Google Play Galaxy Nexus Accessories

Good news, everyone! The elusive Samsung Galaxy Neuxs accessories are now available directly from Google in the Google Play Store. (Where they should be!) Yeah, it's only been about six months or so since the phone was released, but we're not going to look this gift horse in the mouth.

Available are the Vehicle Dock -- that's the proper one with the pogo pins to keep you charged and not the janky "navigation" dock that only holds the phone -- and a pair of desktop docks. If a traditional landscape dock is your bag, it's there, with the same pogo pins for charging. Or if you need some high-def output, there's an HDMI dock in portrait orientation that uses the USB port for output and charging.

The vehicle and landscape desktop dock each cost $54, and the HDMI portrait desktop dock is $49. You can snag 'em all at the link below.

Green Business Innovation : Offices can now print on a E-paper and ...

Architects typically work with large-format drawings on 24 by 36-inch or larger paper. Most architectural firms have their own large-format printers or plotters to print and copy computer-generated drawings. Architects and construction houses waste a lot of paper. Even when they design a LEED building. Because the way most of them work is not sustainable at all, this I covered in my earlier article, Green Buildings ? How most of them are really made, the inside story.

The reason for this is simple. The corporates which run these architectural houses are mostly developers who have become so callused by the ?system? which runs India, that they have lost the perspective of good and bad. For most of them Sustainability is another ?task? and ?Green norms? are an impediment which they need to give a lip service too. Thus one would see, even for a small correction or revision, entire design sheets are printed, minimum 3 prints of size A -Zero.

Since trees come in all different sizes, it is difficult to estimate how much paper comes from one tree, however according to one paper manufacturer, a cord of wood measuring 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet produces nearly 90,000 sheets paper. Taking the last census report, India?s total population was around 1,20,00,00,000. If every Indian save one sheet of paper a day approximately 15,000 Trees can be saved. If 15,000 Trees can be saved just by not wasting one sheet of paper a day, imagine of how many trees can be saved if we become more? prudent in our approach.

Let us consider some interesting facts which I have gathered from various sources -

1. Consider this: according to the state government of Australia, over 600,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard are sent to landfill in NSW every year. Australians as a whole use 210,000 tonnes of office paper each year ? and much of this is not from recycled sources but from virgin forests.

2. In the USA The average student uses about 11 sheets of paper per day. The school year goes on average 180 days so this would equal to 23,760 sheets for 12 years.

3. A Seattle based study found that businesses typically throw away about half of all documents within 24 hours of printing. In fact, about 170 tons of paper is sent to Seattle?s landfills each day from Seattle businesses.

For every dollar spent on printing documents, companies typically incur $6 in handling and distribution costs, according to a Xerox study.

Over the course of a year Seattle paper waste contributes about 9,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the same as the emissions from consuming 972,000 gallons of gasoline.?

This is a study by Xerox of one American city, in India and rest of the developing world we do not have such studies done or reports published. Simply because we do not think this as a problem which needs urgent and immediate attention.

But such problems can not be defined locally any more. The devastation in Japan? a year back has come to haunt the American West coast in form of? Billion ton of debris. Similarly the decimation of rain forests for pulp & paper industry would lead to unprecedented challenges more severe than what we have experienced till date and it would not be their locally. This is known to all, yet we fail to arrest easily achievable targets, such as reduction on dependence on Paper. We all know by now that it is somewhere between difficult and impossible to have a paperless office/school . But how much paper do we consume unnecessarily? It is no more possible to contain the problem by raising ones personal bar as to when one needs a paper copy of something from the computer. Strong legislation are required which would make it near mandatory that unless you?re printing something super important,(which can be defined and refined on a weekly/monthly basis by each corporation) one must? save ink and paper by tracking changes in electronic documents.

To make this legislation work, one must however understand the fundamental barrier. We still like to hold up a piece of paper in our hand and look at it from time to time, jot notes directly at the margins, rather than type for every little corrections. Moreover, for architects and other engineering professionals, physically scanning the page from top to bottom, is more sure-fire way to spot? an error than scrolling a large drawing and zooming in and out of it. It simply does not work ! I know that from personal experience. So how does one adhere to reduction of paper use and not face the cumbersome process of electronic tracking on a small computer screen ?

The answer lies in using something with is instantly portable, transferable, editable and yet not a traditional paper. E-Paper ! Yes, something which was born in the 1970?s has matured enough to be taken seriously. The first flexible EPD for consumers could be available in Europe in 2012 itself.

This is one of the spectacular proof that, it is the Business and Industry which will finally be the torch bearers of abatement to Climate Change and Global Warming. And innovation should get support from all quarters to survive the vagaries of market forces. And ones which are as important as Saving forest and whole eco-system the Governments should support it. But before we put some thought as to how we can support and grow such ideas let us understand what it is -

Electronic paper, e-paper and electronic ink are display technologies which are designed to mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Unlike conventional backlit flat panel displays which emit light, electronic paper displays reflect light like ordinary paper. Many of the technologies can hold static text and images indefinitely without using electricity, while allowing images to be changed later. Flexible electronic paper uses plastic substrates and plastic electronics for the display backplane.
Electronic paper display (EPD) is often considered to be more comfortable to read than conventional displays. This is due to the stable image, which has no need to be refreshed constantly and has a wider viewing angle. An ideal e-paper display can be read in direct sunlight without the image appearing to fade. The contrast ratio in available displays as of 2008 might be described as similar to that of newspaper, though newly-developed displays are slightly better. There is ongoing competition among manufacturers to provide full-color ability.
Applications of electronic visual displays include electronic pricing labels in retail shops, and digital signage, time tables at bus stations, electronic billboards, mobile phone displays, and e-readers able to display digital versions of books and e-paper magazines. Electronic paper should not be confused with digital paper, which is a pad to create handwritten digital documents with a digital pen.

What an innovation. A genius of the human brain which can bring about sea change in the way we work. Tied to a e-book reader, a tablet, a computer and a smart phone, this was perhaps the penultimate tool, which can eliminate maximum use of paper; before we can adopt interactive projections in thin air in front of us, as shown in Sci-fi cinemas and is? some more time in becoming a reality for common persons to have.

So what could be the immediate uses, other than being another TV or a display kiosk? To my mind it can be used for printing architectural drawings, and each of these sheet can be reused till the final design to be produced is readied. And only those need be printed. Sure there would be trials and errors but human always find methods if there is a will. It could also act as submission sheets during class tests which are held with regularity in schools to prepare children for their annual and mid-term exams. The data can always be transferred into flash -drives for storage, thus refreshing the sheets for reuse, while still retaining record of previous data. Perhaps News corporations could devise ways where one could download the ?News Paper view? form e-papers which already exist in the web and in fact they can rent out the flex-sheets, and charge as they would for the subscription. It is common knowledge that? amount of pulp that required daily to publish news papers are humongous.

But, as with Renewable Energy, such high technology would come at a price which would not be within reach of the common person. And here the Governments, guided by the UNEP and other responsible organisations like the World Bank, World Resources Institute, Climate Action International, Green Peace, Carbon Disclosure Project etc should come together to focus in finding the right financial instruments which would help scale it and make it affordable. In fact small amounts from those that are pledged under various programs to arrest deforestation and abate climate change could be pooled to make such innovations; I?m sure many more equally important are around the corner; a success.

In fact if the news paper readers from world over could just contribute $1 the amount would be huge, and in the bargain the Earth would gain.

Papa Don?t Preach

Its chief pain, meanwhile, concerns a lot of monkeying with the visual texture of things. Hemingway & Gellhorn constantly slips from color to black-and-white to sepia tones and skips among illusions of various film stocks. There has been an attempt to match the actors? scenes with file footage of loyalists on the march in Madrid and pedestrians out for a stroll in Manhattan, and you may be offended, late in a movie so generally trifling, to see that Gellhorn?s visit to Dachau includes film of the prisoners? corpses. The actors, via special effects, frequently walk through repurposed newsreels like so many Zeligs and Gumps. The technique proves most memorably risible when combined with recontextualized quotes?when, for instance, Hemingway, admiring a soldier, turns to Gellhorn and says, ?Look at that fucking grace under pressure.? When Hemingway is in conversation with someone who has been on the cover of Time, it is extremely likely that said cover will appear in the scene, and when he settles in to binge on Hemingway daiquiris, he recites the recipe very clearly. It is certain that the filmmakers have done their homework and no less certain that they?ve constructed an awkward digital diorama.

Stunning image of smallest possible five rings

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Scientists have created and imaged the smallest possible five-ringed structure -- about 100,000 times thinner than a human hair -- and you'll probably recognize its shape.

A collaboration between the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the University of Warwick and IBM Research -- Zurich has allowed the scientists to bring a single molecule to life in a picture, using a combination of clever synthetic chemistry and state-of-the-art imaging techniques.

The scientists decided to make and visualize olympicene whose five-ringed structure was entered on ChemSpider, the RSC's free online chemical database of over 26 million records two years ago.

"When doodling in a planning meeting, it occurred to me that a molecular structure with three hexagonal rings above two others would make for an interesting synthetic challenge," said Professor Graham Richards CBE, RSC Council member.

"I wondered: could someone actually make it, and produce an image of the actual molecule?"

Chemists at the University of Warwick, Dr David Fox and Anish Mistry, used some clever synthetic organic chemistry -- the modern molecule designer's toolbox -- to build olympicene.

"Alongside the scientific challenge involved in creating olympicene in a laboratory, there's some serious practical reasons for working with molecules like this," said Dr Fox.

"The compound is related to single-layer graphite, also known as graphene, and is one of a number of related compounds which potentially have interesting electronic and optical properties.

"For example these types of molecules may offer great potential for the next generation of solar cells and high-tech lighting sources such as LEDs."

A first glimpse of the molecule's structure was obtained by Dr Giovanni Costantini and Ben Moreton at Warwick using scanning tunneling microscopy. A higher resolution technique was however needed to unravel its atomic-level anatomy.

To truly bring olympicene to life, the Physics of Nanoscale Systems Group at IBM Research -- Zurich in Switzerland analyzed the chemical structure of olympicene with unprecedented resolution using a complex technique known as noncontact atomic force microscopy. Using the technique IBM scientists imaged a single olympicene molecule just 1.2 nanometers in width, about 100,000 times thinner than a human hair.

"The key to achieving atomic resolution was an atomically sharp and defined tip apex as well as the very high stability of the system," explains IBM scientist Dr. Leo Gross. "We prepared our tip by deliberately picking up single atoms and molecules and showed that it is the foremost tip atom or molecule that governs the contrast and resolution of our AFM measurements."

This technique was first published in the journal Science back in August 2009.

The chemical recipes for making olympicene, along with a whole range of other molecules, are posted on the ChemSpider Synthetic Pages (CSSP), where scientists can record and share the best ways to do specific reactions.

U.S. criticizes Israel's treatment of African migrants in human rights report

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton presented on Thursday the State Department's 2011 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices that criticizes Israel for its treatment of African migrants, an issue vigorously debated in Israeli public discourse lately.

The report states that Sudanese and Eritrean asylum seekers, which are about 85 percent of African migrants in Israel "were not allowed access to asylum procedures but were given renewable 'conditional release' documents that deferred deportation and had to be renewed every few months."

The report quotes statistics provided by the UNHCR, showing that during the year out of 4,603 new asylum applications 3,692 were rejected. Only one was approved. 6,412 cases remained pending at year?s end.

The report also critically mentioned that the Israeli government officials "often negatively referred to asylum seekers as 'infiltrators' and periodically characterized asylum seekers as directly associated with rises in crime, disease, and terrorism."
The report specifically mentions December 2011 interview of the Minister of Interior Eli Yishai with the IDF radio, in which he promised to "ensure that the last of the Sudanese, and the Eritreans, and all of the infiltrators, to the last of them, will return to their countries.?

The report also referred to criticism by NGO's of "the lack of medical treatment upon arrival for asylum seekers who had been abused, raped, and tortured in Egypt" and the petition filed by one of NGO's in the Be?er Sheva District Court "regarding the segregation of children of asylum seekers in the city of Eilat, who were not accepted into the school system but forced to study in a makeshift school outside of Eilat?s municipal boundary."

Meanwhile, the Anti-Defamation League expressed "serious concern" on Thursday following the violent protest against African migrants in southern Tel-Aviv. Abraham Foxman, ADL National Director, said in a statement that "while we recognize the complexity involved in properly addressing this issue, and sympathize with Israeli citizens whose personal security has been compromised by the lawlessness and violence of some migrants, we are disturbed by inflammatory public statements made by certain Israeli officials, some of which has veered into racism. These statements are counterproductive and only serve to further inflame tensions."

Foxman called on all parties "to work to calm the tensions" and commended Prime Minister Netanyahu for his condemnation of the inflammatory comments by the members of Knesset that took part in the demonstration, and "his commitment to resolving this crisis responsibly."

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs President Rabbi Steve Gutow said Israeli authorities "must see that this vulnerable population, some of whom were forced from their homes by politically and racially motivated persecution, is fully protected." Recognizing the challenge the constant flow of migrants poses to Israel, Gutow said that it's "never an excuse for violence and bigotry. We hope and expect that the authorities will take effective measures to protect this population from further violence and that legitimate requests by refugees to remain in Israel based on fear of persecution in their home countries will be considered humanely and with due process taking into account internationally accepted norms."

JCPA Chair Larry Gold added: "We join with Prime Minister Netanyahu and others in condemning the violence and xenophobic statements from some political quarters."

Asian markets rise as Greece hopes spur buying

Asian markets rose for a second straight day on Tuesday as dealers picked up bargains after heavy selling through May, with confidence boosted by hopes that Greece will avoid exiting the eurozone.

Shares also received a lift on hopes that China will implement new stimulus measures to raise domestic demand and fast track some major construction projects.

Investors, however, remained nervous by eurozone woes as attention turned to Spain, where a growing banking and borrowing crisis has raised fears the country could be forced to ask for a bailout.

Tokyo rose 0.74 percent, or 63.93 points, to 8,657.08, with Panasonic gaining 3.87 percent to end at 536 yen following reports that it may halve its 7,000-strong Osaka headquarters as part of a bid to streamline the Japanese electronics giant following record annual losses.

Nomura Holdings rose 1.93 percent at 264 yen despite a report that Japan's securities watchdog will likely to ask financial regulators to take action against the investment bank over its alleged involvement in insider trading.

The Seoul market added 1.41 percent, or 25.74 points, to close at 1,849.91 while Sydney gained 1.14 percent, or 46.4 points, at 4,114,4.

Hong Kong closed 1.35 percent higher, adding 254.47 points to 19,055.46 and Shanghai rose 1.20 percent, or 28.27 points, up at 2,389.64.

Global markets have been in a downward spiral since May 6 elections in Greece saw anti-austerity parties -- who have promised to tear up terms of a bailout package -- post huge gains.

With no clear winner the country has been hit by political uncertainty until another election on June 17, with analysts warning anti-bailout groups would win and in turn see Athens leave the euro.

However, weekend opinion polls showed the pro-austerity conservatives in front, fuelling hopes Athens will eventually comply with the terms of the European Union-International Monetary Fund rescue deal.

While concerns that Greece could exit the eurozone remain high, Spain's struggles have come to the fore in the past week after Bankia, one of the country's biggest lenders, asked for $24 billion in state aid.

In Madrid Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Monday the country was struggling to borrow as the yields on benchmark Spanish bonds soared to 6.479 percent, considered too high for governments to keep servicing their debts.

However, he tried to soothe investors by saying that his government would not have to follow Greece, Ireland and Portugal in asking for a bailout to help pay its bills.

"Systemic risk is on the rise, and the problems have increasingly become circular, with banks themselves large holders of government debt," ANZ Research analysts said in a note.

"Spain has become another problem child for the (European Union)," it said.

The euro bought $1.2534 in Asian trade, against $1.2543 in London, while it was at 99.67 yen compared with 99.95 yen. US markets were closed Monday for a holiday.

The dollar was at 79.50 yen Tuesday, from 79.52 yen in London.

Shares in Shanghai and Hong Kong shares were given an added lift by a report in the state-run Shanghai Securities News that Beijing would introduce measures to jumpstart demand for automobiles.

The news stoked expectations of more stimulus for other parts of the economy after a string of recent data indicating the world's number two economy is easing.

"Investors can find opportunities in sectors like railroads, airlines, cars, water conservation, green energy, cement and heavy metals," Wang Bo, an analyst at China Minzu Securities, said.

"These are all areas that will get a boost in corporate profit as Beijing rolls out sector-specific stimulus projects here," he added, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

On oil markets New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate crude for delivery in July was up 79 cents at $91.65 per barrel while Brent North Sea crude for July up 47cents to $107.58 in the late afternoon.

Gold was at $1,576.40 an ounce at 0805 GMT, compared with $1,578.70 late Monday.

In other markets:

-- Wellington rose 0.46 percent, or 16.04 points, to 3,478.29.

Telecom was up 1.57 percent at NZ$2.58 while Fletcher Building gained 1.79 percent to NZ$6.25.

-- Manila closed 1.42 percent, or 70.37 points, up at 5,023.11.

GT Capital Holdings rose 3.10 percent to 498 pesos, Universal Robina added 1.50 percent to 61 pesos and Philippine Long Distance Telephone fell 1.79 percent to 2,306 pesos.

-- Taipei surged 2.89 percent, or 206.29 points, to 7,342.29.

Leading smartphone maker HTC rose 4.10 percent to Tw$432.0 while Hon Hai Precision gained 4.80 percent at Tw$89.5.

As Beryl approaches, mayor asks residents to heed warnings, prepare

11 a.m.: National Hurricane Center: Beryl strengthens

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center shows Beryl gaining strength, with sustained winds at 60 mph. The storm is located 125 miles to the east of Jacksonville and moving west at 10 mph. Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the coast late this morning or early afternoon. Landfall is expected this evening. Rain totals of 3 to 6 inches are possible.

8:45 a.m.: Mayor asks residents to take caution, prepare for storm

At a morning news conference at the city's Emergency Operations Center, Mayor Alvin Brown encouraged residents to take caution and prepare for subtropical storm Beryl.

"I am encouraging all area residents to stay indoors and off the streets as the storm approaches,? Brown said. "And please do not go into the water today. Stay out of the water ??it's about safety."

Brown also encouraged business owners to close early today to allow employees to get home safely and prepare for the storm.

No mandatory evacuations have been issued, he said.

Residents should prepare, however, for localized flooding, downed trees and downed power lines. "Don't become compacent; take this very seriously," he stressed.

An emergency shelter for those with special needs will open at noon today at the Legends Center at 5130 Soutel Drive near Moncrief Road in Northwest Jacksonville.

He said that he expects garbage pick-up on Monday will be halted.

At this time, there are not plans to close Jacksonville International Airport and there are no bridge closures, he said. Updates on the Jacksonville Port Authority are forthcoming.

Additionally, the mayor said he signed a declaration of emergency, paving the way for federal assistance if needed.

Updates on the city's official Memorial Day activities are expected later this morning.

For more information, residents can call 630-2489 (630-CITY) or visit jaxready.org.

Our earlier story:

Subtropical storm Beryl is churning ever closer to the Southeast U.S. coast, threatening Memorial Day beachgoers with dangerous surf and drenching rains from Northeast Florida to the Carolinas.

The National Hurricane Center said Beryl was centered at 8 a.m. about 165 miles east of Jacksonvile. Forecasters said the system has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and is moving west-southwest at 10 mph.

In advance of the storm, the City of Jacksonville and Mayor Alvin Brown have canceled today's Jacksonville Jazz Festival activities with the sole exception of the jazz brunch event at downtown's Omni Hotel.

With dangerous rip currents present, the city also has closed the beaches for swimming.

The city will open a special-needs shelter at the Legends Center at Soutel and Moncrief in Northwest Jacksonville at noon. Anyone electricity- and oxygen-dependent should use this shelter if there are power outages or flooding.

Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Northeast Florida, stretching from south of St. Augustine northward along the coasts of Georgia and parts of South Carolina. The Miami-based hurricane center says the storm is expected to make landfall Sunday night or early Monday.

Beryl is technically considered a "subtropical storm," its thunderstorms capable of generating dangerous surf and rains of up to 3 to 6 inches.

Cowgirl tennis qualifies for NCAA tournament

A small room erupted in celebration in Gallagher-Iba on Tuesday evening, for the OSU women?s tennis team received the news that its season would continue.

Coach Chris Young and his team huddled around a large screen TV to hear their name announced as one of the 64 teams that will compete in the NCAA Women?s Tennis Team Tournament.

?I?m really excited for the girls,? Young said. ?When I came here three years ago, I knew the challenges that were ahead of us. Today is the culmination of three years of hard work and determination, and it?s great for the girls.?

The Cowgirls will face Georgia Tech in the first round, a welcomed opponent.

?I knew that we would be right there playing a team that is pretty even with us,? Young said. ?We have seen them quite a bit. When you have some familiarity for an opponent, it helps us prepare for the moment.?

The Cowgirls? first match in the single-elimination tournament will be May 11, and Young said his team would be well prepared.

?I have experience in this, understanding how the schedule works out this first week will be tricky with finals, but after this week my experience will help them make the transition to post season,? Young said.

Junior C. C. Sardinha anticipated the reward of a postseason, and her hopes built up going into the selection show.

?We are pumped,? Sardinha said. ?There were hints that we would get in. It was just nice to finally hear it.?

Sardinha echoed the confidence that the Cowgirls are taking into the postseason and gave a glimpse of what has been behind the team?s success this season.

?We will play Stanford, UCLA, anyone; bring it on,? she said.

If the Cowgirls knock down their first three opponents, they could face UCLA in the quarterfinals, but that is a long way off.

Malika Rose, a junior for the Cowgirls, said the team is focused on the task at hand.

?We had this goal at the beginning of the year, but we didn?t think it was that close,? Rose said. ?We just want to take it one match at a time and focus on our advantage in the doubles matchups.?

Hollywood Dreams Led Chinese Firm To Buy Into U.S.

Ng Han Guan/AP

Moviegoers watch a 3-D IMAX movie at a Beijing theater run by the Chinese company Wanda, which recently announced it was buying AMC movie theaters for $2.6 billion. The move is seen as part of a larger effort by the Chinese conglomerate to move into the U.S. market.

One of the big movie blockbusters this year isn't a film, but a business deal.

The Chinese company Wanda, one of that country's leading cinema owners, is buying AMC Entertainment, North America's second-largest movie theater company, for $2.6 billion.

When the agreement was announced in China this week, it did not make a lot of sense at first glance. At least for the buyer.

AMC is loaded with some $2 billion in debt, and movie theater attendance in North America was down 4 percent last year.

Wanda, meanwhile, owns 730 screens in China, the world's fasting-growing movie market.

But analysts say there's a logic behind Wanda's move. Aiden Sun, a senior analyst with Entgroup, a Chinese entertainment research company, says Wanda also wants to push into movie production.

Buying an American cinema company would bring Wanda that much closer to Hollywood.

Wanda's strategy isn't only to make profit from its cinema investment. A bigger part of it is to take Wanda's other businesses ? like hotels ? overseas through this channel. This is the idea behind its internationalization plan.

"They are talking now to some famous producers and distribution companies, not only in the U.S., but also globally," he says. "And they want to cooperate with them to start co-production in China."

A Wide Range Of Holdings

Movie theaters are just a small part of Wanda's holdings. The company brings in $17 billion a year in revenue from nearly 50 shopping plazas, 40 department stores and more than two dozen five-star hotels.

But China's property market is cooling. And analysts think Wanda may be looking to AMC as a base in the U.S. where it could buy up commercial real estate at bargain prices.

"Wanda's strategy isn't only to make a profit from its cinema investment," says Gao Shouzhi, Entgroup's CEO. "A bigger part of it is to take Wanda's other businesses ? like hotels ? overseas through this channel. This is the idea behind its internationalization plan."

The Communist Party is trying to improve China's image abroad and wants to use culture ? including movies ? to do so.

Does that mean Wanda is looking to use AMC to mass export Chinese films?

Rob Cain, a Los Angeles movie producer and consultant who has lived and worked in China, doubts it.

"There's no way Wanda is going to fill its screens with Chinese movies," Cain says. "People just aren't going to pay to see them."

China's 'Soft Power' Campaign

Chinese conglomerates, even private ones like Wanda, have close ties to the Communist Party. So, Cain says, Wanda might give a little push to China's so-called "soft power" campaign and show the occasional Chinese film or travel ad.

"I can see smaller ways where they could be good, patriotic Chinese citizens to help China spread its message around the world," Cain says.

Wanda's purchase of AMC comes at a time of staggering growth in China's movie theater business.

China has been adding about eight movie screens a day, according to Rance Pow, who runs Aristan Gateway, a cinema investment consultancy and research house with offices in Shanghai.

A Revolution In Chinese Cinemas

Pow says what's driving that growth is rising incomes, better Chinese movies and new, state-of-the-art theaters.

"There is a whole generation of moviegoers now who are growing up with cinema as part of their life and with more dollars in their pockets to spend for fun," Pow says. "They're choosing to go to see the movies as a priority."

The difference between going to see a movie 10 or 15 years ago in China versus today is dramatic. Back then, you'd go to an individual theater. Chances are it hadn't been renovated in years; there were broken seats and a bad sound system.

At a Wanda cineplex today in Shanghai, there are 10 screens including an IMAX screen with stadium seating.

Shi Huihui is leaving a matinee of the Avengers 3-D with her husband and 3-year-old son, Chen Qiyu. Shi is in her 30s and works as an accountant.
A decade ago, she says, she mostly watched movies on pirated DVDs.

"Now I normally go to the movies to watch blockbusters," she says. "First, you can't watch a 3-D movie at home. Second, you can't get the experience of all this entertainment technology at home."

More and more Chinese seem to feel the same way. Industry analysts expect China's box office to top Japan's this year to become the world's second-largest.

China has about 10,000 screens ? a little more than a quarter of the number in the U.S. That leaves a lot of room to grow.

Google Didn't Infringe on Oracle Patents, Jury Finds

Android and Java logosGoogle has claimed victory in the second phase of its high-profile legal battle with Oracle.

A U.S. federal court jury ruled that the company did not infringe on Oracle patents with its use of Java components in its Android platform. The jury found against Oracle in each of the eight claims it was asked to assess.

The ruling brings an end to second phase in the two companies' ongoing battle over the use of Java code in the Android platform. Oracle had previously won a partial victory on the matter of copyright infringement, though the jury remained split on other elements of the case.

While the decision brings an end to the jury phase of the trial, the battle between Oracle and Google looks far from over. A number of issues remain to be resolved and appeals from both sides are likely.

"[The] jury verdict that Android does not infringe Oracle?s patents was a victory not just for Google but the entire Android ecosystem," Google said in a statement.

At the time of publishing Oracle had yet to respond to a request for comment.

The patent portion of the trial represented a far less important phase than the copyright matter, according to Florian Mueller, an intellectual property expert and activist who has closely followed the case.

"It would have been desirable, but less than secondary, for Oracle to prevail on its patent claims," Mueller wrote in a blog post.?"Oracle itself made this set of priorities perfectly clear when it offered in mid-January to stay, or dismiss without prejudice, all of its patent claims in favour of a near-term copyright trial."

Mueller said that the next key step in the case will likely be a decision from the judge regarding copyright eligibility in a number of Java APIs.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in New Mexico plans vigil, flag march for Memorial Day weekend

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Victor ?Doc? Westphall created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire, N.M., after his eldest son, David Westphall, was killed in Vietnam in 1968.

He dedicated his life to building and maintaining the memorial, which is now a state park.

In February of 2003, as the United States prepared for war with Iraq, I interviewed Doc Westphall by phone about his work and its larger meaning.

Just this month, I detoured off I-25 south heading for Santa Fe to visit the memorial (about four hours south of Denver). It?s a strange-feeling place ? ?70s architecture and a Huey helicopter perched high on a hill in northern New Mexico.

The New Mexico National Guard placed the Huey "Viking Surprise" at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in 1999.

I wandered the grounds, Memorial Day-ready with hundreds of American flags, and learned that Doc Westphall died on July 22, 2003, just months after our interview. The clouds gathered in the west as tears collected in my eyes.

Here?s what Doc Westphall told me in 2003:

I was in Borneo during World War II when the cessation of hostilities with Japan was declared. I saw an American soldier and a Japanese POW bouncing along in an American jeep like they were buddies, and I thought, why was war necessary if only a half-day after the announcement they should be friends?

I saw the stark reality and futility of it all. I can see that image today as clear as if it were yesterday.

After the war, I went to college on the GI bill and got a Ph.D. in history, and started a construction business that built 2,000 houses in Albuquerque. For some unknown reason I decided to buy the Valverde ranch in 1966.

The death of our son in Vietnam triggered the memorial, but the fundamental reason was the futility of war. I knew from the beginning that it was destined to be unusual in some way. In World War II veterans came home to admiration and adulation, but Vietnam veterans came home to feelings of hatred and apathy.

It?s a very interesting place to be because it?s literally a cross section of the world right here. Frequently (visitors) are reluctant to even enter the memorial. A fellow who came from back East got to the front gate, turned around and went home. He came back, nearly turned back again, and finally said, ?This is nonsense,? and he came on in.

The memorial has occupied my life for three decades. It?s the central feature of my life. I?m 89, and I?m too busy to die. The memorial has 1,500 photos of deceased vets with a biography of each, and I write them all.

The grief of losing a child is just as strong as ever. It never goes away. It diminishes at times, but it?s always lurking in the background.

More blood has been shed in the name of religion than any other factor. If we?re ever going to eliminate war, we can?t say, ?You take care of it and send us the bill.? The important thing is to not wait until war is upon us, but to conduct the affairs of the world so they are taken care of in advance.

In the final analysis, it is man?s responsibility. He can?t shove it off onto God or anyone else.

You can make heaven right here on Earth.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

On Sunday, May 27, the park will host author, photojournalist and veteran Ted Engelmann at 1 p.m., ?Back from War? author Lee Alley at 3 p.m. candlelight, and a candelight vigil at 7 p.m. Memorial Day events start at 9 a.m. Monday, with a flag march down Highway 434.

Campaign styles clash in Wis. recall race

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and his opponent, Democrat Tom Barrett, are locked together in a fiercely fought recall campaign, but that's where the similarity ends. They don't campaign the same way.

As his historic recall election nears on June 5, Walker delivers his message to voters from a safe distance. His campaign carefully limits all public access and holds events mostly at his campaign offices or at businesses that can restrict who comes in. Most appearances are announced with only a few hours' notice.

Meanwhile, underdog Barrett spends precious campaign time mingling with the masses and making the rounds of farmers markets, coffee shops and parades in search of votes. His campaign publicizes events with the hope of attracting as many people as possible.

The tactics reflect two well-established political strategies and signal the state of the race with less than two weeks to go. Walker holds a slim lead, according to recent polls, built with the financial support of conservatives nationwide who rallied after labor unions helped organize the recall over his anti-union legislation. Walker wants to minimize risks and avoid protesters. Barrett, who won the Democratic nomination to oppose Walker only this month, hopes to strike a spark.

Walker's advisers "want him in a sealed-off, tightly controlled, non-controversial setting because they don't want to rile people up," said Democratic pollster Paul Maslin, a veteran of recall campaigns who worked for California Gov. Gray Davis when he fought unsuccessfully against a recall in 2003. "He can't do retail any more. Like it or not, he's graduated to another level of politics. He just became the symbol of a much bigger fight."

Barrett referred to Walker's style as "clearly a bunker mentality. You can sort of see the formula ? go to a business, talk to the CEO, selected employees, poof, you're on the road."

Walker's spokeswoman, Ciara Matthews, declined comment on the campaign's strategy. Walker is now focused on turning out his supporters to vote rather than winning over the tiny percentage of voters who remain undecided, said Mark Graul, a campaign strategist who ran Republican Mark Green's campaign for governor in 2006.

"Both candidates are doing a lot of things to play to their base, to motivate their voters, because that's what this election is all about," he said.

Nevertheless, the change in Walker is remarkable for a candidate once eager to connect personally with voters and who revels in rapturous receptions at Republican gatherings. He's good at making small talk and, when he ran for governor in 2010 as Milwaukee County executive, appeared at rallies all over the state.

Walker is now a presence mostly in the television advertising saturating the airwaves and brochures arriving in the mail.

He launched his campaign in the recall race with an event on a remote farm where only invited guests and credentialed media were allowed to enter. There would be no awkward questions from unknown attendees.

On Thursday, when Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal came to Wisconsin to co-host a fundraiser with Walker, the campaign provided only four hours notice of the event, which was held in Walker's "victory center" office in conservative Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha. A handful of Walker opponents still found out and showed up outside to protest.

Avoiding protestors has been a priority for Walker ever more 100,000 demonstrators thronged the state Capitol after the Legislature passed a measure stripping public employees of collective bargaining rights. At the height of the tumult he and Republican lawmakers took to coming and going from the Capitol through underground tunnels with a police escort.

For Barrett to win he has to motivate voters who supported President Barack Obama in 2008 but didn't show up for him in his 5-point loss to Walker in 2010.

Barrett's makes regular public appearances, including a recent stop at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student union, where he was greeted by a throng of college-age students, a key demographic he will need if he hopes to beat Walker. Barrett supporters encouraged anyone who wanted to meet the mayor to stick around.

"By definition, any Democrat was going to have to go out to the people more," said Maslin, who served as Barrett's pollster during the 2010 campaign and has advised Democratic candidates in state and national races. "At this stage of the game, the emphasis for Barrett is to be among people, to be exhorting people to vote, to try and gin up every last bit of excitement on the Democratic side."

AUTO INSURANCE: Car insurance and winter driving

For example, did you prepare your vehicle for facing bad weather conditions? After all, it's predictable there will be snow and ice in winter. So did you fit new tires so you would have the maximum possible traction in slippery conditions? Or did you remember to put chains in the trunk so that, when the snow gets deeper, you can still drive reasonably safely? We all know the risk of sliding or skidding out of control. Why then do we fail to take action to protect ourselves and other road users? There are probably several reasons, not the least of which are that this means spending money on buying the chains, some think it inconvenient to fit them, and you cannot drive fast when you have them fitted. The fact local governments may require chains to be fitted as a condition to using the roads in some areas is not considered a reason for action (curiously, there are no chain laws in Florida and Missouri - strange oversight).

Then we come to all those routine maintenance tasks like adding antifreeze and retuning the engine so it's more likely to start when the temperature drops. Did you fit new blades on the windshield to give you better visibility when there's snow fall or a blizzard? And then we come to all the steps to protect you should your vehible break down or be involved in an accident. Do you have an emergency bag packed with warm clothing and blankets should you need to keep warm while rescue comes? You did remember to charge your cell so you could call for help? If you are making a trip cross-country where signal strength may be low, did you tell people when you were expected so they could send out search and rescue teams?

All these things are basic common sense yet, when the first snows hit, we seem to have forgotten to prepare. If accidents are more likely because of this failure and it's shown to be a regular failure, your car insurance rates will rise. If you have been making claims, the car insurance quotes coming in from other insurers will not be welcoming. No insurer wants to take on someone who fails to prepare in the face of obvious dangers. That's why insurers in the states where the weather is worst offer discounts for drivers who go on defensive driving courses and learn how to drive more safely. Your choice!

EU urges Greece to stay in euro, but plans for possible exit

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union leaders, advised by senior officials to prepare contingency plans in case Greece decides to quit the single currency, urged the country to stay the course on austerity and complete the reforms demanded under its bailout program.

After nearly six hours of talks held during an informal dinner, leaders said they were committed to Greece remaining in the euro zone, but it had to stick to its side of the bargain too, a commitment that will mean a heavy cost for Greeks.

"We want Greece to stay in the euro, but we insist that Greece sticks to commitments that it has agreed to," German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters after a Wednesday evening summit in Brussels dragged long into the night.

Three officials told Reuters the instruction to have plans in place for a Greek exit was agreed on Monday during a teleconference of the Eurogroup Working Group (EWG) - experts who work for euro zone finance ministers.

The Greek finance ministry denied there was any such agreement but Belgian Finance Minister Steven Vanackere, said: "All the contingency plans (for Greece) come back to the same thing: to be responsible as a government is to foresee even what you hope to avoid."

Two other senior EU officials confirmed the call and its contents, saying contingency planning was only sensible.

In its monthly report, Germany's Bundesbank said the situation in Greece was "extremely worrying" and it was jeopardizing any further financial aid by threatening not to implement reforms agreed as part of its two bailouts.

It said a euro exit would pose "considerable but manageable" challenges for its European partners, raising pressure on Athens to stick with its painful economic reforms.

Greek officials have said that without outside funds, the country will run out of money within two months and there remains the threat that if it crashes out of the euro zone, other member states could be brought down too.

A document seen by Reuters detailed the potential costs to individual member states of a Greek exit and said that if it came about, an "amiable divorce" should be sought with the EU and IMF possibly giving up to 50 billion euros to ease its path.

Although EU leaders' minds will have been focused by that prospect, disagreements have flared over a plan for mutual euro zone bond issuance and other measures to alleviate two years of debt turmoil, such as giving countries like Spain an extra year to make the spending cuts demanded of them.

"The idea is to put energy into the growth motor. All the member countries don't necessarily share my ideas. But a certain number expressed themselves in the same direction," new French President Francois Hollande told reporters.

For the first time in more than two years of crisis summits, the leaders of France and Germany did not huddle beforehand to agree positions, marking a significant shift in the axis which has traditionally driven European policymaking.

Instead, Hollande met Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in Paris to discuss policy, before the pair travelled to Brussels by train.

Despite fears Greeks could open the departure door if they vote for anti-bailout parties at a June 17 election, Spain, where the economy is in recession and the banking system in need of restructuring, is at the front line of the crisis.

After meeting Hollande, Rajoy said he had no intention of seeking outside aid for Spain's banks, which are laden with bad debts from a property boom that bust and still has some way to go before it touches bottom.

But his government said its rescue of problem lender Bankia would cost at least 9 billion euros and it is also seeking ways to help its highly indebted regions meet huge refinancing bills.

SHIFTING SANDS

Socialist Hollande's election victory has significantly changed the terms of the debate in Europe, with his call for greater emphasis on growth rather than debt-cutting now a rallying cry for other leaders.

That has set up a showdown with conservative Merkel, whose primary objective is budget austerity and structural reform.

At his first EU summit, Hollande chose to make a stand on euro bonds - issuing common euro zone debt - despite consistent German opposition to the idea. "I was not alone in defending euro bonds," he said.

Merkel showed no sign of dropping her objections to the proposal, which she has said can only be discussed once there is much closer fiscal union in Europe. "There were differences in the exchange about euro bonds," she said bluntly.

The Netherlands, Finland and some smaller euro zone member states support her.

No major decisions were made at Wednesday's summit, which was intended to promote ideas on jobs and growth ahead of another meeting at the end of June.

But debate was intense, not just over euro bonds but over how to rescue banks and whether to give more time to struggling euro zone countries to meet their budget deficit goals.

"We haven't come together to confront each other ... but we have to say what we think - what are the right instruments, the right methods, the right steps, the right initiatives to raise growth," Hollande said.

The leaders discussed broad measures to stem the fallout from a winding up or restructuring of bad banks, EU officials said, with the European Central Bank pressing for the bloc to stand behind its struggling lenders but with Merkel's approval seen as far from guaranteed.

At the heart of the discussion are proposals from the European Commission for a legal framework to wind up or reorganize insolvent banks so as to avoid a repeat of the multi-trillion-euro taxpayer bailouts during the financial crisis.

Another suggestion is for the euro zone's rescue funds to be allowed to recapitalize banks directly, rather than having to lend to countries for on-lending to the banks. But that is another idea with which Germany is uncomfortable.

Having rallied on Tuesday, European stocks dropped 2.2 percent as investors priced in a lack of dramatic policy action. The euro tumbled against the dollar to its lowest since August 2010 and Spanish and Italian borrowing costs climbed.

A German two-year debt auction gave a stark illustration of how money is dashing for safe havens. Investors snapped up the 4.5 billion euros of paper on offer even though it came with a zero coupon - offering no return at all.

SEARCH FOR GROWTH

With the euro zone registering no growth in the first quarter and threatening to slip back into recession, policymakers touted three ideas to provide stimulus:

- 'Project bonds' backed by the EU budget to finance infrastructure projects alongside private sector investment.

- Doubling the paid-in capital of the European Investment Bank, the EU's co-financing arm, to a little over 20 billion euros.

- Redirecting structural funds which tend to flow to poorer countries, to other areas where they might reap more immediate growth rewards.

Even if all three proposals were to be activated quickly, economists say they will not provide a sufficient shot in the arm to the euro zone and the wider EU economy.
