Olympic sports fans left bleary-eyed in Asia

It's the early hours of the morning and people would normally be in bed ahead of their workday, but not at the giant Steyne pub in Sydney or in living rooms across Asia.

The Olympics are on and billions of people worldwide are glued to televisions and cheering on their local stars, or following the action on social media with athletes being encouraged to blog or tweet.

But with London nine hours behind Australia's eastern states and six or seven hours behind most Asian nations, many events are being held overnight, meaning a potentially tired and dysfunctional workforce for the next two weeks.

Paul Harwood, a 24-year-old plumber, was transfixed by a big screen in the Steyne Hotel just before midnight in the Sydney beachside suburb of Manly.

"Yes, I need to go to work in the morning but it's the Olympics," he said as he watched men's boxing.

"I'm not going to be doing it night after night, but definitely for some of the main athletics events, like the 100 metres. It only happens every four years."

According to a recent nationwide poll in sports-mad Australia, 86 percent of those questioned planned to watch the Games on television, while others would monitor the gold medal hunt on websites, Youtube, Twitter or Facebook.

Australia's Olympic television marathon, with the free-to-air Nine Network screening 14.5 hours of live action each day and pay-tv broadcaster Foxtel showing 24/7 coverage on eight dedicated channels, is mirrored across Asia.

China's late-night armchair fans have access to a plethora of online tips on surviving the Olympics -- from face masks to avoid looking like they have been up all night, to Chinese medicine ingredients that help relieve backache.

Some private hospitals posted online "midnight soup" recipes containing herbal ingredients designed to enable viewers to stay alert late into the night.

For others, it is not a question of staying up late, but rather getting up early.

Emma Smythe, a 50-year-old Sydney public servant, said she planned to be up for the swimming finals at 4.30am each day they are on.

"I know they'll be long days, but I plan to get up early quite a lot during the Games. Watching replays isn't the same as live action," she said.

As bleary-eyed sports fans roll up for work, the Australian Medical Association warned of the dangers of not getting enough sleep, with president Steve Hambleton cautioning people not to go "berserk".

"If you spend five nights in a row without having proper sleep you'll pay for it," he said.

"Your concentration levels, in fact the health benefits (generally) of adequate amounts of sleep and work-life balance, are really, really important.

"We don't want people to have car accidents because they're fatigued and fall asleep on the way home from work."

Late nights, or early starts, also bring other health risks, with nutritionists warning that junk food intake will rise as people turn to sugary, salty and fatty treats to stay awake.

In Japan, convenience stores have boosted their inventories of light meals such as instant noodles to meet an expected boost in demand for late-night snacks.

It is a similar scenario in South Korea where fast-food delivery outlets are experiencing up to three times their normal business, Yonhap news agency said.

Hambleton recommended replacing junk food with healthier snacks, and urged people to mimic the athletes and be active while watching the Games, rather than stay prone on a couch or a barstool.

"It's important to move around," he said. "Screen time ultimately is a predictor of obesity."

While millions will yawn their way through the next fortnight, not everyone is prepared to lose sleep, or suffer the health risks that could come with it.

"I cannot (stay up), knowing I have to go to work on the next day," said Hidefusa Miyama, 65, from Tokyo.

And while the appetite for live viewing is strong in Australia and other nations, some fans in Malaysia were content to watch replays at a more civilised hour.

Hafiz Noor Shams, a 30-year-economist in Kuala Lumpur, said: "I can watch it when I want and where I want. Hail to the Olympics on Youtube."

How To Use a Testamentary Trust | Robert J. Kulas, P.A. Attorneys at ...

Jul 30, 2012 ?/? By: Robert J. Kulas, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Trust Administration

A testamentary trust is often a useful estate planning device, especially for parents who have young children. Though creating the trust is not especially difficult, you will need to answer several key questions and ensure that your testamentary trust is adequately prepared. Here are three tips that will help you get started in the right direction.

Tip 1. Select the people involved

A testamentary trust gets created through your Last Will and Testament and only takes effect once you die. Like other trusts, you select the property that goes into the trust and who gets to use it. The people who get to use the trust are usually your minor children, known as the beneficiaries. However, you?ll also need to select someone who will be willing to manage the property on behalf of the beneficiaries, known as the trustee. You can also select alternate trustees in case your first choice is unable or unwilling to serve.

Tip 2: Choose the limitations

Unlike direct inheritances, testamentary trusts allow you to place limits on how the trust property is used. It?s very common, for example, for testamentary trusts to dictate that children will inherit part of the trust property at certain ages. For example, you can direct that the children receive one third of the trust property once they reach the age of 18, 25, and 30. Or, you can direct that the children do not receive the trust property until they graduate college.

Tip 3: Formalize your choices

Once you?ve made your decisions about the testamentary trust it?s important to speak your estate planning lawyer so you can be sure your trust is adequately created. You will need to include the terms in your Will and make sure the will complies with all state laws.

Robert J. Kulas, P.A. Attorneys at Law is a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys.

Concordia research proves consumers are drawn to centrally placed products

Montreal, July 30, 2012 Rows of chip bags in a vending machine, endless bottles of shampoo on pharmacy shelves, long lines of books arranged in the bestsellers section at the bookstore. From supermarket shelves to barroom beer selection, long lines of horizontally arranged products are the norm when it comes to the shopping experience.

But how does where a product is placed on the storeroom shelf influence which option a consumer will ultimately choose? It turns out that the shopper's eye has a very central focus.

"Consumers are more likely to purchase products placed in the middle of a display without even being aware of it," says Onur Bodur. The associate professor from Concordia's John Molson School of Business is the co-author of a recent study forthcoming in the Journal of Consumer Research and co-authored by marketing researchers at HEC in France and the Aston Business School in England.

Using eye-tracking devices, Bodur and his colleauges investigated how location influences choices for products as varied as vitamins, meal replacement bars, and energy drinks.

They found that consumers would increase their visual focus on the central option in a product display area in the final five seconds of the decision-making process and that was the point at which they determined which option to choose.

It turns out that the process is a subconscious one. When asked how they had come to decide on what product to buy, consumers did not accurately recall their choice process. What's more, they were not aware of any conscious visual focus on one area of the display over another.

What does uncovering these unconscious habits mean this mean for the average shopper? Greater awareness of buying behaviours should lead to more informed choices. Says Bodur, "by using this newfound knowledge that visual attention is naturally drawn to the center of a display, consumers can consciously train themselves to make a more thorough visual scan of what's on offer."

When it comes to shopping, the visual equivalent to thinking outside of the box just might lead to savvier selections.

'Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry'

Having chosen the struggle for Chinese human rights over a life of privilege, Ai Weiwei is arguably the world?s most important activist-artist. Yet despite his international prominence (he even has an asteroid named after him), Ai faced a head-spinning array of specious charges trumped up by the communist authorities.

Alison Klayman offers a timely documentary-profile in courage with the fascinating and infuriating Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, which opens this Friday in New York at the IFC Center.

\>");

Considering the recurring middle finger motif in Ai?s work, it?s hardly surprising that he is not a favorite of the regime. Yet, there is more to Ai than mere symbolic defiance. Klayman trenchantly traces the roots of Ai?s nonconformist spirit to the suffering his family experienced during the Cultural Revolution.

While Ai made some noise when he repudiated the Olympics, few could hear it within China. However, his mastery of social media, specifically Twitter, would change all that. Indeed, Ai and the legions of everyday Chinese citizens he inspired through tweets ought to put everyone following celebrities like Ashton Kutcher to shame.

Most Westerners should know that Ai was held incommunicado for a long stretch by the police, but the projects that earned the artist the communist regime?s wrath may come as a revelation.

Most notable were his efforts to record each name of the thousands of school children who died during the Sichuan earthquake as a result of flimsy ?tofu? school construction. In any transparent society, this information would be in the public record, but in China all such efforts were explicitly forbidden.

Ai Weiwei at his home, in the documentary. (Ted Alcorn/ Sundance Selects)

There are scores of lessons to be found in ?Sorry,? including the importance of documenting such tragedies for history, rather than letting the innocent victims of Sichuan fall through the communist memory hole. At times, Ai?s public criticisms of the regime are shockingly bold. Clearly, his guts are made of steel-reinforced concrete.

Although Klayman largely focuses on his activism, she still conveys a vivid sense of Ai?s personality. Partly this comes out through some shrewdly edited interview segments. Yet more fundamentally, Ai just seems to be a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of person.

Indeed, Klayman wisely focuses squarely on her subject. As a documentarian, she is rather blessed that Ai recorded so many of his protests and the subsequent government crackdowns for his social network followers.

His own documentaries Disturbing the Peace and So Sorry are staggering exposes in their own right, still quite findable on the Internet and ardently recommended.

The word ?controversial? should not really apply here. What Ai says has happened, most definitely including a notorious police assault, really did go down. He has the scars and the video to prove it. Aside from some helpful context provided by talking heads and an innocuous score, ?Sorry? is essentially Ai?s show?and appropriately so.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

Director: Alison Klayman
Cast: Ai Weiwei, Danqing Chen, Ying Gao
Running Time: 96 minutes
Rating: R
Language: English and Mandarin with English subtitles?

We want to call a film like ?Sorry? ?inspiring.? It is a term that undeniably applies to Ai. Unfortunately, though he might be out of immediate physical danger, Ai?s relative freedoms within contemporary China remain harshly curtailed, so viewers are likely to feel several conflicting emotions when the film ends. Anger would be a good one to go with.

This documentary is important, because the international spotlight must shine with far more intensity on Teacher Ai?s situation if circumstances are ever going to change.

Given the Chinese Communist Party?s nasty habit of harassing its critics, Klayman also earns a fair amount of credit for having the guts to tackle this project in the first place. Hopefully, she will have to produce a happy postscript for ?Sorry? sometime in the future, but surely she would not begrudge the extra work.

As it is, the efforts invested in ?Sorry? are considerable. One of two standout documentaries at this year?s Sundance (along with The Other Dream Team), Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry earns a very high recommendation as well when it opens this Friday (July 27) in New York at the IFC Center.

Russian unmanned spacecraft docks on second try

MOSCOW | Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:41am EDT

MOSCOW (Reuters) - An upgraded Russian unmanned spacecraft successfully linked up with the International Space Station on Sunday on its second attempt to test a new docking system, Russia's space agency said.

The docking set aside doubts over the new Kurs-NA rendezvous system that will deliver astronauts and future cargoes to the orbital station after a botched first test when the equipment malfunctioned due to low temperatures earlier this week.

The operating system functioned properly after it was allowed to warm up, according to a statement from the U.S. space agency NASA.

Kurs-NA is an upgrade of the Kurs docking gear used for years on Russia's manned Soyuz and robotic Progress spacecrafts.

The system consolidates five antennas into one, has updated electronics and is designed to improve safety and use less power, according to NASA.

The Progress ship re-docked with the Pirs module at 0100 GMT (9 p.m. EDT on Saturday), the Russian space agency Roscomos said in a statement, for a brief final stay before the single-use craft, laden with space station trash, is due to burn up on re-entry over the Pacific Ocean on July 30.

Since the retirement of the U.S. space shuttles last year, the United States has been dependent on Russia and is paying $60 million per person to fly astronauts to the ISS, a $100 billion research complex orbiting 240 miles above Earth.

Moscow is struggling to restore the prestige of its once-pioneering space program after a string of launch mishaps last year, including the failure of a mission to return samples from the Martian moon Phobos.

Six astronauts are currently aboard the orbital outpost: American Sunita Williams, Japan's Akihiko Hoshide and Russian Yury Malenchenko joined cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin and US astronaut Joseph Acaba earlier this month.

Learn The Dating Tricks To Meet Girls On The Internet.

The pitfalls involved with digital communication

While the information age affords this novel array of expression and the potential to connect with a myriad of different types of people in ways that were never before imagined. There are some obstacles that need to be taken into consideration. Obstacles that may hinder your ability to come across as an attractive person. These obstacles are elusively subtle at first and we?ll let you know of the pitfalls to avoid.

Insert specifics on subtle psychology

Other things you?ll learn.

  • Learn about two elusively important parts of your profile ? the username and the email subject line. As we saw in the screenshot above, what most men don?t realize is, of the hundreds of email messages she will receive, the first two things she looks at are the username and subject line. And, it is often based on this information alone, that she must decide to open, or delete your email.
  • Learn the magic that makes an attractive stanza of dating profile text. Ultimately. She WILL decide to greet you (or get rid of you) BASED ON WHAT YOU WRITE. Your profile textual content is always the LAST thing she looks at. Even if your email was wonderful and your picture was amazing, if you screw up in your profile text, she will be clicking the delete button.
  • Learn the keys to Profile SEO (Search Engine Optimization). When she?s searching for a man, she?ll be typing in certain keywords. Does your profile have these keywords in it? Do you know how to get your profile on the top of her search results page?
  • Learn which dating sites to sign up for, and which ones to avoid. Don?t be fooled. There are thousands of dating websites out there, and most of them are pretty awful.
  • Learn to spot a scam. I have personally talked to Russian girls looking for money, and transvestites looking for straight guys. It?s a jungle out there?
  • Learn how to tell which members are actively searching for love, and which accounts are long dead. Even Match.com and Yahoo Personals have been sued for maintaining faux inactive profiles.
  • Learn the different frames of mind women adopt when they meet a guy online, versus, say, in a nightclub. When you understand the vast psychological differences at play here, you?ll kick yourself for not utilizing this information earlier.
  • Learn about the various female archetypes and how to fashion your introduction to make it happen for both of you.
  • Learn when to listen to the woman, and when to ignore her. Remember, being a woman is not easy. She is putting both her physical and emotional well-being on the line when she romantically interacts with a man. Hence, women will often engage in impudent behavior or throw up dating roadblocks that you need to be able to spot.
  • Learn the four essential parts that every introductory email absolutely MUST contain. If you don?t know what ?CTA? stands for, it?s time to learn.
  • Learn when to stop emailing and start making real life dates. Possibly because of fear, or lack of confidence, most men tend to send way too many emails to interested woman. If you keep this up, you will just become a curious video game to her.
  • Learn the things that you should NEVER talk about, yet most guys always do.
  • Learn exactly when you should call her, text message her, and see her in person.

WATCH: Is Real Estate Still A Good Investment? From Maria Bartiromo

When Maria Bartiromo, financial expert and anchor of CNBC's "Closing Bell" met with me on Mondays With Marlo, she answered a question that many of us have been wondering - is real estate still a good investment?

If you'd like more financial knowledge and advice on how to make your money grow, check out Maria's advice:

  • Scams

To avoid getting ripped-off, follow this one simple rule: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Don't expect overnight riches; invest for the long-term.

  • Money Buckets

There are three places you should put your money: a savings account for emergencies, a 401(k), for retirement, and a "mad money" bucket, for treats.

  • Protect Your Money

Interest rates on saving accounts are hardly keeping pace with inflation these days. A good alternative is to invest your money in dividend-paying stocks. Some deliver returns of between 4% and 7%, including dividend-paying ETFs.

  • Jobs Of The Future

Nothing is growing as fast as data, so any job in technology is a job of the future. As we're all living longer and struggling with problems of obesity, and such, health care is another top field for jobs.

  • Credit Cards

We all know how easy it is to fall into a debt trap with credit cards. Only use a credit card if you can pay more than the minimum each month. Ideally, you'd pay off the balance each billing cycle. American Express, for example, requires you to pay it all back in one shot.

  • Take Risks

Think outside the box; you never know where it'll lead. It could be the biggest mistake of your life, or a great career move. If it doesn't work, you can always brush yourself off and start over again.

  • Selling Your Home

Put your house on the market and see what kind of numbers you get. Don't try to time the market. Be realistic; it's not the worst part of the crisis, but we probably have at least two more years for the housing sector to recover.

  • Picking Investments

Don't get distracted by hype. Instead, look at company fundamentals: revenue growth, earnings growth, the management team, insider ownership, and the company's product. Ask yourself: will this product be in demand in the coming years?

  • Retirement

We're living longer, so we need to keep our minds going past retirement age. Stay active and keep working!

  • When To Start A 401(k)

Start a 401(k) in your 20s. It'll have more time grow, and you'll have a nice nest egg at retirement. If your company doesn't do matching, open an IRA on your own through any brokerage service.

Text-to-speech technology innovations are giving a voice to children ...

Prololoquo2Go gives voice to those who cannot speak. The technology is the product of AssistiveWare, a company founded in 2000 that provides assistive technology software to address physical, vision, communication and reading impairment problems. Screen and application reading software has been around for several decades. These applications have always sounded artificial and have been limited to adult voices. But not anymore. For the first time children who use such technologies can sound like children and communicate in near real-time.

To see this software in action visit the AssistiveWare YouTube channel. You?ll be amazed at how effective this technology is for children.

Proloquo2Go works on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch technology from Apple. It uses a symbolic touch keyboard that includes icons that can be strung together with letters and numbers to form complete sentences. See the image below on an iPad tablet to get a sense of what the communication interface is all about.

Proloquo2Go provides children who have difficulty speaking with an application that not only lets them communicate but sounds like them. Source: AssistiveWare

Users can speak with a boy or girl voice. For users in the U.K. they even come with appropriate British accents.

The evolution in the quality of how speech synthesis technology sounds is largely the result of the increasing speed of today?s computer processors and the low cost of memory for computing devices. The portability of computing technology with mobile devices makes it possible for text-to-speech to be carried by a user with a disability. In the past applications like this were only available on desktop or laptop computers.

Proloquo2Go allows for conversational interaction. The voices sound very real although there is no emotional content in the conversation, so it still sounds somewhat artificial. But even that challenge is being taken up by application developers.

Speech Hedge is a pilot project attempting to create a conversational text-to-speech interface with sixteen different tones of voice that reflect mood.? Watch a video at this site to get a sense of what is involved in developing emotion in synthetic speech. The technology is being developed to work with the Apples iPhone, iPod and iPad.

Text-to-speech application development is looking at tonality to create a more natural conversational exchange. Seen here is a DECtalk terminal using an iPod with the Speech Hedge application allowing the user to choose the style of speech in response to a conversation. Source: Speakingunit.com

If your retirement years are rapidly approaching, you have some big decisions to make. The biggest one is where you?re going to live. It?s much better to make this decision as early as possible. By doing so, you will have time to investigate as many senior living communities as possible. If you wait until the last minute, you?ll have to rush through the process and might not get what you want. After working so hard all your life, don?t you want to live in a place that meets and exceeds all of your requirements? The following tips for transitioning into retirement community living are sure to help.

  • Start Your Financial Planning Early ? Get a rough idea about how much it?s going to cost to live in a retirement community. Set a budget well ahead of time, and make sure to stick to it. Be practical. The early years of retirement is not the time to overextend yourself. Give yourself some wiggle room so that you?re not always stressed out about money.
  • Consult with Loved Ones ? Give your loved ones a head?s up about your retirement community plans. Ask them for advice or input. Keep an open mind. After all, this is a situation that affects everyone. They all want you to be happy, and some of them may have great ideas or suggestions that you?ve never considered.
  • Check with Friends ? If you have friends who have moved into senior living communities, ask them about their experiences. This is a great way to get an insider?s opinion about local retirement communities, and it can give you an idea about what to ask when looking at them.
  • Know what You Want ? Make a list of the amenities, features and activities that you can?t live without. Come up with specific ideas about location too. This list will make it a lot easier for you to whittle down your list.
  • Tour as Many Communities as Possible ? Pay visits to as many local retirement communities as possible. Make notes about the things you like and the things you don?t like. By this point, you should be left with a very manageable list of options.
  • Try a Test Run ? Considering that you?ll be calling the retirement community home for a long time, you should arrange an overnight or extended visit before making your final decision. When that?s done, a clear winner should emerge.
  • When it comes to living out your golden years happily and comfortably, choosing the right retirement community is critical. It?s one decision that you shouldn?t take lightly, so keep these tips in mind during your search.

Could Gene Doping Be Part of Future Olympics?

THURSDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) -- Despite all the training, sweat, dedication and sacrifice that goes into becoming an Olympic competitor, these elite athletes also tend to have an advantage that average sports lovers lack: superior DNA. Just like eye color or a keen intellect, a constellation of the "right" genes can grace certain athletes with world-class speed, strength and endurance.

But with the advent of gene therapy -- technology on the cusp of helping treat grave illnesses -- are the days of "natural selection" of super-athletes coming to an end?

Genetics and athletics experts fear that the 2012 Olympic Games, opening Friday in London, may be the last without competitors secretly hinging their gold medal hopes on "gene doping" -- modifying their DNA to make themselves bigger, stronger or faster -- and that such gene manipulation may one day match the use of illicit performance-enhancing substances.

"Gene doping has been sort of smoldering as a theoretical possibility for at least two or three sets of Olympic Games," said Dr. Ted Friedmann, chair of the genetics panel of the World Anti-Doping Agency. "If you ask me how many more years it'll be before it's done, well, I'd say a very long time. But how many more years before some idiot does something stupid? That could be tomorrow," he added.

"The technology is ripe for abuse by badly trained people," explained Friedmann, also director of the Center for Molecular Genetics at the University of California, San Diego. "The chance of effectiveness if done by current methods is almost nil."

According to an article published July 19 in the journal Nature, more than 200 gene variants have been associated with athletic prowess, including a variant of the ACE gene linked to endurance and an alternative copy of the ACTN3 gene -- dubbed the "speed gene" and found in nearly every male Olympic sprinter ever tested.

While therapeutic gene therapy -- injecting foreign DNA into muscle or bone to change a person's genetic makeup, creating proteins that infiltrate tissue or blood -- still carries too many side effects be widely used, cases already exist of doping where the protein (rather than the gene that encodes it) is taken to improve performance, said Dr. Kathryn North, an Australian researcher whose 2010 study on the ACTN3 gene helped establish its link to sprinters and power athletes.

Examples include the manipulation of the EPO gene, which increases hemoglobin levels, boosting blood's oxygen-carrying capabilities, she said. Finnish athlete Eero Mantyranta, the winner of seven Olympic cross-country skiing medals, naturally carries such a mutation, elevating his oxygen-carrying capacity by 25 percent to 50 percent, according to the Nature article.

Tests to root out gene-doping are still being developed and aren't ready for prime time, but apparently these rogue proteins can already be detected.

"Gene-doping is not yet a reality, but the technology to detect doping will evolve along with the techniques to misuse the new genetic technologies," said North, head of the Institute for Neuroscience and Muscle Research at the Children's Hospital at Westmead in Australia.

Indeed, an air of inevitability about gene-doping permeates, though Olympics officials will concentrate for the moment on the 4,500 tests already available for banned substances in their efforts to keep the 2012 Games clean.

Robert Kersey, director of the Athletic Training Education Program at California State University in Fullerton, predicted that the pressure to win -- twinned with monetary pressure from corporate sponsors -- will combine to make gene-doping irresistible to some world-class athletes.

"Humans are greedy and if there's money to be made, people are willing to take those risks," said Kersey, also a professor of kinesiology. "Everyone involved has the potential to make money or fame or fortune out of it . . . you're never going to convince every person who wants to win a gold medal that they shouldn't bend the rules if they feel they have a real chance of winning."

But North and Friedmann pointed out that merely having a favorable gene -- whether for athleticism or any other trait -- doesn't guarantee that gene will express itself in the desired way. A specific combination of many gene variants, in addition to training, environment and attitude, "really make up the complex phenotype that is the elite athlete," North said.

Added Friedmann: "Genes work in an enormously complicated set of interactions, and no gene works by itself. If you have the gene for speed or endurance, all the other genes you carry that [help] or work against that will affect how that gene expresses itself."

Nintendo explains how it tests a DS ? Video Games Reviews ...

Having owned several generations of gaming hardware, my Nintendo devices always seem to be the most hard wearing. That comes down to a combination of great design and thorough testing, and Nintendo has decided to share some of the tests it puts hardware through to ensure it wont break in the sweaty hands of a gamer.

As part of the company?s 2012 consumer report, Nintendo has posted seven pictures along with a summary of the tests it carries out on the Nintendo DS. These are sure to be just a few of the multitude of tests the device has to pass, but it does demonstrate how tough the DS has to be.

As you?d expect, Nintendo tests the strengthof the keys with a button striking durability test. The exterior surface is checked for wear with a rubbing test, the hinges are tested for performance by repeatedly opening and closing them, and even the wiring is tested for strength by bending it and checking for stress.

The final test detailed on the actual hardware itself is the drop test. The height of the drop isn?t specified, but based on the image, it looks to be about a meter above the ground.

Nintendo also extends testing to product packaging so as to keep the DS safe during transport. The two tests detailed include vibrating a box full of devices on a vibration plate, probably to simulate transport on a truck and poor road surfaces. These boxes will also be stacked, so Nintendo squashes them with a predetermined force equaling the maximum stack height shipping allows in either a container or vehicle.

Beyond that, Nintendo carries out a number of temperature and humidity tests to ensure heat, cold, and moisture don?t impact the electronics and result in a faulty device.

The hardware used in the tests will never make it to retail. Nintendo will just regularly pick final hardware from the production line and carry out the tests to ensure a high quality product is shipping out.

UK Information Commissioner Slams Google For Failure To Provide Street View Data

valmont_138_slamGoogle has been in an ongoing war of words with The UK's Information Commissioner. If you remember, Google's street cars captured all sorts of information other than just pictures, like WiFi nodes and even IP traffic, when they drove around. Google is fighting multiple cases across Europe with various public bodies about this. Today Google confirmed that it had located additional payload data collected by its Street View cars prior to May 2010 and the ICO, which has repeatedly asked Google to delete the extra data, has thrown a few choice words in Google's direction.

Relationships Aren't Love Affairs ? suggestivetongue

I just finished the book Wabi Sabi Love: The Ancient Art of Perfect Love in Imperfect Relationships?by Arielle Ford. I picked this book up as a new release because occasionally it can be enlightening to read a good book about relationships. This one was no exception. No matter how much experience (literary or personal) you have in love and relationships, you always learn something new, and you always get good reminders. This book made me sad at times, and really happy at others. While there was brief mentions of God or religion (very brief, IMO) it was always very respectful. It wasn?t ?hands off, God will do things for you? and it wasn?t ?You should do this for God? ? ?it was using God as a backbone for the choices that you make in life, and seeking strength in the beliefs you have that things will be OK. I really enjoyed that, as someone who is not religious.

If I had to summarize the book, it would be in the title line. Relationships Aren?t Love Affairs. The other makes the point that love affairs are about passion. Relationships (and subsequently marriages) are about the irritants that two people have to make them stronger together. Certainly it?s all about love, and happiness, and pleasure, and fun, but it?s also about the work that two people put into a relationship to make it stronger.

Here are some notes, and thoughts, that I jotted down in my notebook from themes the book gave.

When you suffer, when you have a history, you become stronger and more beautiful. It doesn?t damage you or make you less-than.

Crisis can be used as a way to bring two people together and make them stronger. You are forced to admit your faults and your mistakes, and your true self. The fact that you are human and can do wrong shouldn?t be seen as a breaking point, but rather a turning point.

On the thought that a baby can bring love and enrich your marriage/relationship. It is another example of how much love we have to give and spread. Another baby doesn?t make you love your husband less, it makes you love your husband more. Presumably. This point is often used when talking about polyamory. Your partner experiences love or emotion for someone else, but it doesn?t mean they love you less. That love they give can help strengthen?your relationship, because your partner is happy and satisfied. No mention of polyamory (that I can recall) was given in the book. But a lot of the tools could be useful in any style of relationship.

Forgiveness and sincere apologizes are important. Don?t forgive unless you truly forgive. Don?t harbor ill will towards people while you smile and say that everything is OK.

All you can control in life is your response. You cannot, can never, and will not control someone else. I would suppose the harder you try, the more they will rebel ? in some cases. Bad things happen to even the most wonderful people and it?s how you choose to react to these situations that makes you and your relationship.

You should trust your intuition in relationships, not scripts. For instance if you are cheated on the script is that your partner should not be trusted and you should leave them and never return again. If your intuition says this is true, do it. But if your intuition tells you that your partner feels poorly for the mistakes they have made and you want to make your relationship work, don?t feel pressured to do what you ?should? do ? do what you feel is right.

You should not have to end a relationship to feel freedom. If you feel trapped, why do you feel trapped? How can you seek and experience freedom in your relationship? We may not want freedom from our partners, but from the imaginary things we feel bind us to them.

How do we act differently when our children do something badly, or when our partner does something badly? We expect adults to do no wrong, to know better, to not make mistakes. When a child makes a mistake we may tell them what they did wrong and why it was wrong and what to do the next time. We may not give this benefit to adults, who are also still learning, and also still need space to grow.

Share the truths that you are afraid of. RAFT: Reluctant and frighted to share. These things can help you grow closer to your partner, and help you have a more honest relationship. Keep your RAFT short and concise. Tell them you are RAFT ? but you want to step out of your comfort zone to share a part of yourself with them.

We have many soul mates in life, for different purposes, different kinds of love. Nurture those relationships and they will nurture you back.

?In love the paradox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two.? ? Erich Fromm

Irritation over time turns a relationship into a pearl. The things that once made us crazy can make us grateful later. Learn to love the flaws ? the things that makes your partner unique. Find goodness in those flaws.

Our care takes many forms. How does your partner care for you, and how do you care for them? This may look different, and you may not at first perceive it as a care. (For instance: Cooking and cleaning for your partner may be a small act of caring that the partner may perceive as a duty, because this may not be a form of caring that they relate to.) Learn your partners style of caring, the little things they do for you that shows their love.

In order to help someone you have to first help yourself (Re: Putting the mask on in an airplane first before you help others do so) You need to make sure you are in order before you can help others. Fill yourself up with good things (food, sleep, exercise, things that make you happy) so you have more to give. Make?yourself happy. Know how to.

Refuse to suffer in bad situations. Give your partner space and do what you need to do. Offer compassion. Think about how you can care for them and your relationship, now how you can fix the problem or change your partner.
