Family fun on Fourth | Pembroke, Hanson & Whitman Express - Your ...
WHITMAN ? Before you head out to enjoy one of the many area fireworks displays planned over the July 4 weekend ? and police and fire officials prefer that you do ? an old-fashioned family fun day is planned by the Recreation Department in Whitman Park.
All events are free to Whitman residents, but Food Pantry donations are always gratefully accepted at all Whitman Recreation events.
The day bursts from the starting blocks at 8:15 a.m. with the Run for Fun. Registration is from 7:30 ? 8 a.m. This 2.75-mile run is geared toward ages 13 to over 50 and there is no registration fee.
Children can express their patriotic flair at 9:30 a.m. with the bicycle and carriage-decorating contest followed by a Family Field Day from 10 a.m. ? 1 p.m.
Music, clowns and a moon walk are among the entertainment diversions and foot races, jumping and other contests are planned. Those willing to volunteer for the dunk tank hot seat must me over 18.
?This is basically an old-fashioned family fun day,? said Michelle Winnett, of the Recreation Department event that typically draws several hundred people. ?Not a bad crowd for a Fourth of July morning.?
Ribbons are awarded to contest winners.
The day?s events conclude with a free public swim session for all Whitman residents.
Hanson is not planning any community events for the Fourth, but the Hanson Senior Center will host an Independence Day patriotic sing-along and strawberry shortcake event for resident elders at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 5. The cost is only $1.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal reminds residents that private use of any fireworks materials is illegal. While possession or use does not carry the certain threat of arrest, the fireworks will be confiscated by police and a fine of between $10 and $100 is possible.
Sale of fireworks carries the possibility of arrest, mandatory confiscation and potential fines of between $100 and $1,000 and the possibility of imprisonment for one year.
No confiscated fireworks will be returned.
In the past 10 years, the Massachusetts Fire Incident Reporting System has recorded 774 major fire and explosion incidents involving illegal fireworks. One person was killed, 10 civilians were injured as were six fire service personnel while causing an extimated $2.4 million in damages.
Public fireworks displays in the area are as follows:

New York ? The media magnate is headed back to jail on the flimsiest of charges, even as the perpetrators of massive financial crimes continue to enjoy their freedom
Of all the ugly aspects of the American prosecutorial system, one of the ugliest is its sheer randomness. For the massive fraud that wrecked the U.S. mortgage industry and plunged the world economy into a near-depression, there has been hardly any legal reckoning.
Yet there is one financier the U.S. government remains determined to hold in prison to the end: Canadian media magnate Conrad Black.
Back in 2004, Black was formally accused of running a "corporate kleptocracy" in his Hollinger companies, which owned hundreds of newspapers, including the Chicago Sun-Times, the Jerusalem Post, Britain's Daily Telegraph, and Canada's National Post. Black was accused of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from shareholders. During the very weeks when the subprime bubble was frothing to its peak in 2007 ? when mortgage brokers were forging signatures and rating agencies were sprinkling triple-A ratings on worthless securities ? it was upon Conrad Black (and Conrad Black alone) that the weight of American justice fell.
That sword carried by the statue of Justice? It should be replaced with a roulette wheel, the better to convey its capricious and cruel outcomes.
Black?s business was smashed and his life turned upside down. He was sentenced to 78 months in prison, and buried in tens of millions of dollars in fines and restitution payments. All that came even as his business partners ? including the man with day-to-day management of the business ? were given light sentences.Since the first fierce accusation against Black, the legal case has progressively unraveled. Of the 13 counts of fraud originally brought against him, a jury rejected nine, and higher courts all the way up to the Supreme Court have vacated three. Only one count remains, and that involves the improper receipt of $285,000?? a pitiful remnant of the corporate kleptocracy accusation.
You might think that somebody along the way would decide that Black had been punished to a degree that would have satisfied even the most extreme hanging judge.
You?d be wrong.
Earlier this month, a federal court in Chicago re-sentenced Black, reducing his sentence from 78 months to 42. Black has served 29 months. He was freed on bail after the Supreme Court ruled in his favor earlier this year. He will now return to serve the rest of his sentence.

I want to speak today not about the case, but about the man.
One of the things that must most baffle prosecutors in the case is that Black has gathered to his cause so many ardent defenders in the media and the public in the U.S., his adopted homeland of Britain, and his native Canada.
Genuine financial crooks???Bernie Madoff, for example???are reviled and rejected when their crimes come to light.
In Black?s case, even his fiercest detractors pay tribute to the man's character.
"I have always tried to take success like a gentleman and disappointment like a man," Black has said. I have known Black since I was a teenager, worked for him and his companies in the 1980s and 1990s. I can attest: Black has lived up to his words.
I visited Black in prison two years ago. We spent six hours together. Surrounded by bars and walls, his spirit was as effervescent as ever. We discussed the critical reception of his books. (Among them: An acclaimed rethinking of the life of Franklin Roosevelt, putting the struggle against Hitler at the center of the FDR story.) He told hilarious stories of prison life, including a meeting with a convicted mobster who greeted him as a "fellow industrialist." He told me about his work teaching reading to illiterate convicts???and about the man he had coached through to the completion of a high-school equivalency diploma.
When I returned from the visit, my wife asked how it had gone. I said: "I?d have been utterly depressed if Conrad had not worked so hard to cheer me up."
Now with the prison door closing upon him again after the respite of temporary release, for offenses that have all but dissolved in contact with review and appeal, the man?s magnificent spirit will be tested again. He?ll prove equal to what?s ahead. We who admire and cherish him will again turn to him to console us.
And we are left with a bitter thought: That sword carried by the statue of Justice? It should be replaced with a roulette wheel, the better to convey its capricious and cruel outcomes.

Is Marriage still relevant? Less and less people think so?including Christians. We have become a culture of divorce, free sex, and relationships resting on pleasure. Something has got to change. Should marriage be abandoned? Or should it be restored and rebuilt? Our guest author, Jeffrey Paul Colmen, presents a questioning of marriage. So, perhaps it?s not the nicest thing to say, but?I?m not sure I believe in marriage anymore.
I mean, think about it:?For the past 60 years, 50% of marriages have ended in divorce.
So what?s the difference between that?(divorce)?and two people dating, then breaking up?
Well, for one,?If you?re married, I hear you get guilt-free sex.?But then, if you?re married.?And get divorced ? it?s a little more messy?than if you were just dating and then broke up.?I mean, there?s no guarantee it?ll be more or less emotionally painful.?But if you get divorced, it doesn?t just mess the two ex-partners up,
It messes up the children,?And the couple?s relationships with friends,?And oftentimes, job performance and church attendance drop significantly.
And too often, due in part to a divorce, women and children are thrown into poverty. Besides, one might argue, getting marriage can introduce all this (perhaps undue) pressure! I mean, it?s a hell of a commitment to say, ?I love you ?til death do us part [or, if you?re Mormon, forever].? That sort of long-term commitment takes, I guess, a lot of love and a lot of trust and a lot of, well, commitment. It?s a risk.?But it no doubt has its rewards.
Still, I keep thinking, if only the pressure weren?t there ? I mean, people lose A LOT of sleep worrying about this commitment, whether they?ll be able to keep it, or whether they?ll be able to keep on keeping it, or if their spouse will keep on trusting the other to keep it ? because you never know how life will go. And there are a lot of pretty, smart, competent, kind people out there.
So how can you say, ?There?s just ONE??
Anyways, aren?t we supposed to love EVERYBODY??How are we supposed to do that, if we?ve got to expend so much energy on loving just this one person extra-specially, and not worrying about it, or worrying that the other person?s worrying about it, or worrying that the continued commitment will make you lame or boring or stale or less you.?At the very least, we can all agree, it sounds like hard work.?And if marriage is so worth it, and already such hard work,?I would think it?d be nice if there were a little less social pressure.?A little less pressure on those who are thinking they at least right now (even though they?re getting up in years) would prefer for whatever reason not to get married.
A little less pressure on those already married thinking they might get a divorce.
A little less pressure on those considering getting married that they keep it forever. Or else!
A little less pressure on those wanting to get married, but perhaps wanting a partnership that looks a little bit maybe somewhat ?unorthodox.? (Again, assuming marriages are tough, intimate, totally-worth-it-but-so-engaging sorts of things, I would think it better if we left each couple to figure out what their marriage will look like for them than pressure them to make it look like ours, especially if ours isn?t doing so hot as it is.)
And, in light of that, I think it?d be in order to put a little less pressure on those maybe thinking about marriage but also thinking they might like getting a little intimate first with somebody special without yet worrying about the bonds and ties of the life-long commitment we commonly call marriage.?I mean, I?d be the first to admit, I LOVE weddings. They?re some of the happiest occasions life has to offer, and not just for the couple newly wed.?And I?m not saying I like divorce, nor that I like it when couples break commitments of any kind.?It?s sad, and painful, and can mess you up forever.?But it doesn?t have to.?And all I?m saying is, if we eased up the pressure a little bit, the marriages that do last, might last a little longer, and be a little happier.
And the marriages that don?t last??Well, it?s my hope the two ex-partners, rather than feel heartbroken, anxious, lonely AND socially condemned, they?d feel a little more loved. Because hey! No pressure, dude (or dudette). God?s got you covered.?He is, after all, Love. And Love never fails.

Sam Kass, a White House Chef and a policy advisor for first lady Michelle Obama's nutrition program, works the room at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.
Depending on your point of view, Sam Kass is either parroting the soft-drink companies, or he?s a realist who epitomizes the pragmatic approach to childhood obesity of his boss, First Lady Michelle Obama.
Kass, who rose from the Obama family?s personal chef during their Chicago days to Assistant White House Chef to Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives at the White House, was a keynote speaker on the first day of the national Childhood Obesity Conference in San Diego.
Echoing a crucial strategy of the first lady?s ?Let?s Move!? campaign, Kass said child obesity ?will not be solved unless we really work with and involve the private sector.?
It was more than a year ago that Michelle Obama launched ?Let?s Move!? as a campaign to bring pediatric obesity levels back to 1970s levels. That would be about 5 percent, a long way from the 16 percent the level is now. One-third of children are overweight or obese.
The campaign seeks to bring healthy foods to poorer neighborhoods by adding more supermarkets and farmer?s markets. But its initial successes involved prodding food manufacturers like Kraft to reduce sodium and sugar in packaged foods. Walmart also announced it had convinced its food suppliers to reformulate their products to make them healthier, as well as reduce prices for fruits and vegetables at its superstores that sell produce.
Some advocates have criticized the approach as being too lenient on the food companies, but Kass emphasized that companies have to be part of the solution. He told the 1,800 or so attendees at the conference luncheon ? many of them dietitians, educators, public-health managers, academics and health-care providers ? that ?we need to redefine who we deem to be stakeholders? in the debate.
Kass said companies should be given credit when they offer to make improvements, even if those efforts fall a bit short. If they get ?70 percent of the way, and they get creamed for not going 100 percent of the way,? those companies won?t have an incentive to make their products healthier, he said.
He added that the first lady believes that the issue can?t be solved with ?a piece of legislation? or ?a presidential decree.?
During a question-and-answer period, an employee at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco suggested the White House get behind an effort to ban sodas in hospitals. Kass said focusing on one food item doesn?t bring a comprehensive solution to a complex problem.
?This issue is not caused by one drink,? Kass said, echoing arguments made by the soda industry when a California soda tax was proposed. ?It?s about a much broader food landscape.?
Kass praised the MyFoodPlate.Gov campaign by the USDA, a reboot of the outdated, confusing Food Pyramid. He said the public isn?t served by ?conflicting sources and messages? on nutrition that ?turn people off.?
He urged the attendees to coalesce around a single message. The USDA soon will begin offering quarterly messages surrounding the new MyPlate design, beginning with this simple precept: Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables during a meal.

Steve Rixon named new Australia fielding coach
Melbourne, Jun 2: Former Australia test wicketkeeper Steve Rixon was appointed as the national team''s fielding coach today.
The 57-year-old Rixon replaced American Mike Young, who is also fielding coach for the Deccan Chargers of the Indian Premier League.
Rixon, who played 13 tests and six one-dayers for Australia during the late 1970s and early 1980s, will join Australia on its upcoming tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa, acting Cricket Australia chief executive Michael Brown said.
"I am thrilled with this appointment and look forward to working with the Australian team over the next two tours," Rixon said in a statement.
"Fielding skills play such an important role in the modern game and often proves the difference between winning and losing."
Since retiring as a player in 1988, Rixon has coached New Zealand, Australian state team New South Wales and Indian Cricket League side Hyderabad Heroes, and is currently fielding coach of the IPL''s Chennai Super Kings.
"I feel my experience firstly as a player and, more importantly, a successful coach across the world can help many of these young Australian players, together with the outstanding group of assistants (coach) Tim Nielsen has at his disposal," Rixon said.
Brown said Rixon''s input to the team would be "invaluable."
"The group of coaches we now have in place has a great blend of coaching expertise and cricket experience to benefit this developing Australian side, and Steve has an important role to play as we move forward," he said.

Afghan hospital suicide bomb toll rises (AFP)
KABUL (AFP) ? The toll from a suicide car bombing at an Afghan hospital rose to 38 Sunday, a local official said, days after President Barack Obama said 10,000 US troops would leave the country this year.
Many of the victims in Logar province, about 75 kilometres (45 miles) south of the capital Kabul, were women and children who had been at the hospital's maternity ward, and as many as 50 people were also wounded.
The devastating attack came just weeks before international forces are due to start handing over responsibility for security to their Afghan counterparts in seven areas of the country.
An eyewitness described horrific scenes of victims on fire and body parts scattered in all directions after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) blew up in the remote district of Azra, close to the border with Pakistan, on Saturday.
Following initial official confusion over the death toll, local officials said Sunday the figures of those killed and injured had risen overnight.
Provincial health director Mohammad Zaref Nayebkhail said that 38 people were killed and 50 wounded.
"There are differences in figures given by other government sources because soon after the blast, villagers took some of the dead bodies home immediately and they were not counted," he said.
"Some of the bodies were later taken out of the collapsed rooms and debris. Some of the wounded also died later. We have counted all of them."
District police chief Bakhtiar Gul put the death toll at 33, with another 45 wounded.
One man who lives near the hospital, Abdul Rahman, told AFP he lost seven relatives in the explosion.
"Seven members of my family including three women and two children went to that hospital," he said in tears. "I was at home, then I heard a big explosion. When I rushed to the site, I saw many dead and injured people.
"Many of them were burning, on fire. There were body parts everywhere. My family is dead, I can't find them, they are under the rubble."
The Taliban denied they were behind the attack, with spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid saying: "We condemn this attack on a hospital... whoever has done this wants to defame the Taliban."
UN special representative Staffan de Mistura called the blast "despicable".
"Much of the damage was in the maternity ward of the hospital, and many of those killed and injured were women and children," he said in a statement.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan also stressed that attacks on hospitals were prohibited under international humanitarian law.
In a separate incident on Saturday, an eight-year-old Afghan girl was killed when insurgents detonated a bomb in a bag which they had given her to take to police nearby, the interior ministry said Sunday.
The incident, in which there were no other casualties, happened in the southern province of Uruzgan.
"The child, pure-hearted and in good faith, took the bag and moved towards the police vehicle," the ministry's statement said.
"As she got close to the police vehicle, the enemy detonated the bomb by remote control, killing the innocent child."
And in northwestern Badghi province two Spanish soldiers were killed and another three injured when their armoured vehicle hit a roadside bomb, Spain's defence ministry said on Sunday.
The incidents came at the end of a week when Obama announced that 33,000 US troops would leave Afghanistan by the end of next summer.
All foreign combat forces are due to pull out of the country by the end of 2014 when Afghan forces assume responsibility for security nationwide. There are currently up to 150,000 foreign forces in Afghanistan, including about 99,000 from the United States.
Some analysts fear that Afghan security forces may struggle to contain the Taliban-led insurgency, which has hit record levels of violence after nearly 10 years, as withdrawals begin.
The blast in Logar was the second major attack in Afghanistan in two days.
On Friday, 10 people were killed by a bicycle bomb which exploded in a busy bazaar in the Khad Abad district of the northern province of Kunduz.
Militants in Afghanistan frequently target the Afghan police, army and other government employees as well as foreign forces in their near decade-long insurgency.
But civilians are the biggest casualties in the war, with 2,777 killed last year, according to the United Nations. That was the biggest total since the war started in 2001.

Wall Street falls as anxiety mounts over euro-zone debt (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks headed for three days of losses on Friday on worries about the Italian banking sector and Greece's austerity plan, but the S&P 500 managed to hold its 200-day moving average in a sign of market strength.
Italian banks UniCredit SpA (CRDI.MI) and Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP.MI) fell sharply on concerns about their capital positions alongside uncertainty about the euro-zone crisis. Trading in the banks' shares was briefly suspended.
Greece's government faced an electorate vehemently opposed to austerity measures that must be passed in parliament next week to avert default. But progress is being made in persuading banks to take part in a second bailout.
"They (politicians) may not believe that financial markets are as sensitive to their decisions as they actually are, and there is a worry that somewhere along the line, some political vote goes against the market," said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist of the ConvergEx Group in New York.
The S&P 500 remained within striking distance of its 200-day moving average -- a line that has been tested twice in recent trading and has so far acted as a springboard for stocks. The level was at 1,263.49.
"Every time you test a resistance or support level, you make it weaker," Colas said. "It's almost like a piece of metal. Every time you hit it, it grows more fragile and that's why people are really worried the third or fourth time."
The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) dropped 82.04 points, or 0.68 percent, to 11,967.96. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) fell 10.82 points, or 0.84 percent, to 1,272.68. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) lost 26.51 points, or 0.99 percent, to 2,660.24.
The KBW Banks Index (.BKX) lost 0.8 percent and the S&P Financial Sector Index (.GSPF) shed 0.7 percent.
On Thursday, the market welcomed Greece's agreement to a five-year austerity plan.
The euro declined against the dollar for a third straight session on worries Greece's parliament might not pass austerity measures needed for the country to secure more bailout funds.
In the latest economic data, new orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured products, known as durable goods, increased 1.9 percent in May after dropping 2.7 percent in April as bookings for transportation equipment rebounded strongly.
Oracle Corp (ORCL.O), off 3.9 percent at $31.21, was the biggest drag on both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indexes (.NDX) a day after the world's No. 3 software maker posted disappointing results, especially in hardware sales. Oracle's results sparked concerns about a bigger slowdown in technology spending.
Micron Technology Inc (MU.O) tumbled 13.8 percent to $7.27 after the memory chipmaker recorded results below expectations late Thursday.

Gay Marriage passed in the NY State Senate last night. The only thing upsetting about this is that the majority of the representatives that voted No are from Upstate America. As my humble musings on this forum generally heep praise on our glorious nook of the world, this gives me pause to ponder. I guess that a byproduct of the old timey charm and working class glory of the region are vestiges of a brand of social conservatism that unsettles me.
I am ever the optimist. I believe that the true nature of younger Upstate Americans is to let all live as they please. I believe that this will shine through in the coming years and the passing of legislation like this is a harbinger of things to come. I think it is important that we always remember that the country (and the world) are watching our fair state. Upstate NY (not just LI, NYC, and the Southern Counties) should always put its toes on the compassionate and just side of line.
Anyhow, now some levity.
Firstly I believe there shall be a great increase in the use of the word "Trousseau" because it is a good word and it is fancy.

Madeleine Peyroux impressed on her 1996 debut "Dreamland" singing early jazz and blues standards with a tone uncannily reminiscent of Billie Holiday, re-emerged as an innovative interpreter of more contemporary fare by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and others on 2004's best-selling "Careless Love" and established herself as a songwriter on "Bare Bones" (2009) with all original material.
"Standing on the Rooftop" finds her exploring new sounds, working with a new producer, Craig Street (Norah Jones, k.d. lang), and new songwriting partners, including ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, avant-garde guitarist Marc Ribot and country-inspired jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman. She goes for an edgier, rootsier Americana sound that is less overtly jazz oriented, adding guests such as pianist Allen Toussaint and bassist Me'shell Ndegeocello.
The covers include a recast "Martha My Dear" that turns the whimsical Beatles song into a slower, reflective romance tune with Peyroux's soft vocals backed by Ribot's folksy banjo plucking, while her haunting version of blues legend Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain" has a menacing, rumbling backdrop of violin, guitars and keyboards.
Highlights among the originals include the title track, with tense interplay between Peyroux's laid-back vocals and Ribot's throbbing electric guitar riffs; "The Things I've Seen Today," co-written with Scheinman, with its twangy guitar sounding like the theme to an old Western; and the whimsical "Don't Pick a Fight With a Poet," about the pen being mightier than the sword, with a bouncy strummed guitar accompaniment. There are some misses, such as the extremely slow-paced "Fickle Dove" and the meandering "Meet Me In Rio."
Peyroux's fans should find much to admire on this album by an artist whose creative drive won't allow her to settle into any predictable comfort zone.

Afghan, Pakistan presidents in Iran summit (AFP)
TEHRAN (AFP) ? Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai held a three-way summit with Iran on Friday ahead of attending an anti-terrorism conference, state news agency IRNA reported.
Zardari, Karzai and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad discussed "ways of battling terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking," IRNA said.
A statement posted on the Iranian presidency website said the three "expressed concern over a rising lack of security, extremism and terrorism, and insisted on the need for cooperation to combat these phenomena."
The tripartite summit is being held amid announcements by the United States that it will draw down by 33,000 its contingent of 99,000 troops in Afghanistan by the end of summer 2012.
Several hundred French soldiers have also been recalled from Afghanistan recently, while Britain and Germany, which have the largest presence there after the United States, have also declared their intention to reduce their contingents by the end of the year.
"The Afghan people wants the departure of foreign forces, and therefore Iran and Pakistan can play an important role in establishing a durable peace in Afghanistan," the Iranian presidency website quoted Karzai as saying.
Ahmadinejad agreed that all three nations must "cooperate closely on security matters," it said.
Zardari was quoted as saying that Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan must boost ties and cooperation because all three countries "are the main victims of terrorism and war."
Iran has always been hostile to the presence of NATO forces in neighbouring Afghanistan, saying this strengthened terrorist groups such as the Taliban and Al-Qaeda more than it weakened them.
Tehran itself suffers from the activities of armed Sunni Muslim group Jundallah around its border with Pakistan and Afghanistan. Jundallah is on the United States' list of outlawed terrorist groups.
On Saturday Zardari and Karzai will attend an international anti-terrorism conference alongside Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Iranian media reported.
All three arrived in the Iranian capital on Friday afternoon for the gathering, which will also be attended by other nations as observers.
Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court, which has issued two arrest warrants on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide in the Darfur region, where a bloody conflict has raged for eight years.
Iran, which is on Washington's list of state sponsors of terrorism, regularly accuses Israel and the US of plotting terrorist attacks against its territory.
