Your Animals and Glaucoma | ArticlePDQ.com

Glaucoma is increased pressure within a person?s eye. Tissues inside the eye create a clear water (?aqueous humor?) that keeps the eye?s condition and feeds the tissues inside the eye. The balance of liquid production and drainage is responsible for maintaining normal stress within the eye. In glaucoma, the drain becomes blocked, but the eye proceed generating liquid, causing increase eye force, which can actually can cause the eye to enlarge and stretch, in addition to blinding the eye. Glaucoma is not limited by humans ? your pets can be affected by it, too!Glaucoma is classified as either primary or secondary in animals. Key Glaucoma is an inherited problem, developing breeds which range from American Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds to Arctic Circle breeds (Huskies, Elkhounds, and so on), and Chow Chows, Shar Peis, Labrador Retrievers. Touhg it?s uncommon in cats, it can happen and is generally secondary to chronic uveitis. Major Glaucoma usually begins in one single eye, however in many animals, both eyes are eventually involved by it, leading to complete blindness. When other eye conditions trigger lowered liquid discharge secondary Glaucoma occurs. Common factors behind secondary glaucoma are irritation in the eye (uveitis), high level cataracts, eye cancer and serious retinal detachment.Determining if your pet has primary or secondary glaucoma is essential, as the prognosis and treatment differ for every type. (Many pet insurance policies protect the checks and authorities needed seriously to consider your pet, therefore consult your provider.) Veterinary ophthalmologists use slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, and gonioscopy to determine the cause and type of glaucoma in your pet. Gonioscopy will help see how susceptible your pet?s outstanding visual eye is to develop glaucoma when primary glaucoma is suspected. This test involves putting a particular lens on the attention, enabling assessment of the drainage; it is usually performed under sedation or anesthesia.Glaucoma can affect the eye( s) of your pet( s) in the subsequent ways:oVision Loss ? Pressure injury to the optic nerve and reduced blood flow to the retina, the ?film in the camera,? results in loss of vision. However, if the attention pressure remains uncontrolled, the retina degenerates and vision is completely lost. Permanent blindness can happen within several hours if the force is quite high and the glaucoma develops rapidly;oUnfortunately, the first attention to build up primary glaucoma in dogs is often already blind by the time the infection is known. Because of this, therapy in these cases is directed at relieving vexation in the blind eye and preventing or slowing glaucoma development in another eye. Gonioscopy of the rest of the visual vision helps determine how to treat this eye;oPain ? Increased intraocular pressure is painful. Dogs, cats (and also human) have normal intraocular pressures between 10-20 mmHg. Glaucoma usually results in difficulties 45-65 mmHg in dogs and cats, that will be considerably greater than in individuals with glaucoma, making it a lot more painful for your pet. The pain remains in the form of a constant headache or migraine. This disquiet can result in lethargy, frustration, or decreased appetite, but is often unapparent to the owner, thus be observant! The only way to establish if your furry friend is suffering from glaucoma is to have the intraocular pressures calculated by a veterinarian. Indicators of glaucoma may include a red or bloodshot eye and/or cloudy cornea. Vision loss is also characteristic of glaucoma. However, loss of vision in one single eye is frequently maybe not apparent since animals cover with their remaining eye. In the course of time, the increased pressure will cause the attention to extend and become increased. Regrettably, eyes usually are completely impaired by the time they become enlarged. If your pet has lost one eye to principal glaucoma and the other eye is prone to developing glaucoma: The normal timeframe for another attack to happen in the remaining eye is 8 months; protective medical treatment for the ?good? eye delays the onset of glaucoma by very nearly 23 months.Since glaucoma occurs because fluid isn?t emptying from the eye quickly enough, the reasonable therapy is to open up the drain, however, opening ? and keeping open ? the drain is difficult. Consequently, several glaucoma treatments are also aimed at decreasing fluid production by the eye.Medical Therapy ? While there are numerous eye drops and tablets that aid decrease fluid production or increase fluid discharge from your pet?s eye, they rarely handle glaucoma long-term. Therefore, they are used primarily to simply help prevent/delay glaucoma?s beginning in the remaining visible eye and as temporary therapy until surgery can be carried out in the damaged eye.Surgical Therapy ? The kind of surgical procedures available for glaucoma is determined by whether the eye still has the potential for vision. For visible eyes, intraocular pressure could be reduced by doing a cycloablation procedure and a drainage implant procedure. For forever blind eyes, the eye could be eliminated with the choice of putting a clean prosthetic ball implant in the eye socket just before skin closure, an implant placed inside the eye giving your pet a partially artificial eye, or an injection into the eye that kills the fluid-producing cells and decreases the pressure. The best treatment for your pet depends on the type of glaucoma, the potential for vision, and your choice for the cosmetic appearance of your pet?s experience. The key to using the most effective possibility of preserving vision is early detection and regular ophthalmic examinations.

Ann Romney, Christie on deck at GOP convention

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republicans eagerly looked to showcase Mitt Romney as a man who understands everyday Americans and a leader who can fix the economy, with GOP National Convention speeches Tuesday by the woman who knows him best and tough-talking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

But with New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast waiting fearfully to see where a massive storm makes landfall, politics became an awkward enterprise and no one knows what sort of party the GOP gathering will turn out to be.

After a one-day weather delay, the convention proceeds according to its latest script: delivering Romney the presidential nomination he fought years to achieve, calling the party to unify around him and setting the stage for the final stretch of the hotly contested campaign to unseat President Barack Obama.

Christie, who delivers Tuesday's keynote address, said that for those Americans who aren't yet sold on Romney, "you start turning it around tonight."

In a round of morning talk-show appearances, Christie said Ann Romney would humanize her husband for the nation, and that his own speech would make the case for GOP economic policies and Romney as the fixer. But ultimately, Christie said, it will up to Romney himself "to let the American people see who he is."

Meeting with Michigan delegates, Christie insisted that an effective president trumps likeability.

"We need somebody who cares more about getting the job done than they care about being temporarily popular with any particular segment of our country," Christie said.

Christie has his own fan club.

"I just love him," said Sandy Barber, a delegate from rural northwest Ohio. "He's plain-talking. He's himself. He's someone who lets his personality come through."

Romney, Barber allowed, "is a different kind of personality. His personality exudes leadership."

Eager to counter Romney's economic pitch to middle-class voters, a super PAC supporting Obama unveiled an ad featuring a small business owner who criticized the candidate's record on job growth as Massachusetts governor.

The Romneys boarded a plane bound for Tampa, but it was a mystery whether the GOP candidate would attend the convention before his big address Thursday night. Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan and his family, too, headed for Florida. Ryan delivers his speech Wednesday night.

Already in Tampa: a slew of GOP presidential also-rans: Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain posed for a photo after running into each other at the convention center, Cain joking that the caption could be: "We ain't mad. We support Mitt and Ryan." Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were on hand too, both with speaking slots.

The high campaign season opens with Romney and Obama about even in the last of the pre-convention polls, with each candidate possessing distinct and important advantages. The Democrat is the more likable or empathetic leader; the Republican is more highly regarded as the candidate who can restore the economy, the top issue for voters.

Ann Romney's convention speech was designed to speak to that divide. It was an important part of the GOP's effort to flesh out her husband and present him to the nation as more than a successful businessman and the former Republican governor of a Democratic state, Massachusetts.

She went about the business of humanizing the Romney family with a taped appearance on "CBS This Morning" in which she talked about the pain of a miscarriage, telling details about the experience that were news even to her husband. The Romneys have five sons.

Isaac, the intensifying tropical storm bordering on a hurricane, skirted Tampa, a big relief for convention organizers worried about the safety of the host city and GOP delegates. But they remain saddled with the question of how to proceed with a political festival ? one devoted both to scoring points against Obama and firing up excitement for Romney ? under the shadow of a dangerous storm crawling toward the Gulf Coast.

Tampa awoke to sunny skies Tuesday while convention planners monitored weather reports for the storm's impact on the Gulf Coast some seven years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the region.

In a reminder of both the storm and the presidency, Obama warned residents of the Gulf Coast to heed warnings from local officials and follow their directions as the storm approached. He delivered brief remarks from the White House.

Organizers essentially cut Monday from the schedule, calling the convention to order just long enough to recess it, and shoehorned their four-day showcase into the remaining three days. But even that was subject to change, depending on Isaac's whims.

Republicans plainly had more at stake in their convention week ? Democrats meet next week in Charlotte, N.C. ? but the Obama campaign also had to recalibrate its tactics as Gulf residents fled their homes or hunkered down. Vice President Joe Biden was called off a Romney-bashing trip to Florida.

That's not to say partisanship has subsided with Isaac's gathering strength. Hardly.

Obama headed to Iowa on Tuesday as the first stop on a campaign trip in which he will make a personal appeal to college voters in three university towns: Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Awaiting the president in Iowa: An article in the Des Moines Register in which 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole called Romney and Ryan a "dream ticket."

The two "have a program to turn the economy around that is the most thoughtful and comprehensive I have seen in my lifetime, and I have seen a lot," wrote the 89-year-old Dole.

On Twitter Monday night, Obama circulated a quotation from Women's Health Magazine suggesting that Republicans would take away women's right to contraception, which the Romney campaign denies. "Crazy as it sounds, the fight to limit or even ban birth control is a key issue in the upcoming presidential election," it said.

In a sign of just how stage-managed these conventions have become, the never-dull Christie did something he rarely does before a speech ? wrote down a full text ? as he prepared to deliver the keynote address Tuesday night. "They want you to work off a full text and that's fine," he told MSNBC. "I think my challenge up there is gonna be to be natural and be myself."

An AP-GfK poll of registered voters conducted from Aug. 16-20 found Obama leading Romney 50 percent to 44 percent among women. That represented a narrowing of the gap by Romney since a survey in May, when the president led 54-39 among female voters.

Romney trailed badly among another key group. A Gallup poll taken between July 30 and Aug. 1 found Obama winning 60 percent support among Hispanic voters, and the Republican at 27 percent, little different from 64-29 earlier in the year.

Among seniors, the group most affected by a Medicare debate that has become central to the campaign, Romney led Obama by a margin of 52 percent to 42 percent in the recent AP-GfK poll. That was compared with 53-40 in May.

Revamped Dodgers can't handle Marlins

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:01 p.m. ET Aug. 26, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton appears to have no problem with the dimensions of Dodger Stadium, which isn't exactly a home run haven.

The power-hitting right fielder made Chavez Ravine his personal launching pad this weekend, homering for the third straight game as the Miami Marlins beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 on Sunday.

Stanton drove a first-pitch fastball from Aaron Harang over the center-field wall in the fourth inning for his 29th homer, tying it at 1.

It was his eighth homer during the Marlins' 5-6 road trip. The previous club record for homers on a single trip was six by Miguel Cabrera (10 games), Mike Lowell (12 games) and Preston Wilson (13 games).

"He's got so much power, it's ridiculous," winning pitcher Mark Buehrle said. "Every time he hits the ball, it has a chance of going out. I mean, he has 29 home runs right now - and he's missed a month and a half. So it's kind of scary when you think about what he could have done if he was healthy all year."

The 22-year-old Stanton, who was born in nearby Panorama City and played his high school ball in Sherman Oaks, had 22 homers as a rookie in 2010 and 34 last season. He is batting .326 over his last 12 games with 14 RBIs, but it's those 15 strikeouts during that stretch that have kept him humble.

"I've put some good swings on mistakes that were out over the plate," Stanton said. "But the way I've been making outs, I don't think that I'm on any kind of a roll. I don't set goals for myself. I just try to be the best I can be, and then all the numbers will come. But don't be barking off, `I'm going to do this or that."'

Rob Brantly gave Miami the lead for good with his first major league homer, and the Marlins also got long balls from Jose Reyes and Carlos Lee.

Buehrle (12-11) won his third straight start, allowing a run and six hits in 5 2-3 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth by retiring Hanley Ramirez on a popup and Andre Ethier on a grounder with the Marlins holding a 3-1 lead.

Brantly had put the Marlins ahead in the top half with a two-run shot.

"It seems that every time we've scored a run or two, I go out there and give back at least one. So that was a big moment in the game," Buehrle said. "I got in a bunch of jams today that I usually don't pitch out of.

"I was joking around with somebody and saying, `Usually, when a guy gets on third base with less than two outs, just let him score and start over fresh,' because a lot of times the other team puts the ball in play and scores a run. But my job is to battle and make pitches when I need to," Buehrle said.

Ethier singled home a run in the seventh, but was called out for interference moments later after making incidental contact with Lee at first base on a popup by Luis Cruz that was dropped by catcher Brantly just inside the first base line. Cruz, sent back to the plate on the dead ball following a lengthy discussion among the umpires, flied out to end the inning.

The Marlins made it 4-2 in the eighth when Ramirez misplayed Bryan Petersen's two-out grounder to shortstop with the bases loaded for an error. Steve Cishek retired new Dodgers slugger Adrian Gonzalez with the bases loaded to end the eighth, then pitched a hitless ninth for his 11th save in 14 chances.

Reyes and Lee had homered back-to-back against rookie Shawn Tolleson in the top of the ninth.

Harang (9-8) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings. The homers by Stanton and Brantly increased the total allowed this season by the right-hander to 14. He gave up an average of 24.9 home runs over the previous eight seasons - including 35 in 2008 with Cincinnati.

"Early on I was able to locate my fastball and I felt like I was able to mix up a lot of my pitches," Harang said. "The pitch to Brantly was supposed to be a backdoor cutter, that stayed out over the middle. He's another young, aggressive hitter who swung at the first pitch."

Ethier was called out on strikes by Tony Randazzo in the first after hitting safely in each of his previous 10 plate appearances, and ended up tied with Ed Konetchy for the franchise record for consecutive at-bats with a hit. Konetchy did it in 1919.

Ethier was in an 0-for-18 drought before starting his string of hits. Only one player since 1952 has had hits in 11 consecutive at-bats - Bernie Williams in 2002 with the Yankees. The major league record is 12, by Johnny Kling (1902 Cubs), Pinky Higgins (1938 Red Sox) and Walt Dropo (1952 Tigers).

NOTES: Brantly hit 11 home runs in 980 at-bats during his 262-game minor league career. The Marlins obtained him in a trade with Detroit on July 23. ... The Dodgers announced before the game that Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully will be back behind the microphone next season, his 64th with the club. ... Ramirez, acquired by the Dodgers in a trade with the Marlins on July 25 for RHP Nathan Eovaldi, was 1 for 12 with six strikeouts in the series. The only hit was a two-run homer off Eovaldi on Friday night in an 11-4 Dodgers victory.

(AP) ? Lance Armstrong was feeling just fine even after being beaten by a lanky teenager in a grueling 36-mile mountain bike race.

Better than fine, even. He's more at ease now than he has been in a decade.

In his first interview since the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency disciplined Armstrong with a lifetime ban from professional cycling and vacated his seven Tour de France titles, he said, "Nobody needs to cry for me. I'm going to be great."

Armstrong couldn't catch Keegan Swirbul at the Power of Four bike race Saturday, finishing nearly five minutes behind the hard-charging kid.

"It's cool to get your butt kicked by a 16-year-old when you know he has a bright future," Armstrong said, smiling.

For a few hours, Armstrong was back in his element ? on a bike and in a race.

No controversies weighing him down, either.

The escape into the mountains around Aspen was almost refreshing. He took the time to enjoy a bright, blue day and soak in the scenery.

As for what lies ahead, Armstrong wasn't thinking that far ? only toward lunch. Armstrong chatted for a few minutes before saying, "OK, I'm going to go eat a cheeseburger."

Before leaving, though, he posed for pictures with the throng of fans that gathered at the base of a ski lift to watch the racers finish.

Asked if there was anything he would to say to his fans, the ones who've supported him through the controversy, he said: "I think people understand that we've got a lot of stuff to do going forward. That's what I'm focused on and I think people are supportive of that. It's great to be out here."

Decked out in black and gold and sporting a Livestrong emblem on his jersey, Armstrong tinkered with his bike and gave a kiss to girlfriend Anna Hansen before pedaling off. Hansen was waiting at the finish, too.

So were plenty of other members of the Armstrong entourage.

His busy weekend was supposed to include a trail marathon Sunday. But he told The Associated Press two hours later he was going to skip the race.

This competition simply took that much out of him. With good reason, given all the climbing the cyclists had to do.

And while Armstrong may be banned from cycling, it certainly hasn't diminished his passion for competition.

Only now, these weekend races may have to suffice.

"It's not so much about racing anymore for me," Armstrong said. "For me, it's more about staying fit and coming out here and enjoying one of the most beautiful parts of the world, on a beautiful day, on a very hard course. Some may say you're a little sick to spend your free time doing stuff like this. I had a good time."

So did Swirbul ? beating his idol was the highlight of his burgeoning career.

Or so he thought. Then came this: Armstrong saying Swirbul was a rider to keep an eye on down the road. Swirbul beamed as he stood next to Armstrong.

Swirbul hardly had the heart to tell Armstrong that he won with only one gear ? the rest going out early in the race.

"I'm so psyched right now," said Swirbul, who turns 17 on Sept. 2. "I wanted to win this race so bad."

How come?

"To beat the 7-time Tour champ," he said, grinning.

To riders such as Swirbul, Armstrong will always be champion of those Tour de France titles, no matter what rulings are made.

"It's just a bunch of bureaucrats causing trouble," said Max Taam, who trains with Armstrong and finished third Saturday. "I think he's just happy to move on and be out on his bike."

Armstrong, who retired a year ago and turns 41 next month, said Thursday he would no longer challenge USADA and declined to exercise his last option by entering arbitration. He denied again that he took banned substances in his career, calling USADA's investigation a "witch hunt" without any physical evidence.

USADA said its evidence came from more than a dozen witnesses "who agreed to testify and provide evidence about their firsthand experience and/or knowledge of the doping activity of those involved in the USPS conspiracy," a reference to Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service cycling team.

The unidentified witnesses said they knew or had been told by Armstrong himself that he had "used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone" from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and Human Growth Hormone through 1996, USADA said. Armstrong also allegedly handed out doping products and encouraged banned methods ? and used "blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions" during his 2009 comeback race on the Tour de France.

USADA chief executive Travis Tygart described the investigation as a battle against a "win-at-all-cost culture," adding that the International Cycling Union was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it."

Fans defended Armstrong on Twitter, insisting his work with Livestrong trumps what he accomplished on a bike. His success helped sell millions of "Livestrong" yellow plastic bracelets as he promoted cancer awareness and research. He's raised nearly $500 million since the Lance Armstrong Foundation started in 1997.

On Friday alone, the foundation said it received 400 donations that totaled around $75,000.

There were plenty of fans wearing Livestrong hats and shirts in the crowd, cheering when he finished.

"I'm focused on the future. I've got five great kids, a great lady in my life, a wonderful foundation that's completely unaffected by any noise out there, and we're going to continue to do our job," Armstrong said. "The people like the people who are standing around here or on the course, they voiced their opinion in the last 48 hours and are going to support us."

As for the sport?

"There are a lot of good young guys. A lot of good young guys," Armstrong said. "Cycling is going to be fine."

Woman of South Africa 1935

The Woman of South Africa 1935 publication is a historical, educational and industrial encyclopedia and social directory of the Woman of the Sub Continent. Search the over 1700 biographies of these prominent women and find out about their social standing. This collection provides details on their maiden name, whom they married, where they were educated, what societies or clubs they belonged to as well as their hobbies and there home address. Search either from our main search page or browse through the biographies one by one.

Editorial Note extracted from the publication

As perusal of ??Women of South Africa? will show, the names of one or two prominent women do not appear in its pages, and for these omissions the indulgence of the reader is asked, owing to the obvious difficulty of compiling a work of this description which shall be complete in every detail.
It is a pleasant duty to place on record the cordial co-operation afforded the movement by Her Excellency Viscountess Gladstone (to whom the work is inscribed), to the distinguished patrons whose names appear elsewhere in the volume and to the Mayoresses and other ladies who have helped to make ? Women of South Africa? a publication of national standing and world-wide interest, and one which will be a lasting memorial of the good work accomplished in public and private life by the women of our country.
A number of articles written be prominent women will be found in alphabetical order at the end of the book, and these, penned as they are by competent authorities, will, it is hoped, give a fair insight into the aims and objects of some of the many institutions in which our women are interesting themselves.
Thanks are due to Miss Marian Maxwell, of Johannesburg, for the photograph of Viscountess Gladstone, which appears as a frontispiece, and for other photographs reproduced in this volume, also to Messrs. Akkersdyk (Cape Town) ; Angus (Middlebrook Studio, Kimberley) ; Carrick Bros. (King William?s Town) ; Deale (Bloemfontein) ; A. L. Gilham (Pretoria) ; Hepburn & Jeans (Grahamstown) ; H. Yet needed most, I bring

The words of my book nothing, the drift of it everything;
A book separate, not link?d with the rest nor felt by the intellect.
But you, ye untold latencies, will thrill to every page
by Walt Whitman

Preface

A few years ago the production of a volume dealing solely from cover to cover with biographical matter concerning women would have been deemed an unnecessary labour and one in which small interest would be evinced. Nowadays. however, with the ever-increasing scope afforded the energies of womenkind; woman is taking her full share in the affairs of nations. In no little degree have the women of South Africa contributed towards the consummation of Union and the present state of prosperity and amity existing throughout the sub-continent.
The affairs of South Africa have loomed large in the eyes of the world for rather more than a decade, and it is only fitting that the mothers, wives and daughters of the South African Nation should have at least the tardy and wholly insufficient recognition given by these pages.
Owing to the fact that the photos have been reproduced on as large a scale aas possible, it has not been found practicable to print the biographies in strict alphabetical order and for this reason an Index has been added to the volume, and this will afford ready reference to its contents.
The presentation of a copy of ? Women of South Africa? to Her Gracious Majesty Queen Mary will in every way enhance the value of the publication, which will without doubt, be of especial interest to Her Majesty, to whom many of the ladies whose photographs and biographies appear have been presented,? either at the English Court or during the visit of ?Their Majesties the King and Queen (then T.R.H. the Duke and Duchess of York) to these shores in 1901.

Amazon to hold press event on Sept. 6 (Hello, new Kindle?)

9 hrs.

Amazon is holding a press event on Sept. 6, in Santa Monica, Calif., and that probably means exactly what you think it means: That a new Kindle ??or two, or three ??is on the way.

Analysts have suggested that several?new Kindle models, including a 7-inch upgrade that people have dubbed "Kindle Fire 2," could be on the way.

Richard Shim,?an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch,?says?that his sources claim that there would be three flavors of?Kindle 2?hitting production lines this fall,?as CNET's Brooke Crothers points out???one with no camera, one with a camera, and one with a camera and 4G cellular?connectivity.

There could also be an 8.9-inch version of the tablet at the very end of the year, which would compete more?directly with the current?iPad, he added.

This speculation is based on?orders placed for components, so things could certainly change. But given the timing, we suspect that we'll be seeing at least one shiny new Kindle next month.

In addition to those LCD-screen touch?tablets, Amazon has been rumored to be working on a glowing-screen version of its popular e-ink Kindle. It was expected sooner, as Barnes & Noble released its own light-up Nook in July.

All that, and maybe Amazon will even reveal?its own?branded smartphone, too. (But ...?probably not.)

But no matter what we think will happen, we'll be in Santa Monica on Sept. 6 for Amazon's announcement.

In South Carolina, traffic tickets might cost more than the fine | South ...

If you receive a traffic citation in South Carolina or throughout the United States, be prepared to watch your car insurance payments rise.

Insurance companies generally place a surcharge on car insurance premiums at the time of their renewal if the driver has gotten a ticket during the year. The amount of that surcharge and the amount of time for which it will be assessed depends both on the driver's insurance company and state of residence, as state laws differ.

The amount of the surcharge also depends on the seriousness of the violation as some states do not allow a surcharge for minor infractions. It isn't uncommon for the surcharge to last three years unless state laws require a different length of time. Frequently, the surcharge will decrease after the first year if the driver receives no additional citations.

Shedding the surcharge isn't easy. It can't be done, for instance, by changing insurance carriers. A policy with a different company also will carry a surcharge until the time allowed by state law for the extra fee expires.

Aside from the surcharge issue, that infraction also could keep a company from accepting a new policy holder. One insurance professional said some insurance companies will look at driving records for beyond the typical three-year surcharge period, especially if the violation is a major one.

Still, once the surcharges expire, rates will go down, and there are other ways to save on car insurance, even with a spotty driving history. They include:

  • Asking for a discount for driving low miles each year.
  • Performing a thorough cost comparison among auto insurance carriers, with them taking the driving record into account.
  • Taking a defensive-driving class, which can reduce points on a license and thereby lessen insurance costs.
  • Asking the insurer if it offers discounts for having a car with an anti-theft device or for owning a hybrid or electric car.

By obeying traffic laws, and going to traffic court to fight unjust citations, drivers can save themselves money and the legal troubles that traffic citations might bring.

Colorado Springs Business Journal ? Blog Archive ? Colorado ...

Colorado exported 18 percent more agricultural goods in the first six months of this year than it did in the first half of 2011.

Agricultural exports make up a significant portion of the state?s overall exports, according to a release from the state. And through the first two quarters of this year, Colorado has exported more than $710 million worth of goods.

Colorado Agricultural Commissioner John Salazar said there are increasing export opportunities as the state?s goods begin to make their ways into international markets. Exports to Canada and Mexico increased in 2012, but exports to Japan increased by 48 percent to $99.6 million. Exports to Russia increased by 83 percent to $28.7 million.

Colorado?s biggest agriculture exports include meat, dairy, vegetables and wheat.

?Colorado agriculture is the fabric of this state, with locally grown products sold from our local farmers markets to markets abroad,? Salazar said in a statement. ?We are enthused about the continued growth of Colorado?s agricultural exports to international markets, which contribute to Colorado?s economic vitality.?

Creamy Zucchini Lasagna - FRUGAL FITNESS

Contributed By Marissa Bognanno, Professional Chef and Zumba Instructor, and Author of The Boot BlogI took Brittany to my fruit and vegetable guy today - you know,?Point Fruit?- and I started loading the bags up. She kept saying, ?That?s enough, right? Oh, another peach? We don?t need that much, I don?t think.? Little did she know that we were at the Point Fruit, and not Whole Foods produce department. I dumped my bags of fresh zucchini, peaches, basil, melon, little yellow plums, green apples and lemons on the counter. The young boy weighed it all and handed me my receipt. ?1.20?per favore.? In that moment the owner, who calls me?prof,?yelled from outside,

?Hey! How much are you charging the prof???

?1.20,? said the boy.

?No, the prof pays 1 euro!? he yelled back.?

The boy shrugged, took my euro and handed me the bags with a smile.?

We walked home, Britt shking her head and repeating, ?1 euro? Wow. 1 euro.?

A note about lasagna in Italy:?forget about the traditional Italian-American version with the thick, curly sheets, ricotta, ground meat and tomato sauce. Here, the thinner the sheets of fresh pasta, the better. And the more layers, the better. "Americans need to make it like?this,"?Britt pointed out in between bites and I couldn't agree more!

Creamy Zucchini Lasagna

2 medium zucchini, sliced lengthwise

1 box no-boil, flat lasagna sheets (you probably won?t use them all)

3 1/2 tablespoons butter

3 1/2 tablespoons flour

2 cups milk (more if necessary)

3/4 cup fresh ricotta

1/4 cup fresh basil

grated parmigiano reggiano cheese

salt and pepper

Grill sliced zucchini on a grill pan or outdoor grill. Season them with a pinch of salt and pepper after grilling. Make the bechamel sauce: Heat a saucepan over medium and melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk until combined. Add the milk and continue to whisk for about 5 minutes or until thick. Add the basil and ricotta, salt and pepper to taste,? stir and set aside. (If it continues to thicken, you can add some more milk to loosen it up a bit.) Heat the oven to 350 degrees. In a 9x9 square baking dish, create the layers; first a layer of the sauce, then the pasta sheets, the zucchini (don?t overlap them), then a sprinkling of the grated parm. Continue to the last layer, finishing with just the sauce, a generous sprinkling of cheese and some ground pepper. Bake for 20 minutes or until bubbly. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.?

It's going to be an action-packed weekend, since I have to bring Britt all over town to share a true Barletta going-out experience. You know there'll be dancing and laughing at better-dressed-than-us Italian boys and lots of fun, fruity drinks and definitely some bad techno! Bring it on!?

pangeasposi.org ? Business Loans

The company loan is an essential part of most business operations. To be totally clear though, we are talking about business finance in the form of the loans that businesses take out instead of any loans they may well make themselves. There?s a number of distinct sorts also, based on what?s actually involved. We?ll go via a couple of of them here.

So first of all you have your bog standard commercial loan. This is a loan which will probably be acquired by a enterprise just because it is a nicely run company, it has a decent turn over and it will be able to pay for the loan via its revenue. There?s nothing special involved here and it?s something that banks will make accessible. To get the best prices though, the best interest rates on commercial loans, going to a commercial broker can be a excellent idea. There are plenty of other enterprise lenders out there who may well just offer lower rates than the banks are doing.

Then you?ve your loans that are connected to something in specific.

So there?s your asset finance, for instance. This indicates that you are able to acquire a capital asset, some piece of machinery for instance, but not pay outright for it. Rather you?ll be able to get financing so that you?ll be able to pay for it in instalments. The folks you?re purchasing the asset off might not be willing to go for that arrangement, but you should be able to locate a commercial lender who is willing to purchase it for you, and then you?ll pay them back. It makes the asset more costly in the long run, but signifies that your cash flow is substantially improved.

Similar to asset finance is property finance.

Again, rather than paying for it upfront, something only extremely rich and liquid businesses would be able to complete anyway, they can get a commercial mortgage. This can be something banks will also supply but to get commercial mortgage rates as low as you?ll be able to going to a commercial broker is good business generally.

Then you?ll find the less conventional business finance alternatives, things that banks do not always provide. That may be things like factoring. In a factoring arrangement, the commercial lender will pay for invoices that the business sends out. They pay about 90% straight away, and then after the client has got around to truly paying it, then the organization will get the rest. Needless to say that?s less the fee that the lender takes for providing the organization with this service. Invoice discounting is precisely the very same except that the client will not know what?s going on, they will not realise that a lender is involved.

When things are not going so properly what a organization is going to need, perhaps, is an insolvency arrangement. Sometimes organizations take too long, they don?t need to admit to themselves that they are in severe difficulties, and they are unable to stay away from administration. If they do concede the issue early on though, then they needs to be able to get a CVA. This may make their creditors accept a deal whereby the company?s debts are reduced and they don?t have to pay so a lot back each month. Which will make it achievable to stay in company, to stay trading, and to keep the directors and shareholders in charge of the organisation. That?s certainly far a lot more advantageous towards the organization then and provides them a great opportunity to recover.

So there are plenty of distinct purposes to which commercial finance may be put, and it is nearly always better if a commercial loan broker is involved.

Tony Scott Brain Cancer Report Appears in Doubt

The family of director Tony Scott, who died Sunday after jumping off a Los Angeles bridge, was not aware Scott had cancer, Los Angeles County Coroner Ed Winter told ABC News station KABC in Los Angeles.

ABC News was unable to reach Scott's family to confirm the coroner's statement.

ABC News had reported the director of films such as "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder" and "Crimson Tide" had inoperable brain cancer, citing a source close to Scott.

Police said they received a 911 call at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday that an individual had jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

The body was recovered around 3 p.m., when it was identified by authorities as Scott, according to Lt. Joseph Bale of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

Depression and Asthma Linked in People Worldwide

In countries around the world, people with asthma appear to have an increased risk of depression, a new study finds.

The results show that among people living in 57 countries, those with asthma had more than double the odds of experiencing depression compared with those without asthma.

While previous studies have linked asthma and depression, the majority have been conducted in ?the Western world, including North America, Australia and Europe. Because countries differ in such factors as common asthma treatments and access to health care, it wasn?t clear whether this link would be found in non-Western nations, the researchers said.

"Despite a range of country differences that could affect the association of asthma with depression?the results of this study indicate that the co-occurrence of asthma and depression is a universal phenomenon," the researchers write in the Aug. 9 issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology. Moreover, the link appears to be strongest in non-Western countries, the researchers said.

The findings are important, because people who experience depression along with asthma have worse health, including increased severity of asthma, a greater risk of hospitalization and a higher risk of dying, the researchers say.

However, it's not clear now whether all asthma patients should be screened for depression, because it's not known if treating depression could improve asthma symptoms, the researchers said.

Adrian Loerbroks, of Heidelberg University's Mannheim Institute of Public Health in Germany, and colleagues analyzed information from more than 245,700 people who had completed the 2002 World Health Survey. Participants reported whether they had ever been diagnosed with asthma, or had experienced attacks of wheezing in the last year. They also answered questions intended to diagnose major depression, such as whether, within the last year, they experienced a loss of interest in activities they enjoy.

Overall, about 6.4 percent of people had asthma, and 10.3 percent had wheezing. Rates of asthma ranged from 3.9 percent in Africa to 19 percent in Australia, and rates of wheezing ranged from 8.2 percent in Africa to 19 percent in Australia. About 8.4 percent of people experienced major depression within the last year.

The link between the conditions was strongest among people in South America and Asia, although it was also present in Europe, Australia and Africa.

It's still not clear whether having asthma might cause depression, or vice versa.

It's possible that psychological stress, such as that from depression, affects the immune system in a way that predisposes people to asthma. For instance, stress may increase inflammation in the airway, which could lead to asthma, according to a review published last year in Primary Care Respiratory Journal.

It could also be that asthma patients with depression suffer worse breathing symptoms because they do not adhere to their asthma treatments, or because they perceive their symptoms as more intense, the review says.

Pass it on: The link between asthma and depression holds true no matter where in the world people live.

Attacks on Palestinians kindle debate on values

(AP) ? Two vicious attacks on Palestinians, presumed to be the work of Jews, have some Israelis worried that their society is increasingly tolerant of hate crimes.

Over the weekend, unknown assailants firebombed a Palestinian taxi in the West Bank. Hours later, a mob of Jewish teens beat a 17-year-old Palestinian unconscious in downtown Jerusalem.

Israeli leaders have condemned the violence. On Tuesday, President Shimon Peres said he was "mortified" by the "intolerable" attack on the teen.

Others are cautioning against making broad indictments of Israeli society, arguing that incidents of violence and intolerance are not widespread, despite constant tensions from the longstanding conflict between Arabs and Jews.

One suspect in the attack on the Arab teen hinted at the corrosive effect of that conflict when he declared outside court on Monday, "He could die for all I care ? he's an Arab."

The suspect was among seven people, aged 13 to 19, who have been arrested in connection with the assault on 17-year-old Jamal Julani. Bystanders watched as he was kicked and beaten, to the point that he was in critical condition when was brought into a Jerusalem hospital early Friday. He has since regained consciousness but remains hospitalized, a spokeswoman for Hadassah Medical Center said Tuesday.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the violence was not the act of Jewish extremists, but "just kids" egged on by a Jewish girl who claimed to have been involved in an unspecified "sexual incident" with an Arab, an account her lawyer denied.

Rosenfeld said no arrests have been made in Thursday's firebombing of the Palestinian taxi, which wounded the six people inside. One remained in intensive care on Tuesday, and four others also remained hospitalized, Hadassah spokeswoman Etti Dvir said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to bring the people responsible for the firebombing to justice and relayed that message to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. His spokesman, Mark Regev, said the government "will have no tolerance whatsoever for racist violence."

Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon described the two weekend attacks as "terrorist acts" that "run contrary to Jewish ethics and values."

Critics charge that authorities are lax in pursuing Jews suspected of attacking Palestinians, noting few indictments or convictions in dozens of cases of assaults on Palestinians and their property every year.

They also accuse some of Israel's political and spiritual leaders of creating a toxic atmosphere by condoning ? and even encouraging ? violence against Arabs.

"Even the denunciation of the prime minister and other public figures can't obscure the fact that this (attack on the Arab teen) has a deep-seated political and social context," the Haaretz newspaper editorialized on Tuesday.

Social critics note that the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has bred hatred, dehumanization and violence on both sides. Palestinian attacks on Israeli vehicles in the West Bank are frequent, and many Palestinians consider them legitimate forms of resistance against Israeli occupation.

The Israeli military counted 196 Palestinian firebomb attacks and six shooting incidents in the first half of 2012, but it did not provide information on casualties.

Gerald Steinberg, a political science professor at Bar-Ilan University, said the incidence of violence among Israelis is not exceptional in the world context.

"There are pockets within Israeli society, particularly among young teenagers, where there is a history of violence, intolerance, across the board. It extends to Jewish groups in Israel as much as it does to Palestinians," he said. "The evidence clearly shows that Israel is not any more tolerant than the United States or Europe, and there is a lot of stress in this society."

How to make sure that the first 'getting-to-know-you' meeting actually ...

How many times have you been introduced via email and then nothing happens? You (or the other person) may exchange an email, but then nada. So why is this, and how can you increase the priority of the two of you moving from email to a phone call or physical meeting.

Here are my thoughts on how to do this:

1. Prime the introduction

When you get offered an introduction, do request that the person introducing you explains why you should talk. I?ve had a couple of introductions where I?ve been told, ?you both should speak?. Mmmm, great, smashing super? but this doesn?t help me gauge whether we should both meet.

2. Tell them about yourself

Very often, you do get an introduction out of the blue ? and both of you are wondering whether to follow it up or not. It is worth replying to these emails with a pen portrait about you, and a link to your LinkedIn profile (if you need a little help to brush this up, take a look at 10 ways to showcase your credibility on LinkedIn ?and 8 ways to pimp up your LinkedIn profile) Or if you are now wondering with what to do with LinkedIn now you have a good profile, then click on the link. However, do give them the opportunity to say no to a phone call to you.

3. Follow up the introduction

Don?t just wait for the other person to contact you. Contact them ? both via email, LinkedIn, Twitter. If you don?t hear anything from them after your first email then diarise just one more email to them, to see if they are interested in meeting? up.

4. Explain where you think that there may be benefit for them to meet you

All too often we only think about the benefit of us to meeting them. Take a look at their LinkedIn profile and what you can find out about them online. How could you help them?

What tips do you have to make sure you get that first getting to know you meeting?

PFT: Titans name Locker as starting QB

Indianapolis Colts v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images

Colts rookie Andrew Luck seems like the kind of quarterback who?s not going to let a bad pass or a bad quarter or a bad game rattle him.

But he also showed there are a few things he has to work on in the Colts? 26-24 loss to Pittsburgh.

Luck has a degree of polish many passers do not have when they walk in the door. But he also hasn?t seen the things he will see, and that was evident in the early going against the Steelers.

His second interception was off the hands of rookie wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, and obviously not his fault. The first, however, was all him.?Luck zoomed in on his receiver, didn?t drive off his back foot and it was picked off by Ike Taylor and returned for a touchdown.

It?s the kind of pass he has to avoid making, as he doesn?t have the kind of elite arm strength to get away with such mistakes. That?s not to say he?s noodle-armed. His arm is sufficient. Not great, but strong enough, and coupled with his smarts, should enable him to be quite good.

But he?s young. The mistakes will happen.

But the fact he led touchdown drives after each of the picks shows he?s got a little something about him. He was 8-of-9 for 96 yards passing after the second one. That?s amnesia, and that?s special for a kid his age.

Here are some other things we learned on Sunday Night Football.

1. The league can say whatever it wants about the quality of replacement officials.

But even if they?re able to cram the rulebook the way I did for college exams and spit it back for the short term, there are important things they aren?t proving able to do.

First and foremost is executing the player-safety function of the job.

When Colts wide receiver Austin Collie left the game in the first half after taking a shot to the head from linebacker Larry Foote, but that was the first. Cornerback Ike Taylor got him high as well. If it?s a concussion, it?s four in the last two years for Collie.

Those are the shots the real refs are now conditioned to be vigilant for, and the replacements aren?t getting it done.

2. Everyone keeps saying they expect holdout wide receiver Mike Wallace to roll in any day now.

Maybe he should hurry, because the Steelers didn?t exactly look like they missed him.

The Steelers have already given Antonio Brown a spite contract in Wallace?s absence, then started funneling the ball his way.

Brown?s 57-yard touchdown catch-and-run, on national television, is the kind of thing that could get Wallace packing a bag and heading to Pittsburgh sooner rather than later.

3. Veteran Colts wideout Reggie Wayne?s going to move around more than he ever has this year, and he can still be a dangerous weapon.

It?s just going to take some time getting used to watching him go in motion.

The Colts don?t have the kind of protection and overall talent to go toe-to-toe with teams, so they?re going to have to use personnel groups and formations to mix it up.

And if Wayne?s willing to do stuff he?s never had to do before, that?s just part of the mix.

4. ?Speaking of that talent: Other than Wayne, the Colts receivers aren?t much to look at. But their tight ends could be something.

In Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, they have a pair of players who could grow with Luck for years.

They?re smart to give him safe options in the passing game since he doesn?t have much on the outside.

5. Chuck Pagano?s striking the right note with this whole ?Build the Monster,? thing he?s selling, passing out shirts with the slogan and the Colts at the bottom of a power ranking.

NFL teams are so evenly clumped that you can get from bad to decent in a hurry.? Usually if it was bad enough for a coaching change, the holdovers are disgruntled and looking for an attitude change too. Picking a fight with anyone (media, opponent, the man) is a sure way to rally the troops.

The Colts aren?t going to the playoffs, but they could be better. Having an edge can be worth three or four wins.

6. Get well soon, Max Starks.

The Steelers need you.

Rookie left tackle Mike Adams might get ready at some point. That point is not now.

7.?The Florio Research Network points out that Adam Vinatieri?s 53-yard field goal before the half was a new Heinz Field record by a yard. The old mark of 52 was held by Jeff Reed.

8.?Colts backup QB Drew Stanton now has more touchdowns this preseason than Jets quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow combined.

Who?s sorry now?

9. Sometimes it takes lower-case L luck. The Colts had a special teams meeting in the backfield, and the game-winning field goal by the Steelers still crept across. No real explanation, and the grin on Mike Tomlin?s face said it all.
