free throws with 15 seconds left. Releford ended the game with a heady play, diving for a loose ball after a miss by the Hoyas, then calling timeout to help the Jayhawks move into the semifinals against UCLA on Tuesday.

"Travis made about three great plays for us to ice the win," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "He did a lot of good things late. He needed that individually and we needed that, too."

Kansas' closing stretch helped frustrate Georgetown coach John Thompson III.

The Hoyas (2-0) kept up with the Jayhawks most of the way, hitting one big shot after another each time Kansas went on a run. Georgetown just couldn't stop Robinson from getting to the rim ? he had at least a half-dozen dunks ? and came up just short when Jason Clark's 3-pointer with 5 seconds left was offline.

Clark led Georgetown with 15 points and Hollis Thompson had 14.

"It's frustrating," Thompson III said. "The things that we can control, we should control. We're going to play against a lot of good teams that are going to do things where there's nothing you can do, but there are a few things we can control. We're not going to be singing this young team song all year."

Kansas was picked by the Big 12's coaches as co-favorites to win its eighth consecutive conference title along with Texas A&M, despite losing Marcus and Markieff Morris, Josh Selby and several other key players from last season.

That was a surprise to Self, particularly after his highly regarded recruiting class was trimmed in half to three before the season even started.

Kansas lost forward Braeden Anderson due to the Big 12's policy on partial qualifiers, and questions about the transcripts of shooting guard Ben McLemore and forward Jamari Traylor made them ineligible.

Still, the Jayhawks are talented, led by Robinson and Taylor.

Kansas opened the season as it almost always does, by stomping an overmatched opponent, in this case a 46-point win over Towson State. The young Jayhawks got a quick dose of reality in their second game, though, unable to keep up with No. 2 Kentucky in a 75-65 loss last Tuesday.

Kansas got off to a shaky start offensively against Georgetown, missing eight of its first 12 shots, including a breakaway dunk by Robinson that clanged off the back of the rim.

The Jayhawks settled down after that, though, getting an alley-oop dunk from Justin Wesley and a 3-pointer by Conner Teahen to go up 35-29 late in the first half.

But, as a young team tends to do, Kansas kept following good spurts with bad ones.

The Jayhawks went into a funk after the first-half run, allowing Georgetown to get within two at halftime. Kansas tried to pull away to start the second half and started fumbling balls away as the Hoyas fought back, before the Jayhawks finally pulled out the win with one final spurt.

"I thought we played hard and played smart, for the most part," Self said.

Kansas looks like a veteran team compared to Georgetown.

The Hoyas lost three starters and a pair of role players from a team that won 21 games and lost to Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament. That leaves Georgetown with a roster of 10 underclassmen to go with Thompson, Clark and Henry Sims.

But the Hoyas are resilient, rallying together after a brawl with a Chinese team in Beijing over the summer, and play that hard-to-guard version of the Princeton offense that Thompson installed.

Georgetown needed its resiliency after struggling early.

The Hoyas went nearly four minutes before scoring their first points and missed 11 of their first 15 shots. Georgetown finally started to get a few shots to drop, let Kansas go on a run after that and fought back, getting a pair of late 3-pointers by Thompson and one by Otto Porter at the buzzer to stay within 37-35.

The Hoyas continued to fight back, but couldn't come up with the big plays down the stretch to fall just short after a gutty effort from a young team.

"We have to take care of our business a little better," Thompson III said. "Maybe it is a function of being young, I don't know, but we have to take care of our business better in key parts of the game."

Penguin suspends library e-books, citing security (AP)

NEW YORK ? One of the country's largest publishers, Penguin Group (USA), has suspended making e-editions of new books available to libraries and won't allow libraries to loan any e-books for Amazon.com's Kindle.

"We have always placed a high value on the role that libraries can play in connecting our authors with our readers," the publisher announced in a statement Monday. "However, due to new concerns about the security of our digital editions, we find it necessary to delay the availability of our new titles in the digital format while we resolve these concerns with our business partners."

For non-Kindle users, the policy does not affect e-books already on library catalogs. Penguin's authors include Patricia Cornwell, Ken Follett and Ron Chernow, and new books include Sue Grafton's "V for Vengeance" and Rep. Michele Bachmann's "Core of Conviction."

The publisher did not cite any specific titles in its release and did not immediately respond to requests from The Associated Press to clarify its security concerns. Among publishers, "security" has traditionally referred to piracy, but this time it likely means Amazon.com's Kindle lending programs.

The online retailer is allowing its special Prime members to rent one book a month from a selection of titles provided by it. Penguin and other publishers declined to participate but discovered their books were still being included, a policy denounced as illegal by the Authors Guild, which represents published writers.

Meanwhile, Amazon has formed a partnership with the country's top library e-book supplier, OverDrive Inc., that vastly increases the Kindle's presence in libraries and encourages patrons to visit Amazon's website and buy books.

OverDrive posted a statement on its website that it had been asked by Penguin to "disable the `Get for Kindle' functionality for all Penguin e-books."

Besides being worried about Amazon's power in the digital market, publishers have long been concerned that allowing library patrons to download e-books might harm sales. Simon & Schuster and Macmillan don't make any e-books available to libraries, and HarperCollins has restricted their usage, a policy that angered libraries when announced last year.

OverDrive CEO Steve Potash said Monday that his company and Penguin were "in the process of looking at new terms" for libraries but declined to say what the terms were.

While borrowing e-books from libraries has become more difficult, buying books ? Penguin's included ? through libraries is becoming easier. Starting Monday, patrons using the New York Public Library's website who wish to purchase a title can click a Buy it Now tab that links to participating sellers. The library receives a portion of the proceeds, and Potash said he expects the program will soon expand nationwide and into Canada and the United Kingdom.

Sellers involved so far are Barnes & Noble; BooksOnBoard, an independent e-store; and Amazon.

Um.... Can I has a character? I can submit everything but a character picture now.

I must admit, I'm rather mad...but aren't we all? Insanity is one of life's greatest joys, eh?

@Poetic: I sent my pictures for Rei and Statix over with the roleplay document, but I have to be really careful about deleting everything. I don't know if I can make Rei until I get internet back under my name. If worse comes to worse, I could always start him in an email to myself and save it.. I can't wait to see Nikolas, though! This is too awesome!

@Luv: Yeah! I'll reserve you. ^^

Cyrus' new profile might take me a while but it'll be worth it I promise! Or I could just use his old one I made whilst I was a noob.

I hope to finish it today but it's already 7pm and college is tomorrow. D: Show Season starts next week so i'll be really busy! But I do hope to get it done soon, it's not like I need to think too hard. :D

~EDIT~ Aw come on Specs, our sheet is way longer than the New Kids. XD Damn you to heck.

I'm so excited to see Cyrus's new profile, Tabby! You don't even know! >3 And freak, I can't wait to see what you come up with for a character! Ahhh, this is all too cool. Finally getting this thing up after forever! I flagged Timeless as complete, too. Hall of Fame away~! I know what I can do! I can just write down the character sheet on a piece of paper and do everything on my laptop. I have a flashdrive now (got it two days ago!), so I can just transfer everything over when I'm done! :D Hooray for thinking!

I'm sure you'll all love emotionallycompromised!Nikolas.... Of course, my new character will have to be just as awesome... Though, knowing me, I'll probably end up being lazy and not posting him up until later :P But yeah.... ^^

Oh, oh, wait! Attention everybody! I added two new things to each character sheet. Under Gender, I added: "Sexuality" and under that, before Powers, I added: "Love Interest"

Please add these to your character sheets! Sorry for the suddenness. I forgot to add them earlier. Man, the Originals' sheets are really long, though. xD I love long sheets!

@Poetic: I just know I will! ^^

There, so we have a female character. We can't really just have Katie. ^^;; I hope someone agrees to it. Anyway, yes, poetic! Go right ahead! Put him up! I'm getting off now to work on Rei's profile, but I'll be getting on and off for a while 'till my dad's girlfriend gets home, so I'll accept him when he's up. ^^

I love love him poetic! He's so great this time around! And the new pictures are a nice touch. He's such an awesome little manic-depressive, ain't he? ^^; No, I'm joking. He has every right to be depressive. Oh, please excuse me for this, though. You've done this so many times and I'm going to be a grammar nazi! I have no right to be The word you've been spelling so many times, "loose" means something coming undone, or becoming less tight. Like loosening a shoe-lace to take off your shoe. You mean, "lose." Like I'd hate to lose my shoes. I'm so sorry for correcting you and sounding like a pompous stuck-up! I'm just doing it because I've seen you do it before and I didn't want you to do it in school or something and get marked off for spelling incorrections.

I'm just gonna go crawl back to my hole now.. And work of Reivy and Statix! Dx

Love it Poetic! I am still working on Cyrus'. ^^ You guys forget that I gotta incorporate Ghost's personality and things to the sheet too. Damn myself (and Cyrus) for making two characters. Ghost became really important, though at the start it was just Cyrus' mind playing tricks on him and no one believed him. XD Man Cyrus is a lot more complex than I realized. I could never explain how his mind works, never ever.

Nikolas certainly has changed, I sort of like the new him. It's a really good change for him in the sense that his PTSD make perfect sense. His personality change does too. Good work Poetic!

Get Out Alive. I actually found a good theme for the RP whilst listening to my Ipod, although it might have made more sense on the original. D: Still, it works... sort of.

Luv! Rai made me laugh! You'll see why when I get done with my character--Rei. xD They're so much alike. And the fact that their names are close to each other... Yes, I can tell Rei is not going to like Rai very much at all. xD They're different in a few good ways, though. So there's no worries. But still. I just thought it was funny. Rai's awesome!

@Twili: I'm glad you like it so much! It was a lot of fun. Aside from a few complications, we're all glad to of finished it~!
