All eyes on German renewable energy efforts (AP)

FELDHEIM, Germany ? This tiny village in a wind-swept corner of eastern Germany seems an unlikely place for a revolution.

Yet environmentalists, experts and politicians from El Salvador to Japan to South Africa have flocked here in the past year to learn how Feldheim, with just 145 people, is already putting into practice Germany's vision of a future powered entirely by renewable energy.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government passed legislation in June setting the country on course to generate a third of its power through renewable sources ? such as wind, solar, geothermal and bioenergy ? within a decade, reaching 80 percent by 2050, while creating jobs, increasing energy security and reducing harmful emissions.

The goals are among the world's most ambitious, and expensive, and other industrialized nations from the U.S. to Japan are watching to see whether transforming into a nation powered by renewable energy sources can really work.

"Germany can't afford to fail, because the whole world is looking at the German model and asking, can Germany move us to new business models, new infrastructure?" said Jeremy Rifkin, a U.S. economist who has advised the European Union and Merkel.

In June, the nation passed the 20 percent mark for drawing electric power from a mix of wind, solar and other renewables. That compares with about 9 percent in the United States or Japan ? both of which rely heavily on hydroelectric power, a source that has long been used.

Expanding renewables depends on the right mix of resources, as well as government subsidies and investment incentive ? and a willingness by taxpayers to shoulder their share of the burden. Germans currently pay a 3.5 euro cent per kilowatt-hour tax, roughly euro157 ($205) per year for a typical family of four, to support research and investment in and subsidize the production and consumption of energy from renewable sources.

That allows for homeowners who install solar panels on their rooftops, or communities like Feldheim that build their own biogas plants, to be paid above-market prices for selling back to the grid, to ensure that their investment at least breaks even.

Critics, like the Institute for Energy Research, based in Washington, D.C., maintain such tariffs put an unfair burden of expanding renewables squarely on the taxpayer. At the same time, to make renewable energy work on the larger scale, Germany will have to pour billions into infrastructure, including updating its grid.

Key to success of the transformation will be getting the nation's powerful industries on board, to drive innovation in technology and create jobs. According to the Environment Ministry, overall investment in renewable energy production equipment more than doubled to euro29.4 billion ($38.44 billion) in 2011. Solid growth in the sector is projected through the next decade.

Some 370,000 people in Germany now have jobs in the renewable sector, more than double the number in 2004, a point used as proof that tax payers' investment is paying off.

Feldheim has zero unemployment compared with roughly 30 percent in other villages in the economically depressed state of Brandenburg, which views investments in renewables as a ticket for a brighter future. Most residents work in the plant that produces biogas ? fuel made by the breakdown of organic material such as plants or food waste ? or maintain the wind and solar parks that provide the village's electricity.

"The energy revolution is already taking place right here," says Werner Frohwitter, spokesman for the Energiequelle company that helped set up and run Feldheim's energy concept.

But it's not only in the countryside. Earlier this month in Berlin, officials unveiled a prototype of a self-sustaining, energy-efficient home, built from recycled materials and complete with electric vehicles that can be charged in its garage.

The aim of the prototype home is to produce twice as much energy as is used by a family of four ? chosen from a willing pool of volunteers who will be selected to live in the home for 15 months ? through a combination of solar photovoltaics and energy management technology, in order to show the technology already exists to allow people to be energy self-sufficient.

"We want to show people that already today it is possible to live completely from renewable energy," said German Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer as the project, dubbed "Efficiency House Plus," was unveiled. The house is part of a wider euro1.2 million ($1.57 million) project investing in energy-efficient buildings.

"The Efficiency House Plus will set standards that can be adopted by the majority in the short term," Ramsauer told The Associated Press. "The basic principle is that the house produces more energy than needed to live. The extra energy is then used to charge electric-powered cars and bicycles or sold back to the public grid."

Germany's four leading car makers are also participating in the project with BMW AG, Daimler AG, Volkswagen AG and Opel, which is part of Buick's parent company, General Motors Co., each making an E-car for use by in the home.

Such strong cooperation between Germany's industrial sector, coupled with a political landscape that emphasizes stability and a heightened public ecological sensibility, makes Germany fertile ground to lead the way in the transformation from a post-carbon economy to one run on renewable energy.

"Germany has the most robust industrial economy per capita. When you talk about industrial revolution, that's Germany. It's German technology, it's German IT, it's German commutation," said Rifkin, who outlines what he calls the "The Third Industrial Revolution," in a newly released book of the same title that explains how the economies in the future could swap fossil fuels for renewable energies and still maintain growth.

Robert Pottmann, an asset manager with Munich Re, one of the world's biggest reinsurers, says the company seeks to invest about euro2.5 billion ($3.27 billion) in the next few years in renewable energy assets such as "wind farms, solar projects or maybe new electricity grids."

Alan Simpson, an independent energy and climate adviser from Britain who visited Feldheim as part of a wider tour of Germany last month to see what the renewable revolution looks like up close said it was inspiring to view what is being accomplished on the ground.

"It's great to think about Germany delivering on everything that we are being told in Great Britain is impossible," Simpson said.

Amid the excitement, there is also an awareness of the real need for the German experiment to succeed.

"If Germany can't pull this off," said Rifkin. "We don't have a plan B."

Rumor: Apple Will Debut Two iPads Next Month, Retina Displays In Tow

Screen shot 2011-12-29 at 9.04.42 AMThe Apple rumor mill never takes a break, even during the holidays. In the past months we've heard two very specific allegations concerning the iPad — both out of Digitimes — focused on a smaller sized Apple tab at 8.75 inches and a release date of early 2012. As Devin explained so well, the notion of a smaller iPad out of Cupertino is a bit hard to believe. It would mean that Apple is going back on its word that the iPad is the right size. Today Digitimes backtracks from its previous rumor with a new one: Instead of the 7.85-inch iPad, Apple will supposedly be bringing two new Retina-style iPads to the market to fill in the mid- and high-end market segments, while the current iPad 2 hangs around to take on the Kindle Fire.

Egyptian forces raid activists' offices

Egyptian soldiers stand guard outside the U.S.-based National Democratic Institute during a raid Thursday in Cairo.

By Ayman Mohyeldin , NBC News

UPDATED: 3 p.m. ET

CAIRO -- Egyptian security forces raided?17 offices of human rights and and non-governmental groups on Thursday in a move that has triggered widespread fear and condemnation among pro-democracy groups and activists.?

Three?American groups, Freedom House, the National Democratic Institute and the International Republican Institute, were among the organizations whose offices were raided.?

The United States said the harassment should stop immediately and hinted it could review its $1.3 billion in military aid if the raids continue. "This action is inconsistent with the bilateral cooperation we have had over many years," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing.

Police and military forces stormed the offices, confiscating computers, seizing papers and files, and taking down the names of Egyptians working for the organizations.?

According to judicial sources, the raids were ordered by Egypt's general prosecutor's office and were carried out by inspectors from his office with the assistance of military forces and the police.

Judicial sources tell NBC News the raid was part of an ongoing investigation based on complaints that human rights organizations and prominent activists were receiving foreign funding without the appropriate permits and approval from the government, a crime under Egyptian law.

Egyptian military stand guard as officials raid a non-governmental group's office in Cairo on Thursday.

The Arab Network for Human Rights Information quickly denounced the raids, saying they were aimed at "terrorizing activists and organizations to stop their work in fighting against abuse and torture". The network added they and other non-governmental groups feared such a crackdown was imminent and had prepared for it.?

"Even Mubarak's regime did not dare carry out such practices before the revolution,"?it added.?

The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession said its office was one of the 17 raided, and that military forces confiscated documents and computers while preventing its staff from leaving during the raid.

Some rights groups have supported recent protests demanding that the army, in power since February when President Hosni Mubarak was ousted, hand power swiftly to elected civilians. The army has pledged to step aside by mid-2012.

Clashes between protesters and soldiers in Cairo earlier?this month killed 17 people.?

Two of the U.S. groups raided are loosely associated with the U.S. Democratic and Republican political parties. They?say they take a neutral political stance, fostering democracy in Egypt by training members of nascent parties in democratic processes.

"The National Democratic Institute has been training new parties ... in how to participate in elections," a leading member of a liberal party told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "This has been with the full knowledge of authorities and was not clandestine."

The NDI issued a statement noting that some of the groups "are working on observation efforts for the country?s ongoing parliamentary elections. The third and final round for those polls is scheduled to begin on Tuesday."

?Cracking down on organizations whose sole purpose is to support the democratic process during Egypt?s historic transition sends a disturbing signal,? said NDI President Kenneth Wollack.

The International Republican Institute, in its own statement, noted that "it is ironic that even during the Mubarak era IRI was not subjected to such aggressive action."

Freedom House President David Kramer called the raids a sign the military "has no intention of permitting the establishment of?genuine democracy and is attempting to scapegoat civil society for its own abysmal failure to manage Egypt?s transition effectively."

Reuters contributed to this report.

EnGenius ESR300H High Power 300Mbps Wireless N Router

Sometimes you just don't need a dual-band, high-end and expensive router. For those with light wireless needs or light budgets; a cheaper, single-band router is fine for web surfing and sharing Internet access and resources across a small wireless network. EnGenius' ESR300H High Power 300 Mbps Wireless N Router is a small, simple single-band router that sells for about $45. It's cheap, it has a surprising number of features, and it's fairly easy to set up. Unfortunately, abysmal throughput in 802.11b/g/n Mixed Mode and some buggy behavior with the software leads me to rate it well below other single-band routers I've tested.

Specs

The ESR300H is a tiny router, much smaller than competing single-band routers on the market (besides most travel routers, that is). It weighs about a pound and measures 9 by 7.8 by 3 inches (HWD). The diminutive device has a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button on top, along with seven tiny LED lights with labels that those with less-than-perfect eyesight may need a magnifying glass to read.

The LEDs represent power, wireless and WAN status. There's also a corresponding LED for each of the LAN ports. The four LAN ports on the back panel are only Fast Ethernet 10/100?no Gigabit support. The router also has dual external 2DBi antennas. ?The vendor reports maximum throughput at 300 Mbps.

The most interesting physical characteristic of this router is how small it is. Overall, it's an innocuous-looking little plastic black box with two antennas sticking out. Since current routers tend to have internal antennas, the EHR300H looks dated.

Setup

The router ships with a CD, although you can set up the device manually without the disc. Setup is not wireless; a computer hard-wired to the router is required. The EnGenius Smart Wizard interface launches from the CD. The interface is sharp and helpful enough to walk a user through the preliminary setup steps: connecting cables, powering up the router, and getting to the configuration page.

The problem is that once you first get to the router's configuration page it is not clear in the interface what you should do next. At this point of setup, the router was connected to the Internet and up and running but I still had not configured an SSID, security or any other wireless settings. The interface gives several options: "Home," "Wizard," "Network Settings," and "Logout." I selected "Wizard" because the router still needed to be configured, but I can imagine this confusing users who already launched the EnGenius Smart Wizard.

Selecting "Wizard" within the interface did take me to the wireless configuration screen. A feature I found bothersome was security setup. Instead of displaying the usual security choices like WEP, WPA, WPA2 , the ESR300H's interface allows users to set security levels as "None," "Medium," or "High." It is not clear which level of encryption you are selecting until after you make the choice. For instance, in the interface I selected "High." Once I clicked "Next" to apply the setting, I then saw in the status screen area of the interface that my security was set to "WPA2-PSK." I want to know exactly what security level I am applying before I apply it.

Features, Performance and Some Testing Road Bumps

EnGenius certainly packs a lot of functionality into the device, but not all of the features work well. Setting parental controls, which really is just an Access Control List, proved to be messy. Even worse, once I defined a URL or keyword to block for a specific machine connected to the routers, that machine was not blocked from accessing the URL or keyword from a browser. Parental controls did not work even after a browser cache flush.

I ran into another issue attempting to login to the interface from the computer I used to set up the router. The computer was now connected wirelessly to the router rather than wired, so it had a new IP address. When I attempted to get into the administrator interface the system flashed the message, "Duplicate administrator. If you want to login from this PC, please logout or wait for timeout." I waited about ten minutes and still got the message. Reopening my browser session enabled me to login. I suppose this is a security measure, but it seems flaky in operation.

The router can run in AP or WDS (repeater) mode. It supports up to 4 SSIDs, firewall mapping, DMZ and VPN Pass-through. QoS, NAT, Wake Up on LAN and UPnP are some additional features. The QoS is actually one of the more straight-forward and easy to configure modules within the interface.

The router delivered terrible performance in Mixed Mode, among the worst we've seen for single-band routers in the last two years:

As you can see, Engenius' own ESR9855G Multimedia Enhanced Wireless 300N Gaming Router router had far superior throughput results.

Here are the throughput results in 802.11N-only mode:

The results in 802.11n-only mode are much better. However, most users of single-band routers often have legacy devices that do not connect at the 802.11n standard. Preferable, a single-band router will have its best results in Mixed Mode.

The ESR300H Verdict: Skip It

Engenius' ESR300H is a router at a great price. Yet that low price point comes with other costs: abysmal performance in Mixed Mode and wonky software. A better choice for an affordable, single-band router is Engenius' ESR9855G or our Editors' Choice, the Cisco Linksys E1200 Wireless-N Router.

India, Pakistan renew talks to avert nuclear clash

South Asia's nuclear neighbors, India and Pakistan, tentatively agreed Tuesday to renew an agreement that aims to reduce the risk of an accidental nuclear war.

After two days of confidence-building talks in the Pakistani capital - the first such talks in four years - diplomats from both nations said they would recommend that their governments extend a pact that requires the countries to give prior notice of impending strategic weapon activity, such as ballistic missile tests, according to a statement by Pakistan's Foreign Affairs Ministry.

While there was no major agreement, the talks signaled an effort by the two neighbors and rivals to rebuild relations after a November 2008 attack by Pakistani terrorists on India's commercial capital of Mumbai. India had suspended peace talks with Pakistan after the three-day assault by the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist group, which left 164 people dead.

Talks resumed after the prime ministers of the two nations - which have fought each other in three wars - held several exploratory meetings on the sidelines of international events.

In fact, the usually tense India-Pakistan rivalry appears to have warmed slightly in recent months, with an agreement in November to lift most restrictions on bilateral trade and Pakistani entertainers making inroads into India's huge film industry.

That has coincided with the emergence of a new main threat in the eyes of the Pakistani public: the United States, whose forces killed 25 Pakistani soldiers in a "friendly fire" incident in November along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. Pakistanis are furious that the U.S. hasn't apologized for the incident, which a Pentagon investigation blamed last week on poor coordination between U.S. and Pakistani forces but concluded was initiated by Pakistani border troops.

India and Pakistan conducted tit-for-tat nuclear weapons tests in May 1998. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a leading global watchdog on arms proliferation, estimates that Pakistan possesses 90 to 100 warheads, while India is thought to have 60 to 80.

At the meeting in Islamabad, Indian and Pakistani officials also agreed to consider broadening the pact to add other measures, such as requiring advance notice of cruise missile tests, which are currently excluded. Both countries have conducted cruise missile tests this year.

Pakistan officially adopted a "first strike" posture in 2000, citing the overwhelming superiority of India's conventional forces. Islamabad is thought to have developed a number of "red lines" that, if tripped, would trigger the launch of Pakistan's largely ballistic missile-based nuclear arsenal at Indian strategic, military and economic targets.

Although never publicly declared, the red lines are thought to include an Indian attack on Pakistan's nuclear installations or the capture of a major Pakistani city.

India has adopted a no-first-strike posture based on its far stronger military and a wider potential field of nuclear conflict that focuses on China, Pakistan's key ally. China and India are strategic rivals, and they fought a brief border war in 1962.

India has made rapid advances this year in its ballistic missile program and is preparing to test in February the Agni-V, a missile with a range of about 3,400 miles that Indian defense analysts have dubbed the "China-killer."

Indian and Pakistani officials on Monday reviewed existing confidence-building measures between their armed forces, notably the five-year cease-fire along their disputed border in the Himalayan state of Kashmir.

Pakistan proposed that both sides withdraw their long-range artillery guns to positions at least 19 miles from the border to help reduce casualties in the case of a skirmish. The distance is equivalent to the approximate maximum firing range of artillery guns.

India will respond to that proposal at the next round of talks, whose date hasn't been set.

The talks were held against the backdrop of a conventional arms race between Pakistan and India, which over the past five years has become the world's largest weapons importer in a bid to reflect its emergence as a global economic power. India is expected in early 2012 to award a $10 billion contract for a new fleet of cutting-edge air force jets.

It has shortlisted the Rafale, made by France's Dassault Aviation, and the Typhoon, built by the Eurofighter consortium, for the order. Competing bids by two American firms, Lockheed Martin and Boeing, were rejected earlier this year.

Pakistan has responded by jointly developing the JF-17 Thunder warplane with China, which made the unusual concession of allowing the plane to be built exclusively in Pakistan.

Sears to close 100-120 Kmart, Sears Full-line stores (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Sears Holdings Corp will close up to 120 stores in its Kmart and namesake chains, blaming poor sales of consumer electronics so far this holiday season and saying it would focus its energy on its better performing stores.

Sales at Sears Holdings, whose chairman and top shareholder is hedge fund manager Edward Lampert, have fallen every year since it was formed through the merger of Sears and Kmart in 2005.

And so far this holiday season, the drop has continued. Same-store sales at Kmart were down 4.4 percent in the current quarter through Christmas Day, and down 6 percent at Sears' U.S. stores. Companywide, they were down 5.2 percent, the company said on Tuesday.

Sears said that typically, it would keep "marginally performing" stores open to give them time to improve, but "we no longer believe that to be the appropriate action in this environment."

The store closings follow its announcement last quarter it would shutter 10 stores. Kmart and Sears have a combined 2,177 U.S. full service locations and another 500 in Canada.

Sears blamed poor consumer electronics sales in a tough economic environment "especially for big-ticket items" for more than half of the decline in its namesake chain's domestic same-store sales.

It even reported lower layaway sales, which are designed to allow lower income shoppers to pay for items in installments.

Sears Holdings said the lower sales and margin pressure would lead to adjusted fourth-quarter earnings before interest, debt and amortization of less than half of the year-ago quarter's $933 million figure.

Last month, Sears reported a much wider than expected quarterly loss as higher markdowns and pricing pressures in appliances squeezed margins.

The retailer, home to brands including Craftsman tools and Kenmore appliances, expects to earn $140 million to $170 million by selling of inventory in affected stores and selling or subleasing store space.

Sears also expects to record a non-cash charge of $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion in the fourth quarter related to a valuation allowance on certain deferred tax assets.

IBM's Watson Shows up for Work at Cedars-Sinai's Cancer Center

IBM's Watson supercomputer is about to begun work evaluating evidence-based cancer treatment options that can be delivered to the physician in a matter of seconds for assessment.

IBM and WellPoint, which is Blue Cross Blue Shield's largest health plan, are building applications that will essentially turn the Watson computer into an adviser for oncologists at Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute in Los Angeles, according to Steve Gold, director of worldwide marketing for IBM Watson Solutions.

Cedars-Sinai's historical data on cancer as well as its current clinical records will be ingested into an iteration of IBM's Watson that will reside at WellPoint's headquarters. The computer will act as a medical data repository on multiple types of cancer. WellPoint will then work with Cedars-Sinai physicians to design and develop applications as well as validate their capabilities.

Dr. M. William Audeh, medical director of the cancer institute, will work closely with WellPoint's clinical experts to provide advice on how the Watson may be best used in clinical practice to support increased understanding of the evolving body of knowledge on cancer, including emerging therapies not widely known by physicians.

Watson Solves Problems

IBM announced earlier this year that healthcare would be the first commercial application for the computer, which defeated two human champions on the popular television game show Jeopardy! in February.

WellPoint partnered with IBM this fall to develop Watson-based applications intended to improve patient care through the use of evidence-based medicine, which is designed to standardize patient treatments by identifying proven best practices. A simple example of evidence-based medicine in action is when a provider automatically places someone who has suffered a heart attack on an aspirin regimen upon leaving the hospital. Cedars-Sinai is the first application of the partnership.

"Where Watson really lends itself to solving problems is information rich opportunities and the information is changing constantly and in various forms, structure and unstructured coming from disparate systems," IBM 's Gold said. "Healthcare fits that requirement exceptionally well."

Custom Configuration

The Watson supercomputer that beat past Jeopardy champions was made up of 90 IBM Power 750 Express servers powered by eight-core processors -- four in each machine for a total of 32 processors per machine. The servers were virtualized using a kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) implementation, creating a server cluster with a total processing capacity of 80 teraflops. A teraflop is one trillion operations per second.

The iteration of Watson being used by Cedars-Sinai, which will reside on WellPoint's campus and can be accessed remotely over a WAN, is vastly smaller, according to Gold.

IBM's Watson supercomputer as it was used for the game show Jeopardy!. The iteration of Watson being used by Cedars-Sinai will be much smaller, but it will have the same capability to ingest and analyze data from disparate systems, both structured and unstructured "The Jeopardy! configuration was done with a specific purpose in mind. It was an in-memory application designed to respond to a question in three seconds," Gold said. "It had 2880 cores and 15 terabytes of memory. Most situations won't dictate that level of response time. For a doctor, if the response is in six seconds or 10 seconds ... obviously the implications for the response are more important than the turnaround time."

Working with speech and imaging recognition software provider Nuance Communications, IBM said the supercomputer can assist healthcare professionals in culling through gigabytes or terabytes of patient healthcare information to determine how to best treat specific illnesses.

For example, Watson's analytics technology, used with Nuance's voice and clinical language understanding software, could help a physician consider all related texts, reference materials, prior cases, and latest knowledge in journals and medical literature when treating an illness. The analysis could quickly help physicians determine the best options for diagnosis and treatment.

Watson will likely be good at helping physicians prescribe treatments that will have the best outcome, Gold said. For example, between the first and second prescribed treatments of a cancer patient, 50% of the time the prescribed medication changes for the second treatment based on the patient's reaction to the initial treatment, Gold said. Watson may be able to better prescribe initial treatments based on past patient data and information specific to the patient being treated.

"The goal is to assist physicians in evaluating evidence-based treatment options that can be delivered to the physician in a matter of seconds for assessment," he said.

China to try another dissident for "subversive" online essays (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China will try a veteran dissident, Chen Xi, on charges of "inciting subversion" for pro-democracy essays he published online, his wife said on Sunday, days after another dissident was jailed for nine years on similar charges.

Chen, a human rights campaigner in Guiyang city in Guizhou, southwest China, was arrested last month and will be tried for "inciting subversion of state power," a charge often used against critics of the ruling Communist Party, said his wife Zhang Qunxuan.

"They accused him because of 36 essays he published at home and overseas," Zhang told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"I don't know exactly what the charges are, because the court and prosecutors wouldn't show me the indictment. They said there are rules against showing that to family members," she said, adding that one of Chen's lawyers told her about the subversion accusations.

Chen, 57, is sure to maintain that he is innocent, but is certain to be found guilty and jailed by China's party-controlled judiciary, Zhang said.

"He's definitely going to fight the charges," she said, citing her discussions with his defense lawyers. She was told of the trial date on Friday, she added.

"But it looks certain that he'll be convicted. That's what courts always decide."

Chen was arrested last month after being released from a week-long detention triggered by his campaigning for independent candidates seeking to win places on China's party-controlled People's Congress assemblies, said Zhang.

Police confiscated his computer, she added.

"Then on November 29, the police called him and said he could come and get his computer," she said. "Instead, they lured him to the public security bureau and arrested him."

Calls to the Guiyang People's Intermediate Court were not answered on Sunday, a rest day in China,. Another human rights activist, Lu Yongxiang, told Reuters he also knew of the trial on Monday through Chen Xi's friends and supporters.

The trial will come after a court in Sichuan province, also in southwest China, convicted rights advocate Chen Wei and sentenced him to nine years in jail after a brief trial on Friday -- the stiffest punishment in a crackdown on dissent this year.

Chen in a common family name in China, and the two men are not related.

Chen Wei's wife, Wang Xiaoyan, and lawyers said he was jailed as punishment for essays that he had published on overseas Chinese websites.

China uses a "firewall" of Internet filters and blocks to prevent citizens from reading websites abroad that are deemed to be politically unacceptable or socially unsound.

Chen Wei's sentence was the third-longest term ever handed down for inciting subversion after Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo, who has been serving an 11-year sentence since 2009, and Liu Xianbin, who was jailed for 10 years in March this year.

Earlier this year, Chinese police held hundreds of dissidents, rights activists and protest organizers in a crackdown on dissent this year, when the ruling Communist Party sought to prevent potential protests inspired by anti-authoritarian uprisings across the Arab world.

Many of those detained have been released but remain under police watch. But officials appeared determined to "make an example" of Chen, said Huang Qi, a human rights advocate in Chen's home Sichuan province and a long-time friend of his.

Chen Xi, who faces trial on Monday, is a former soldier and factory worker who was jailed for three years for his support for the 1989 pro-democracy protests across China that ended after troops crushed demonstrations, said his wife.

He was again jailed in 1996, but since his release in 2005 has been an organizer of a citizens' human rights forum in Guiyang.

Microsoft Is Way Overdue In Leaving CES Keynote ? More Room For Companies That Ship

Microsoft_KeynoteThe topic around the olives and cheese plate last week at an extended family Christmas gathering was, interestingly enough, Microsoft distancing itself from CES. My family, not ordinarily given to tech gossip, was alarmed, thinking that perhaps there was a grand re-ordering of things that they should know about. It's a remarkably straightforward move, far from the conspiracy theories the last few days have spawned, but when you're dealing with bruisers like Microsoft and CES, everything is swathed in diplomacy as would be ostensibly amicable divorce proceedings. But Microsoft's grievances are legitimate and the move is a smart one. "Our product news milestones generally don't align with the show's January timing." How true that is, and as others have pointed out, their product news generally didn't align with products, either. And they're aware that their news is propagating in a completely different way than it used to.

Iraq vice president says bombs were inside job

Updated December 24, 2011 22:07:25

Iraq's vice president Tariq al-Hashemi has alleged that a series of bombings which killed scores of people in Baghdad on Thursday were organised from within the Iraqi government.

Mr Hashemi, a Sunni Muslim, is embroiled in a deep political row with the Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has issued an arrest warrant against him.

The vice president says only government involvement could explain why the bombers were able to plant so many explosives unhindered.

"What happened yesterday, I'm sure, that body inside the government manipulated all these explosives and the damages," he told BBC Persian television.

"Nobody else could be qualified for that at all. And it's not the first time. This style of terrorist attack, it's well beyond even Al Qaeda to do it."

The BBC website quoted him as saying: "After Americans decided to pull out, time comes for him, he felt himself free to try to get rid of his political rivals and opponents and critics - this is why he started with me, in due course he will continue with others."

Mr Hashemi also says the United States should shoulder some of the blame, because of the style of management left in place after the withdrawal of the last of its troops.

"We don't have in fact a modern, transparent state of law, democratic country," he said.

"What we do have, unfortunately, is sectarian oriented, non-independent judicial system.

"We do have in fact a model which make us and the Americans not proud of what we have achieved."

Mr Maliki sought Mr Hashemi's arrest on terrorism charges this week.

After Friday prayers, with Sunni imams warning Mr Maliki was seeking to foment sectarian divisions, protesters turned out on the streets of Sunni-dominated Samarra, Ramadi, Baiji and Qaim, many waving banners in support of Mr Hashemi and criticising the government.

The crisis could scuttle a power-sharing agreement that splits posts among Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish leaders just days after the last American troops withdrew nearly nine years after the invasion to oust Saddam Hussein.

"What's happening in Iraq is settling political scores," Iyad Allawi, Mr Maliki's predecessor and head of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, told al-Arabiya television.

An emergency session in parliament among leaders of political blocs to debate the crisis was cancelled on Friday.

Spectacular Photos: Astronaut Sees Dazzling Comet From Space Station (SPACE.com)

An astronaut living in space has captured an unprecedented view of a comet from orbit in a jaw-dropping set of photos taken over a nighttime Earth.

The amazing images show comet Lovejoy, which survived a trip through the sun's atmosphere last week. They were snapped by veteran NASA astronaut Daniel Burbank, who is currently commander of the International Space Station.

?

And even for a seasoned spaceflyer, the sight was amazing to behold.

It was "the most amazing thing I've ever seen in space," Burbank said in a NASA video. "And that's saying an awful lot because every day is filled with amazing things."

Burbank took about 100 photographs of comet Lovejoy as it rose above Earth at night on Wednesday (Dec. 21). At the time, the space station was sailing 240 miles (386 kilometers) above Tasmania, Burbank said. Then the long, bright tail of the comet began rising up from the Earth's horizon.

"I had no idea what it was; it was a long green glowing arc," Burbank said in the video, which was recorded in an interview with WDIV-TV in Detroit. "It turns out that it ended up being a comet." [Astronaut's amazing comet photos and video]

Burbank is in the middle of a six-month mission to the International Space Station. He leads a three-man crew (two Russian cosmonauts round out the team) and is preparing to welcome three more astronauts on Friday (Dec. 23). A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying the new crewmembers launched on Wednesday.

Comet Lovejoy was discovered on Nov. 27 by Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy. The comet was estimated to be about 660 feet (200 meters) wide, larger than two football fields, when it was first seen.

The comet was quickly identified as a so-called Kreutz comet, a comet on a path that flies extremely close to the sun. Then, on Dec. 15, comet Lovejoy plunged into the sun's outer atmosphere.

The comet zoomed within 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) of the sun's surface, and many astronomers predicted it would not survive such a close solar encounter. But comet Lovejoy defied the odds and re-emerged on the other side of the sun. The event stunned astronomers and was captured by several sun-watching observatories in space.

The swing near the sun did rip comet Lovejoy's tail clean off, but over the last week the comet has grown a new tail of gas blown back by the solar wind.

"When it disappeared behind the sun, I think astronomers thought it would not appear again, it would probably burn up," Burbank said. "But it's probably the most spectacular thing that you can imagine."

UN: Philippine flood destruction like tsunami (AP)

ILIGAN, Philippines ? Two southern Philippine cities devastated by flash floods that killed more than 1,000 people look like they have been hit by a tsunami, a United Nations official said Thursday as he appealed for $28 million in aid to help half a million people affected by the disaster.

U.N. humanitarian coordinator Soe Nyunt-U also voiced concern about the possibility of disease outbreaks among the thousands living in evacuation centers after their houses were washed away last Friday when a tropical storm unleashed flash floods.

"It was as if the cities were hit by an inland tsunami," Nyunt-U told reporters in Manila. "Entire areas were completely flattened. Only a few sturdy buildings remain standing, and these had sustained a lot of damage."

"Debris from houses, buildings and other structures that had been destroyed by the storm was all swept out to the sea, leaving huge areas devoid of all traces of habitation," he said.

Nyunt-U said he was hopeful donors and foreign governments will respond to the appeal despite the global economic crisis. An appeal launched following a 2009 typhoon that killed about 500 people in Manila collected only half the funds needed.

"It's the Christmas season and the willingness of the international community is high," he said, adding that "no country can stand alone."

About 45,000 displaced are inside evacuation centers, most of them in worst-hit Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities in the southern Mindanao region. Another 266,000 are being assisted outside temporary shelters. Nearly 30,000 houses were destroyed and damaged. The two cities are home to nearly a million people.

Local authorities and grieving relatives were moving ahead with dozens of burials each day, after a handful of funeral parlors complained they were overwhelmed and could no longer accept bodies, which were still being retrieved from the sea or mud almost a week after the disaster struck.

Aid workers rushed in relief supplies, but a lack of running water was a major concern.

"We must improve this situation at the soonest possible time to avoid disease outbreaks that will further compound the hardships of the people already weakened by hunger and grief from loss of family and friends," Nyunt-U said.

He mentioned a cholera type virus that may occur due to problems stemming from congestion in the evacuation centers, where poor sanitation and hygiene posed a health risk.

Taylor's "National Velvet" script sells for $170,500 (omg!)

Christie's auctioneer Andrea Fiuczynski conducts an auction of Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry, clothing, art and memorabilia, near an image of the late actress at Christie's auction house in New York, December 14, 2011. REUTERS/Carlo Allegri

(Reuters) - Elizabeth Taylor's script for the movie "National Velvet" -- which made her a star at age 12 -- sold for more than 50 times its estimate on Friday as the New York auction of the actress's jewels, clothes, art and memorabilia neared its close.

Christie's auctioneers said the 1944 "National Velvet" script, bound in lilac leather, was sold to a private U.S. buyer for $170,500 on Friday. It's pre-sale estimate was $2,000 - $3,000.

A drawing of lips inscribed to Taylor by Andy Warhol sold for $242,500, and was among the priciest items bought on the fourth day of the auction.

Friday's total sales were $4.4 million, including commission, taking the auction sales so far this week to $154.2 million. An online-only sale of some 1,000 lower-priced items from Taylor's estate continues through Saturday.

Christie's chairman Marc Porter said the response to the auction so far had been "nothing short of overwhelming with multiple bidders competing for every lot."

Taylor, regarded as one of the last great Hollywood legends, died of congestive heart failure in March at age 79.

Her fabled collection of ruby, diamond and emerald jewelry -- many of them gifts from two-time husband Richard Burton -- attracted the biggest interest, selling for a total of $116 million earlier this week.
