French police stand guard near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on March 30, 2013. The Eiffel Tower was evacuated after an anonymous phone call announced an attack, said a police source. The perimeter of the monument was secured and about 1,400 people were evacuated shortly before 9 p.m.

By Nancy Ing and Becky Bratu, NBC News

French police say the Eiffel Tower has been completely evacuated after an anonymous individual called in a bomb threat Saturday.

The call received at 7 p.m. local time warned of a possible attack at 9:30 p.m. local time.

Investigators used sniffer dogs to search the Eiffel Tower for any suspicious devices.

About 1,400 tourists and staffers were evacuated from the tower. French police have received similar calls in the past and have always evacuated the famous tourist attraction as a precaution. The tower was evacuated at least once last year and twice in 2011, according to The Associated Press.

News website Le Parisien reported that police said the threat was called in from a telephone booth in a Paris suburb.

Tottenham beats Swansea 2-1 in Premier League

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:02 p.m. ET March 30, 2013

SWANSEA, Wales (AP) -Gareth Bale scored another stunning goal Saturday to give Tottenham a 2-1 win over Swansea that lifted it above Chelsea into third place in the Premier League.

Bale set up Jan Vertonghen for the first goal in the seventh minute and then curled home a brilliant effort in the 21st to double the lead.

Michu pulled Swansea back into the game with his 20th goal of the season in the 71st, but Tottenham held out over a frantic final 20 minutes to bounce back from consecutive losses against Liverpool and Fulham.

With Chelsea losing 2-1 to Southampton, Tottenham is now two points ahead of the London club in third place, but with a game more played.

Newcastle is still uncomfortably close to the relegation zone, sitting just three points out.

Self Improvement | by Christine Maddox. | The Self Improvement Blog

PastBy Christine Maddox -

The past can help us make our future or it can hold us back from it. It can make us fear or make us bold. For most of us, however, it is overcoming our past that will lead to a brighter future. Unfortunately we were not raised by perfect people. Our parents were and are flawed human beings with their own baggage from the past. These generation issues have a tendency to stay in families for years and years and get passed down almost unconsciously. A short temper, physical abuse, lying, and more all end up becoming a daily part of our lives growing up. The bad thing is that most children never realize that their normal family lives are not normal at all. Things like being hit for trivial reasons or yelled at or just treated with indifference throughout childhood is not a healthy way to live, and yet many of us have grown up in those atmospheres and seem to expect the same thing from the rest of the world. Even though this is abuse in many ways, we are comfortable with it and thus chose to hang around and form relationships with people that are comfortable with it, mostly to our detriment.

The thing is that we need to let go of our past and redefine what normal and healthy is. We all have ways that we could live healthier lives. Maybe we see food as a reward and thus overeat; maybe we have bad self-images and feel ugly no matter what we do; or maybe we have short tempers and fly off the handle and expect others to be okay with it. Change is not easy but it is worth doing when you gain a new peace and hope in your future.

One of the major things that hold many people back from changing is the fact that you have to admit that you were wrong. That what you grew up in or used to do yourself was not healthy or normal. This can be a hard thing to deal with as no one likes to be wrong. It also implies that you have wasted your time or your life. This is not true. No matter how old you are you still have time to change and you owe it to yourself and those you love to make your life better.

I love a verse from the Bible that says, ?I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten?? Joel 2:25a (NIV). I see those lost years spent in distress, anger or depression as years eaten by locusts. They are gone and behind us, and yet things can still be restored better than ever. Instead of focusing on what you have lost, look at what you have to gain. Living a healthy and balanced life is well worth the effort of confronting your past.

In my own life I have only begun the process of understanding what healthy living is like. My family has a long history of enabling and fostering helpless people who abuse those around them. There are two types of people, the givers and the takers. The givers are empty and hopeless because the takers take everything they have. The takers are resentful and abusive because they get everything without working for it and feel frustrated and useless.? This is a vicious cycle that has repeated itself generation after generation. Typically it is the women who are the givers and the men who are the takers.

Needless to say this does not foster healthy living conditions. As a child in this type of home I was raised to think in skewed ways. The men were helpless and had to be coddled and never expected to help out in any way beyond being employed, and sometimes not even then. The women were expected to be strong and productive and always loving no matter what the men did. They were supposed to work and take care of the children and the home with no outside help. In fact, from what I was exposed to I always wondered what the point of getting married was. It seemed much easier to just have kids and then get divorced. At least then you would get some money through child support and you wouldn?t have to deal with another big baby to take care of.

As I have gotten older I started to understand that this is not the way families or relationships that are healthy should work. Both parties should give and take equally and there should not be this cycle of sacrifice and greed. Letting go of my family?s idea of relationships actually made me want to find a partner of my own instead of staying single forever. Before I understood what a healthy relationship was I had decided to remain single and spare myself the pain. Now I understand what a blessing an equal partner can be.

Beyond just relational issues we also had issues with respect. Of course you can see where that comes in. How can you respect someone you are taking care of all the time, and how can someone be respected if they never set boundaries or limits? Learning to set proper boundaries without getting upset or frustrated is a process, but it is well worth doing. Having respect for yourself as well as others is very important in living a healthy and balanced life.

As you can see, I am still learning and growing. Overcoming your past is not a one-time thing. It takes a lot of effort and growth to move past what you have been exposed to and into a healthier future. But moving past the past is the only way to find a brighter future.

Ambitious drainage project at Bromsgrove Rugby Club | Pitchcare ...

Bromsgrove MudThe success of any sports facility is, fundamentally, due to the actions of a number of people within the club, who have the personality, drive and ambition to make it successful, both on and off the pitch. In many cases, it is former players who tend to contribute the most.

Having enjoyed their playing career at 'their' beloved club, they want to give something back, either in the capacity of coaching, running the bar, club secretary, or match secretary, whilst often progressing to become the club's chairman/president. It is these people who, importantly, recognise the value their club and its facilities can bring to the community.

The successful clubs are the ones who have developed a good team of people. For example, many would not survive without the support of their junior and youth sections who, as well as providing the next generation of players, also generate much needed income.

It is important that clubs invest in both the clubhouse and pitch facilities. It is often the case that clubs invest in the 'social' aspect, whilst paying only the bare minimum of attention to their pitches. Over time they become poor surfaces to play on and, during inclement weather, are not fit for play.

Bromsgrove GrowingInMany of these past players, and other non-playing members who take up the challenge of helping their club will, quite often, bring many different skills to the table; solicitors, teachers, businessmen, farmers, tradesmen.

One such club that has tapped into these skills and areas of expertise is Bromsgrove Rugby Club, an ambitious Midlands based set-up that has been steadily rising up the leagues under the stewardship of their club coach and former player, Ross Baxter who, with a number of other like-minded members, has been instrumental in turning the fortunes of the club around.

Ross's day time job is working for the RFU in the capacity of Funding and Facilities Manager for the Midlands, one of several who help rugby clubs across the country gain access to possible funding to improve their facilities.

Over the years, he has assisted numerous clubs to gain funding for floodlights, improved drainage schemes, new pitches and clubhouse builds and renovations.

Bromsgrove RFC is a not-for-profit organisation that has four sports pitches, which are used regularly by a wide variety of groups throughout the year, but with the majority of use being throughout the winter. This high demand and high volume of use, combined with poor weather and lower light levels, often results in extensive damage and a steady deterioration of the surface.

In recent seasons, the quality of the first and second team pitches at Bromsgrove had suffered that exact scenario, with water not able to drain away efficiently after rain, leaving the surfaces wet, heavy and not conducive to running rugby.

The club are currently mid table in National 2 North League and play against the likes of Preston, Caldy, Birmingham and Stourbridge. To keep apace with these clubs, Ross recognised the importance of good training and playing facilities, which would not only attract new players but allows the club coaches to get the best out of their existing crop of talent.

Ross, along with the club's chairman, John Blackhall, himself an ex-player and also a Chartered Civil Engineer , spent a number of years evaluating the needs of the club in terms of improving pitch quality, and then looking at ways to obtain funding for an ambitious drainage installation project.

Bromsgrove Toby&JohnBetween them, they managed to source funding from Sport England, Queen Elizabeth II Sports Field Challenge and The Veolia Environmental Trust (who awarded a grant of ?30,000 through the Landfill Communities Fund), that netted over ?100,000 and, along with the club's own fundraising efforts, had raised enough to begin work on the project in October 2012. A local sportsturf contractor, Phil Day Sports (PDS) from Worcester, won the tender to carry out the work.

I caught up with the John Blackhall and PDS Technical Manager, Toby Grace, himself a keen rugby player with Pershore RFC, to see how they were progressing.

Toby is vastly experienced, having a Mechanical Engineering degree, an NVQ Level 3 in Construction Site Supervision, a CITB in Construction Site Manager Safety and four years management experience in Construction and Civil Engineering. Coupled with John's engineering skills, they form a formidable partnership. Indeed, it was John who provided the drainage plans for the project through his company Complete Design Partnership.

Bromsgrove SheltonsToby Grace details the project:

"The remit was to install primary and secondary drainage systems to two full size rugby pitches. The system being consists of perforated land drainage pipes, backfilled with approved gravel and rootzone to the surface, at 5 metre centres; these connect into the main drain. All pipes were installed using a grade laser.

The training pitch has also been gravel slit at 1 metre centres (90? to the laterals), followed by sand topdressing, vertidraining, overseeding and fertilisation.

The timescale for the work began in July of last year on the training pitch - phase 1 - installing main drains, laterals, sand/gravel slits, sand topdressing and seeding.

Once completed, we moved on to phase 2, installing laterals, sand/gravel slits, sand topdressing and seeding of the 1st XV pitch. Phase 3 will be undertaken in May and consist of sand bands/grooves to both pitches.

Bromsgrove AFT Dakota2The methods we used were as follows; firstly, the 150mm diameter perforated main drain was installed at a depth of 750mm, and connected to an existing outfall. The trench was cut using our Shelton Chain Trencher controlled by a grade laser; risings were transferred to tipper trailers via a conveyor. The risings were tipped and stockpiled on site, (this helped keep the cost of the project down).

The main drain was backfilled using an AFT Dual Use Hopper, with 4-10mm single size gravel, a blinding layer of 2-6mm Croxden single size gravel, and topped with Rootzone Design (all supplied by Tarmac Topsport).

Bromsgrove DrainageThe next part of the project was the installation of 980 metres of 85mm diameter perforated lateral drains, at a depth of 550mm. This time, the trenches were cut using a AFT 75 Whizz Wheel controlled by a grade laser. The risings were again taken away by trailer and stockpiled on site. The drains were, again, backfilled with 2-6mm Croxden single size gravel, and topped with Rootzone Design, with an AFT Dual Use Hopper fed via conveyor using our Dakota Turf Tender 420.

After an informative meeting with Mike Harbridge of Professional Sportsturf Design (NW) Ltd, it was agreed to solely use 2-6mm gravel, and omit the 4-10mm gravel as it was felt, with last summer's torrid weather conditions, that three passes of one trench to backfill would eat up too much precious time - a rainstorm was never very far away!

Bromsgrove Drainage2Installing 7,524 metres of gravel bands was the next step. The trenches were again cut using the AFT 75 Whizz Wheel, and backfilled in the same manner as the lateral drains, with 2-6mm gravel and Rootzone Design.

The pitch was then topdressed with sixty tonnes of Tarmac Topsport medium/fine sand, using the Dakota Turf Tender 420. Deep aeration (verti-draining) was the next operation, carried out with the Wiedenmann XD8 Terraspike, followed by dragmatting. 12 x 25kg bags of Everris NPK 8:12:8 Pre Seeder fertiliser were applied using a tractor mounted spreader. Overseeding of the pitch was carried out with a Vredo Disc Seeder, in multiple passes, to accurately apply 12 x 20kg bags of Johnsons J Premier Pitch seed at 35gms/m?."

Bromsgrove GrowthOnce all the drainage work is complete, John is well aware that the club will need to invest in better maintenance of the pitches, by increasing the frequency of mowing, establishing good feeding and aeration programmes as well as robust end of season renovations.

Currently, the club employ a local contractor to cut and mark out the pitches. The club are considering undertaking the work themselves in the future, by investing in equipment and employing a full time groundsman.

Without doubt, this investment in pitch drainage should enable the club to offer even better playing surfaces, but that investment does need to be backed up by sound ongoing maintenance practices, otherwise all the good intentions could be undone in just a couple of seasons.

Pitches are the lifeblood of any club; without them, they have nothing.

Bromsgrove Under7sBromsgrove is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the Midlands, with their first 'real game' played against Kidderminster on the Bromsgrove Recreation Ground, in front of a large crowd, on the 22nd November 1873.

Games were originally played at the 'Rec' but, in 1889, the club moved to a pitch on the Kidderminster Road. From 1893 until 1914, they played either there or the cricket ground in New Road, the arrangement varying from season to season. From 1919 until 1939, the club rented a ground of its own adjoining the county cricket ground, returning there on re-forming in 1946 after World War II.

In 1955, the club, at last, moved to its present ground at Finstall Park, albeit with only one pitch. Since then, the club has extended to enjoy four pitches, a training area and a much extended clubhouse. More recently, and in order to guarantee the future, the club has gained registration as a Friendly Society.

Whilst Bromsgrove RFC has never achieved national honours, it has provided rugby for thousands of players over the years and continues to do so, fielding five teams each Saturday, plus the Crusaders veterans team, Colts, Under 17s and Mini and Junior teams (from the ages of 8 to 16) on Sundays.

The club has enjoyed success in the North Midlands Cup, (winners 1982, semi finalists 1998), The Worcester Floodlit Cup (winners 1998, Runners up 1999) and the 2nd Team Cup organised by Kidderminster RFC.

Over the years, players from Bromsgrove have represented England Colts (the most recent being David Hunt in 1999), England under 21s, and the North Midlands and Worcestershire & Herefordshire County representative squads.

Gabon jails activist for defaming ally of president

LIBREVILLE (Reuters) - A prominent environmental activist was sentenced to six months in prison for defamation in Gabon, his lawyer said on Friday, after he accused an ally of the president of secretly owning the local unit of commodities giant Olam International.

Marc Ona Essangui said during a television broadcast that President Ali Bongo's chief of staff, Liban Souleymane, controlled Olam Gabon, which is developing timber, palm oil and rubber projects in the tiny Central African nation.

Souleymane denied the allegation and brought a defamation case against him, which we won in a Libreville court.

"I regret this decision against my client, who was only fulfilling his role of a counterweight (to the government). I will consult with my client and possibly appeal this decision," Ona Essangui's lawyer Ruphin Nkoulou said.

The court also ordered Ona Essangui to pay a fine of 5 million CFA francs ($9,800). The state prosecutor had requested a one-year jail sentence.

During his first appearance in court on March 9, the wheelchair-bound activist said he did not regret making the accusation. "If I had it to do over again, I'd do the same thing," he said at the time.

Olam began operating in Gabon in 1999, establishing a logging operation. It later entered into a joint venture with the Gabonese state to develop plantations and palm oil mills with planned investments of around $236 million.

Gabonese environmental groups have for the past three years requested publication of the joint venture agreement without success.

Ona Essangui was jailed briefly in 2008 after calling for more transparency in the country's public management. ($1 = 510.8300 CFA francs)

Striking Guantanamo prisoners say water denied

MIAMI (AP) ? Prisoners taking part in an expanding hunger strike at Guantanamo Bay leveled new complaints about their military jailers Wednesday as a team from the International Committee of the Red Cross made a fact-finding trip to the U.S. base in Cuba.

In an emergency motion filed with a federal court in Washington, lawyers say guards have refused to provide drinking water to hunger strikers and kept camp temperature "extremely frigid," to thwart the protest. A spokesman for the detention center denied the allegations.

"The reality is that these men are slowly withering away and we as a country need to take immediate action," said Mari Newman, a human rights lawyer based in Denver, who was among those who submitted the motion.

They filed the petition after interviewing Yemeni prisoner Musaab al-Madhwani by phone Monday. He told them that guards were refusing to provide bottled water and telling prisoners to drink from tap water that inmates believe is non-potable. The lawyers say in their motion that the lack of drinkable water has "already caused some prisoners kidney, urinary and stomach problems," in addition to the health effects of the hunger strike.

Along with their motion, they submitted an affidavit from Dr. Stephen Xenakis, a psychiatrist and retired general, who believes that the hunger strike and lack of adequate drinking water "sets them up for gastrointestinal infections and a quick demise." The doctor also said the 34-year-old al-Madhwani suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder linked to his torture while in U.S. custody in Afghanistan and could be worsened by harsh conditions at Guantanamo.

The U.S. government has not filed a response to the motion. Navy Capt. Robert Durand, a spokesman for the prison, said prisoners are provided with bottled water and that the tap water is safe to drink.

"It's potable water. It's the same water I make my coffee with and that they make lunch with," Durand said. He also denied that there had been any change to the air conditioning settings inside the prison camps.

Accounts of the hunger strike have been in sharp conflict for weeks. Lawyers who have visited or interviewed their clients say a majority of the 166 men held at Guantanamo have joined the protest and some have lost significant weight and are at serious risk.

The military said that as of Wednesday, there were 31 men on hunger strike, up from 28 on Monday. Three men were at the hospital being treated for dehydration and 11 were being force-fed with a liquid nutrient mix to prevent dangerous weight loss.

A two-person delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross that includes a doctor is at the base to assess the situation. They started a week earlier than planned because of the hunger strike, said spokesman Simon Schorno. Their findings will be presented to the camp commander and Miami-based Southern Command, which oversees the prison, but will not be made public.

Lawyers for the prisoners say the hunger strike began on Feb. 6 as a protest of the men's indefinite confinement without charge and because of what they said was a return to harsh treatment from past years, including more intrusive searches and confiscation of personal items such as mail from their families. The military says no policies or procedures have changed at Guantanamo and the strike is an attempt to draw attention to their cause.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest say Obama's team is closely monitoring the hunger strikes, but deferred to the Pentagon for any specifics.

"The administration remains committed to closing the detention facility at Guantanamo bay," Earnest said, noting that legislation passed by Congress makes it likely that process won't be quick.

Review: G.I. Joe: Retaliation - Film Reviewer - Chronicle Live

Following up 2009's hit G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, the Joes are back in this bigger-budget sequel

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

****

The original G.I. Joe film opened at the peak of the 2009 summer blockbuster season to largely negative reviews.

The all-guns-blazing romp based on the popular line of military action figures stormed past 300 million dollars in worldwide box office takings.

Money talks louder than a flimsy script, so director Jon M Chu (Step Up 3D) locks and loads for this bigger-budget sequel, which raises the action ante with eye-popping set pieces and bruising showdowns.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is slicker and more entertaining than its predecessor, although the bar wasn?t set particularly high.

Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick sensibly kill off swathes of their cast in the explosive opening sequence in order to focus attention on a handful of undernourished characters.

Once the dust settles, we learn that arch-villain Cobra Commander (Luke Bracey) is in stasis in a subterranean prison and his henchman Zartan (Arnold Vosloo) is installed in the White House, impersonating the President of the United States (Jonathan Pryce).

Zartan frames the G.I. Joes as traitors to the American cause and wipes out most of the brave men and women in order to clear the way for the rise of the Cobra terrorist network.

Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), Flint (DJ Cotrona) and Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki) survive the bloodbath and quickly realise that the order to terminate must have come from the upper echelons of power.

``There?s only one man who could authorise an attack like that,? growls Roadblock, ``and I voted for him.?

So the Joes march back to American soil and seek help from legendary retired operative General Joseph Colton (Bruce Willis).

Meanwhile, evil agent Firefly (Ray Stevenson) masterminds Cobra Commander?s escape and mute swordsman Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and ninja Jinx (Elodie Yung) travel to the Himalayas to capture heinous henchman Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun).

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is preoccupied with spectacle over substance but does deliver a few pulse-racing thrills and spills that make good use of the 3D.

The cliff-hanging Himalayas sword fight incorporates vertiginous shots of bodies tumbling to terra firma, and when Firefly unleashes a swarm of tiny mechanised insects, they buzz about the screen, apparently close enough to swat.

Johnson, Channing Tatum, Willis and co flex their pecs, discharge hundreds of bullets and perform gravity-defying leaps in the name of world peace, but they still can?t save London from being reduced to rubble by a nuclear detonation.

That?s the price we pay for turning our noses up to the first film.

Robot ants successfully mimic real colony behavior

Friday, March 29, 2013

Scientists have successfully replicated the behaviour of a colony of ants on the move with the use of miniature robots, as reported in the journal PLOS Computational Biology. The researchers, based at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark, USA) and at the Research Centre on Animal Cognition (Toulouse, France), aimed to discover how individual ants, when part of a moving colony, orient themselves in the labyrinthine pathways that stretch from their nest to various food sources.

The study focused mainly on how Argentine ants behave and coordinate themselves in both symmetrical and asymmetrical pathways. In nature, ants do this by leaving chemical pheromone trails. This was reproduced by a swarm of sugar cube size robots, called "Alices", leaving light trails that they can detect with two light sensors mimicking the role of the ants' antennae.

In the beginning of the experiment, where branches of the maze had no light trail, the robots adopted an "exploratory behaviour" modelled on the regular insect movement pattern of moving randomly but in the same general direction. This led the robots to choose the path that deviated least from their trajectory at each bifurcation of the network. If the robots detected a light trail, they would turn to follow that path.

One outcome of the robotic model was the discovery that the robots did not need to be programmed to identify and compute the geometry of the network bifurcations. They managed to navigate the maze using only the pheromone light trail and the programmed directional random walk, which directed them to the more direct route between their starting area and a target area on the periphery of the maze. Individual Argentine ants have poor eyesight and move too quickly to make a calculated decision about their direction. Therefore the fact that the robots managed to orient themselves in the maze in a similar fashion than the one observed in real ants suggests that a complex cognitive process is not necessary for colonies of ants to navigate efficiently in their complex network of foraging trails.

"This research suggests that efficient navigation and foraging can be achieved with minimal cognitive abilities in ants," says lead author Simon Garnier. "It also shows that the geometry of transport networks plays a critical role in the flow of information and material in ant as well as in human societies."

A mesmerizing, realistic and often hilarious look at the politics of power and the power of ideas ...

A political drama, a personal drama, a sharp-eyed study of how the media manipulate us from all sides, No reels and ricochets with emotional force.

It's a funny look at the way the media warp public opinion, and a curiously hopeful one.

On every level, "No" leaves one with bittersweet feelings about democracy, love and the cost of compromise.

If you can shake off the inherent grossness of mining the Pinochet years for yet another Mad Man-style deification of zeitgeist-grasping salesmen, this is moderately interesting stuff.

"No" is filmmaking of the first order.

Old technology plus the packaging of a revolution add up to a Yes

Freshens up a decades-old story with vibrant humor and a good sense of storytelling.

No continually impresses for its slyness and savvy -- rarely has such an eyesore been so worth watching.

Larrain fashions an unlikely crowd-pleaser from a historical episode that has its share of tragedy as well as triumph.

Stirring as a celebration of voter empowerment, No may also inspire pangs of wistful nostalgia.

Fascinating work from director Pablo Larrain and screenwriter Pedro Peirano, who manage to slip into the skin of a beleaguered country and detail the urgency of a revolution, sold one jingle at a time.

Swims upstream against high-definition with a defiantly lo-fi approach that's also ingeniously evocative of the historical period.

Wildly colorful strokes, full of bitter humor.

It's a fascinating and surprisingly fun look behind the scenes of politics and media.

An Oscar-nominated win for more than just political junkies.

Famous Taiwan news animator taken off market, away from China

A deal fell through this week to sell Taiwan's Next Media, known for spoofs on everyone from the British royals to Sarah Palin. Many Taiwanese worried that its sale could have given it a pro-China bias.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart?highlighted the animation studio?s spoof on the royal wedding in 2012, and the group's poke at Tiger Woods, imitations of Al Gore, and a jab at Silvio Berlusconi?s sex scandals in Italy all went viral on the Internet.

But then in November, the media group known so well for depicting famous controversies around the world suddenly found itself at the center of its own kerfuffle at home when it announced it was for sale to a conservative business group with China connections. The news set off a chain of street demonstrations in Taiwan, drawing thousands. ?

In Taiwan, the media tends to be heavily polarized, either bashing China or avoiding criticism of it. Independent empires such as Next Media are rare. So activists feared that the prospective buyers would take that gem away by revamping Next Media to please China and compromise its irreverent independence.

But on Wednesday, Next Media announced that the buyers had bailed. As the consortium of four buyers missed a deadline to complete the deal worked out in November, the media group sought to reassert the independent spirit that made it popular before the concern about Chinese control started looming.

It said that except for television, which has lost more than $200 million since 2003, the group is no longer for sale.

?People?s concerns are fair and with evidence,? says Leonard Chu, a retired media studies professor at National Chengchi University in Taipei, referring to protesters and skeptical academics. ?We know that China is not an open society, so that?s a reason to worry.?

Of Taiwan?s six major daily papers and six mainstream cable TV channels, only three regularly raise doubts about Taiwan?s engagement with China.

The Want Want Group, a main contender to buy Next Media, controls several Taiwanese media outlets seen as warm toward Beijing, and raised fears that the politically neutral Next Media coverage would be slanted toward Beijing. But before the $586 million takeover could be finalized, a Next Media spokesman said infighting between investors crashed the deal.

?The buyers decided they don?t want to go forward,? says Next Media?s commercial director Mark Simon, who added that Next Media changed its mind about selling. ?The company is not for sale anymore.?

Next Media?s animated graphics, which use lifelike cartoon videos of politicians and celebrities to recreate news events, have earned the company a cult following online. Next Media?s Internet following has reached about 15 million in Taiwan and Hong Kong combined.

?Why go out and put your employees and put everybody through hell?? Simon says of the decision to take the company off the market. ?TV is on the way out, and we?ll sell TV, but everything else here makes money. It?s a very profitable company.??

Because of pressure from the public, Taiwan?s?broadcast authorities and the legislature are studying whether they can?change laws to prevent media monopolies.

?The public opinions toward the purchase did play a role in keeping the government on their toes, so they can?t just not be transparent and let a deal go through,? says?Ketty Chen,?a political scientist and visiting instructor at National Taiwan University in Taipei.

China has claimed self-ruled Taiwan since the Chinese civil war of the 1940s?and demands that the two sides eventually reunify. Beijing has not ruled out the use of force, keeping the island on guard, despite a thaw in relations since 2008.
