Thousands will converge near Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach this weekend, working up an appetite for one of the largest party days in America.
More than 10,000 runners, walkers and spectators are expected at the 34th Annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K/5K on Sunday. For the second year in a row, Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center is the title sponsor.
?Keeping our patients healthy isn?t just our business, it?s our cause,? says Robert Blair, medical group administrator at Kaiser Permanente South Bay. ?We are proud to once again partner with the City Redondo Beach and the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce for this outstanding event, which encourages the community to get up and get moving.?
Super Bowl weekend will kick-off with the 2-day Health and Fitness Expo at the Seaside Lagoon featuring a number of sport and lifestyle exhibits. Hosted by Michelob Ultra, the event will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 6 a.m. to noon as well as in the post-race hospitality area.
?We are excited to have Kaiser Permanente South Bay back as our title sponsor this year, ? says Kevin Carrera, vice president of events for Spectrum Sports Management, Inc. ?The Redondo Beach 10K is a wonderful family Super Bowl Sunday tradition that, with the hard work of the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce, has seen continued growth over the years. The presence of Kaiser Permanente South Bay at the Redondo Beach 10K is a great addition to this event and we look forward to continuing to grow our relationship as we move forward.?
Throughout the weekend, the Expo will include live music, the Michelob Ultra hospitality area. A child?s play area and fitness activities to stimulate the mind, body and spirit. The KP Health Zone will offer freshly picked farmer?s market fruit, child?s play area and fitness activities to stimulate the mind, body and spirit and a mobile health screening area. The Expo is free.
Race day kicks off with the always popular Costume Contest beginning at 7 a.m. The contest features categories of single male; single female; six-pack (comprising six runners); and 10k centipede (of six or more attached to each other). With good weather in the forecast, the event should draw a plethora of costume. In years past, wacky costumes have ranged from spoofs of politicians, to Superheroes, groups of animals and Dolly Madison. With Madonna performing the halftime show at the Super Bowl, don?t be surprised to see the pop icon represented at the race.
The first race of the day is the 5K Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m. The Baby Buggy 10K ensues at 8:15 a.m. followed by the 10K run at 8:30 a.m. The event will also serve as the USATF Southern California 10K Championships.
The early starts leave plenty of time for a pre-game nap or to set up snacks and entrees for Super Bowl XLVI where the New England Patriots and the New York Giants will square off in Indianapolis later in the day.
Entry for 10K, 5K and Baby Buggy 10K is $35 now through race day. A combo package for the 10K and 5K is $60. Corporate teams (maximum of six members) cost $180. The top three male and female finishers in each age group category will receive a custom medal.
Participants can register online and obtain details of the race day schedule by logging on to www.redondo10k.com.
