Bride giving her new husband the perfect wedding present - a kidney

She will go under the knife in a few months after it turned out she is a blood match for her diabetic husband

Love match: Lee and Lisa Parcel
Love match: Lee and Lisa Parcel

Wales Online

A self-confessed wimp when it comes to pain is giving her new husband the ultimate gift ? a kidney.

Lisa Parcel, 27, will go under the knife in a few months after it turned out she is a blood match for Lee, 33.

Diabetic Lee has been on dialysis for two years after his kidneys failed and also had a stroke last year.

After learning how to walk again, Lee recovered and can now administer his own blood-filtering dialysis treatment at home.

Now Lisa, who he married in June, is giving him ?the perfect wedding present?.

Lee added: "There is nothing I can say or do to thank my wife for a new life. There's no repayment for that.

"She is going through all of this for me and I will never be able to show my thanks enough.

"I will just have to look after it as much as possible."

Mental health nurse Lisa, of Pentre, Rhondda, said: "In all honesty, I'm a bit of a wimp - any sort of pain normally scares me.

"But this is different. This operation will benefit both of us as Lee will be able to live a more normal life."

An NHS spokeswoman said: "One of the biggest risks of receiving a donated kidney is that your immune system - your body's natural defence against infection - will mistake the donated kidney for a foreign object, such as a viral or bacterial infection.

"If this happens, your immune system will attempt to destroy the kidney. People can function normally on one working kidney."

Bengals WR Hawkins in cast for 10 days

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Bengals receiver Andrew Hawkins will wear a cast for 10 days to try to heal his sprained left ankle, making it doubtful he'll be ready for the season opener.

Coach Marvin Lewis said Saturday that Hawkins will be evaluated again when the cast is removed and the club will have a better idea how long he'll be sidelined.

"It allows the opportunity to make sure we don't inadvertently injure it more," Lewis said. "It gives it a chance to settle down and begin to mend. He's very optimistic that he'll be ready to go at some point here, so we'll see.

"At least for the next 10 days or so he's going to be in this cast. Then we'll have a little better update after that."

If he's not ready for the opener Sept. 8 in Chicago, he could be placed on injured reserve with an opportunity to return at some point during the season. Teams can designate one player on injured reserve as available to return. Otherwise, a player is out for the season.

"Right now he has a chance to be a candidate for that at this point," Lewis said.

Hawkins was Cincinnati's second-leading wide receiver last year with 51 catches for 533 yards and four touchdowns. He sprained the ankle while trying to make a catch during practice on Aug. 1 and was carted off the field.

All-Pro receiver A.J. Green has been sidelined since he bruised his left knee while trying to make an acrobatic sideline catch in the opening practice of camp on July 25. Green didn't accompany the team to Atlanta, where Cincinnati won its preseason opener 34-10 on Thursday night.

Green didn't practice on Saturday in Cincinnati. Lewis said he's improving and it's possible he could return to practice next week. The Bengals play the Titans at Paul Brown Stadium next Saturday night.

Also on Saturday, the Bengals signed guard Otis Hudson, a second-year player who was on their practice squad in 2010 and on the roster for seven games last season. The Bengals drafted Hudson in the fifth round in 2010. He has never appeared in a game.

Cooper: Union Gospel Mission surviving

The man who stopped by Union Gospel Mission in June had read a story in the Times Free Press about the 63-year-old organization?s plight. It was out of funds, in danger of closing, and he and his wife wanted to help.

He handed the Rev. Jon Rector a wad of papers, said he didn?t need a thank-you and left without leaving his last name or address. When the faith-based mission?s executive director looked at the papers later, he found money orders totaling $5,000.

Rector says that couple?s gift and those from many others will allow Union Gospel Mission to stay open. The organization received donations of around $45,000 after a fundraising letter went out in late May, he says.

The letter was no semiannual going-out-of-business plea, Rector says. Without an influx of funds, Union Gospel Mission would have closed in September.

?Something had to happen,? he says, ?[because] we did not have the resources to remain open. God definitely made it known to us that we will be staying open, and that he is faithful.?

The funds, more than three times what Union Gospel Mission usually collects in summer months, will allow the mission to get caught up on its operating expenses and pay a little of its debt. But it?s hardly out of the woods. Expenses, Rector says, already had been cut ?to the bone.?

Rector said in June that the organization needed $50,000 to $100,000 to continue. He is hoping the money that has come in will carry it until the final quarter of the year, when it receives the bulk of its donations.

?We?ve solved the problem for this summer,? he says. ?We have to do something to get ready for next summer. I don?t know what form [that will take]. We have to sustain what we did this summer.?

Rector says about 60 percent of the latest funds came from current donors, 30 percent from new donors and 10 percent from reactivated givers.

In the near future, Rector says the mission will begin making slots available for homeless men to join the residential recovery program. Because of the lack of money, though, he hasn?t made any slots available for months.

?If we bring new people in,? he says, ?we?re doing what we do. And that?s a return-on-investment scenario. We do this to make us viable. This is not to provide me with a job; that?s not my calling.?

Rector says he?s turned away a minimum of five guys over the last few months.

?The needs are not going away anytime soon,? he says. ?Regardless of the polls and pundits, the economy is not making any major improvements. So it?ll lag or sag if it does not continue to improve.?

Sometime in what Rector hopes will be the not-too-distant future, Union Gospel Mission can re-establish an emergency shelter.

?We?ve always been committed to [that],? he said. ?It?s the No. 1 most-needed thing. We?re trying to lay out a course [of] how could we do it. That?s where the most good will be done for people who need our help.?

In the meantime, he will hope for more angels like the man with the money orders ? ?one of those completely selfless acts ? what was laid on his heart? ? and will stand on verses such as 1 Corinthians 16:13-14: ?Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love? ? which he says has been a source of strength in recent days.

Taiwan not likely to dig China's plan for $80B tunnel connection, say experts

China's latest plan to link the mainland to Taiwan, either by bridge or via a tunnel that would be triple the size of the one under the English Channel, is sure to heighten long-simmering tensions between the two countries.

China, which has always claimed dominion over Taiwan, recently approved a State Council plan for a highway that would connect Beijing to Taipei, which would stretch 1,200 miles, including a 111-mile span over or under the straits that separate the nations. Such a project has been discussed for at least a decade, but was recently approved as part of China's National Highway Network Plan for 2013-2030, according to the South China Morning Post.

"The government and most of the people in Taiwan are less enthusiastic.?

- Bonnie Glaser, Center for Strategic and International Studies

?Construction of such a bridge would increase the anxiety in Taiwan about the potential for greater pressure from Beijing to engage in political talks about reunification,? Bonnie Glaser, a senior advisor and China Studies Chair for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told FoxNews.com.?

It?s not clear whether the span across the Taiwan Strait would be a bridge or tunnel, but the latter is the more likely option, according to a report from Stratfor. It could cost as much as $80 billion and would be three times the length of the Channel Tunnel connecting the United Kingdom and France.

Taiwan has been estranged from China since the 1950s, and the Taiwan Strait "represents the most physically formidable and symbolically inaccessible barrier to Beijing's objective of eventual reunification with the island," according to Stratfor. At times, military tensions between China and the U.S. allied Taiwan have reached the point where fears of war breaking out were legitimate.

But tensions have eased in recent years, with Taiwan taking an ?economic first, politics later? approach with the mainland while Beijing has struck a conciliatory tone. In July, the two nations agreed to a plan to supply water from the mainland to Kinmen with a new pipeline. But a span between the two countries could give China a beachhead that would allow it to more easily force unification, say experts.

"The plan has been considered by Beijing for several years,? Glaser said. ?It is envisioned as a means to promote further economic integration, which the mainland hopes will enable eventual political unification.?The government and most of the people in Taiwan are less enthusiastic.?

An undersea tunnel connects the mainland?s Fujian province with northern Taiwan. The part of the strait chosen for the crossing was due to the short distance across the strait. However, due to a staggering price tag and unresolved technical problems, it could take the next 20-30 years to come to fruition, experts say.

Larry David to Feherty: 'I could be speaking foreign languages' if not for golf

No one loves Golf?s lows as much as Seinfeld co-creator Larry David, the neurotic raconteur and Riviera member, who appears on David Fehery's Feherty show on Golf Channel next week to discuss the game on which he?s wasted so much time. In a snippet of the interview that you can watch above, David tells his host of Golf?s unmatched humiliations and muses on all that he might have accomplished had he spent his energies on other things. ?I could be speaking foreign languages. I could be a concert pianist,? David says. Instead, he plays Golf, and ?all I do is get unhappy.? Not that he?s just busy berating himself. David is on the publicity wheel these days to help drum up interest in a new film he stars in. Clear History , the story of a marketing executive who misses out on millions in an electric-car venture, airs on HBO on Aug. 10. The Feherty episode with Larry David will be shown on Golf Channel at 9 p.m. on Monday. ? ...

Gift and loyalty cards out: Is Google Wallet next on the Google chopping block?

Gift and loyalty cards out: Is Google Wallet next on the Google chopping block?

Google is known for shutting down services at will with Google Reader being the latest casualty. Google sent emails to existing Google Wallet customers stating that gift and loyalty card support will be pulled out from Google Wallet on 21 August.

After I discovered all the PayPass locations I could use with Google Wallet I started using it regularly. Google slowly opened up Wallet to any credit or debit card and then added loyalty and reward cards to the mix. With the upcoming removal of loyalty and gift cards, lack of hardware support on their newest device, and lack of carrier support for Google Wallet while backing ISIS it looks to me like Google Wallet may be one of the next services put out to pasture.

I used Google Wallet on a Nexus devices, but very few other Android phones I tried after that even supported Wallet. Much of that was due to lack of carrier support too. As a person who likes to demonstrate functions on their phones, I enjoyed the experience of tapping to pay for items and then showing it off to the clerk at the store. My phone is also always with me while I find carrying a wallet to be an inconvenience.

The addition of gift and loyalty cards was great, but at the time it was released I did not have an Android smartphone I used that supported that. I would love to have lightened my physical wallet with these cards integrated into my phone and actually I do that now through the FidMe application on multiple platforms (Android, WP8, iOS) since Google Wallet didn't work out.

ISIS has yet to make its full debut outside of a few test areas and with Apple not yet supporting NFC the move to mobile wallets is moving at a snails pace. Samsung is rolling out their Samsung Wallet solution on select Galaxy devices and it looks to be a iOS Passbook clone, complete WITHOUT NFC support.

The mobile wallet space is full of these fragmented solutions and until someone can step up and promote a consolidated message I don't think we will ever see any of them reach the ideal mobile wallet solution some of us want.

CABAZON, Calif. (AP) - Southern California's destructive wildfire has grown to 25 square miles, but containment has also increased.

Fire officials say the fire in rugged mountains 90 miles east of Los Angeles expanded by 2,000 acres overnight but is 25 percent surrounded Friday morning.

The fire has destroyed 26 rural homes and forced hundreds of residents to flee since it broke out Wednesday afternoon.

The cause remains under investigation.

Fox Sports gets U.S. Open in 12-year deal

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) ? Fox Sports is in as the broadcast partner for the U.S. Open starting in 2015. Johnny Miller appears to be out.

In a surprising announcement Wednesday evening, the U.S. Golf Association said it has signed a 12-year multimedia deal with Fox network and Fox Sports 1 to be the domestic broadcast partner for the U.S. Open and other USGA championships.

NBC Sports had been televising the U.S. Open since 1995 at Shinnecock Hills, with Miller as its shoot-from-hip analyst who became as much of the show as the golf itself.

"It was a big bummer," Miller told The Associated Press from his home in Utah. "For some reason, I told Dan Hicks at the U.S. Open this year, 'I don't think we're going to keep the U.S. Open.' I just had a hunch it would be ESPN or Fox that stepped in and made a high bid. I know we tried.

"I feel bad for the USGA in a way that money was more important than basically a good golf crew."

The deal is for 12 years and runs through 2026. The first U.S. Open for Fox will be from Chambers Bay outside Seattle.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

NBC's last U.S. Open will be next year at Pinehurst No. 2 ? the U.S. Women's Open will be played on the same course the following week.

"This is an exciting and remarkable day for the USGA, as our partnership with the Fox Sports is a game-changer for our organization and for the game of golf," USGA President Glen Nager said. "The game is evolving and requires bold and unique approaches on many levels, and FOX shares our vision to seek fresh thinking and innovative ideas to deliver championship golf. This partnership will help us to better lead and serve the game in new and exciting ways."

Along with NBC Sports televising the final two rounds ? and two-hour segments on Thursday and Friday ? ESPN showed the two opening rounds. NBC is under the same umbrella as Comcast, which also owns Golf Channel.

Under the deal, Fox Sports will deliver 146 hours of USGA golf. That includes at least 70 hours of its three biggest events ? the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open. The other hours will be spent on amateur competitions, such as the U.S. Amateur and the new U.S. National Fourball Championship.

"It was the highlight of my year of work for me," Miller said. "The U.S. Open has always been the tournament. It's a big bummer for me and Dan Hicks."

Fox did not say what kind of broadcast team it would have for the USGA championships. Miller said it was unlikely he would go to Fox even if offered a chance. He said his contract with NBC runs through 2015.

NBC has three FedEx Cup playoff events, the Ryder Cup, the Florida swing and Houston Open leading up to the Masters, and The Players Championship.

"I don't know what they're going to do," Miller said about Fox. "You can't just fall out of a tree and do the U.S. Open. I guess the money was more important than the performance. No way they can step in and do the job we were doing. It's impossible. There's just no way. I wish Fox the very best."

Man arrested for break-in attempt at Kid Rock's home

By Gillian Spear, Writer, NBC News

Police arrested a man who attempted to break into musician Kid Rock?s Detroit-area home.

The 43-year-old man was seen on security cameras Wednesday afternoon, ramming the gate to Kid Rock?s Clarkston property with his white van. He then exited his van and tried, but failed, to break into the property, according to the Oakland County Sheriff?s Office. The man was on crutches.?

On Friday, Kid Rock, born Robert Ritchie,?wrote on his website that he would be offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with information that could lead to the perpetrator's arrest. Authorities, however, did not seem to think the culprit would be hard to find.

?Clearly, the combination of this vehicle and the person on crutches driving it should make it fairly obvious to someone who knows this individual,? said Oakland County Sheriff Michael McCabe in a press release.

The man was arrested at his home in Independence Township, Mich., on Saturday morning -- his 1994 white Ford van parked in the driveway.?

Authorities said the arrest came after recieving two tips but did not say if the individuals who provided these tips received the reward from Kid Rock.

In the post on his website, the musician made it clear that he does not take security lightly and warned, ?I am an avid hunter and marksman and I will not hesitate to shoot anyone who has myself or family in fear for our?lives.?

An arraignment will likely take place Monday. The man is meanwhile being held at the Oakland County Jail.

U.S. issues global travel alert, cites al Qaeda threat

By Arshad Mohammed and Tabassum Zakaria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States issued a worldwide travel alert on Friday warning Americans that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.

The State Department travel alert was based on the same intelligence that prompted it to close 21 U.S. embassies and consulates on Sunday, August 4, chiefly those in the Muslim world, a U.S. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula," its statement said.

"Current information suggests that al Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," it added, saying the travel alert would expire on August 31.

Among the most prominent of al Qaeda's affiliates is Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a Yemen-based group whose attempted attacks included the Christmas Day 2009 attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

U.S. security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the threat was related to AQAP but there was not a specific target. They also said that it was aimed at Western interests, an assessment later confirmed by the top U.S. military officer.

"The intent is to attack Western, not just U.S. interests," General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told ABC News in an interview to be broadcast on its "This Week" program on Sunday.

"There is a significant threat stream and we're reacting to it," he said, adding that the kind of potential attack was "unspecified."

Britain said it would close its embassy in Yemen on Sunday and Monday. "We are particularly concerned about the security situation in the final days of Ramadan and into Eid," Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement, referring to the Muslim holy month which ends on Wednesday.

'SOME SPECIFICITY'

A U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the threat was serious and that the U.S. government had reacted in such a dramatic manner "because we have some specificity but not enough."

On Thursday, the State Department said U.S. embassies that would normally be open on Sunday - chiefly those in the Muslim world - would be closed that day because of security concerns, adding that they might be shut for a longer period.

The embassies in the following countries will be closed: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Mauritania, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The consulates in Arbil, Iraq; Dhahran and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates will also be shut.

The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, which is normally closed to the public on Sunday, said all its facilities would be shut on Sunday and workers not essential for the building's security had been told not to come in.

It also said the American Center in Jerusalem and the Haifa Consular Agency would be closed on Sunday.

While the U.S. State Department routinely releases what it describes as a "Worldwide Caution" warning U.S. citizens of the general potential danger of attacks around the world, Friday's travel alert was based on more specific information, said one U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The previous "Worldwide Caution" was issued on February 19.

U.S. officials declined to provide additional details about the intelligence that led them to close the diplomatic missions and to issue the worldwide travel alert.

However, a second U.S. official said there was no information on a specific target, which was the reason for the broad alert.

The chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Ed Royce, said on CNN's "New Day" that he and several other lawmakers met two days ago with Vice President Joe Biden to discuss the threat.

Later on MSNBC, Royce said: "I believe that it is probably now prudent, given the fact that, in this case, we do have this intelligence, to take this step to make certain that we have fully protected our embassy personnel."

Friendship Day: Facebook replaces friendship bands

NEW DELHI: Remember how Friendship Day became a fad after "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" released in 1998? The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer not only popularised it but also made colourful friendship bands the rage. But 13 years later, impressive e-gifting options have taken over, say trade experts.

Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August every year and this year on Aug 4.

"For the last few years, SMSs, e-gifting options and social networking sites have taken over from friendship bands and greeting cards. We hardly get customers for friendship bands. They rather ask for useful products like pen drives, clothes, books and handbags," Nikhil Tyagi of Gift Gallery, told IANS.

Retailers say that online customers have increased manifold over the years because of the comfort and convenience e-commerce websites offer.

Tarana Ahmed, manager (Corporate Communications) at Ferns N Petals (FNP), said: "The digital world has indeed created a great challenge for the offline stores."

There has been a major change in the gifting habits as people now splurge on sending personalised and unconventional items to their friends or loved ones.

"There are two things that have changed about gifting over the years. Firstly, it has become more personal and special; and secondly it's becoming more fun, offbeat and extremely out-of-the-box," said Mayank Bhangadia, co-founder of www.giveter.com.

Another factor that made e-gifting sought after is that there is no time constraint, Bhangadia's partner Avinash Saxena pointed out.

"We believe that gifts have become a lot more creative, personalised and convenient. What allows us to get into such a personal space and make the experience so much more fulfilling is the fact that we are an e-commerce brand, available throughout the day and night to make gifting as special as you want it to be," Saxena added.

There is another school of thought that believes in celebrating friendship throughout the year.

Now, schoolchildren or college-goers don't wait for Friendship Day to make their best buddies feel special. They prefer sending gifts online whenever they want to express their feelings.

"I and my friends don't buy friendship bands any more. We all have accounts on Facebook and we keep sending customised gifts and animated greeting cards to each other. Online, you have hundred options, it's much more better, cute and free of cost," Nikita Singh, a class 12 student, said.

Nowadays, youngsters also bond over movies and parties.

Raghav Sachdeva, 20, a Delhi University student, said: "I really don't have to wait for friendship day to make my best friend feel special. I can do that whenever I want. My friends and I don't really like gifting to each other. We usually party or go out for movies and share the bills."

Another college-goer, Ishan Saxena, 21, said: "It's not about Friendship Day, it's about spending time with your best friends. It's always good to be with your best friends, no matter what place, date or time. When I was in school, my friends and I used to give friendship bands but not any more. We rather post pictures, a poem or a testimonial for each other on Facebook."

With youngsters spending more time surfing the internet, online and offline segments work hand-in-hand like a symbiotic relationship at FNP, said Ahmed.

"For example, when we get an order at fnp.com, we transfer it to the FNP store closest to the address of the recipient. Also, to cater to the increasing demands of online customers, especially on occasion like Friendship Day, along with the options of customised bouquet, we have also introduced a varied range of gifts and hampers that suits the trend and taste of the youth," she explained.

Oil lobby leads California spending as ocean fracking proceeds

Oil lobby leads California spending as ocean fracking proceeds

by Dan Bacher

Some may consider California to be a "green" state and the "environmental leader" of the nation, but that delusion is quickly dispelled once one actually looks at who spends the most on lobbying in California - the oil industry.

The Western States Petroleum Association spent the most on lobbying in Sacramento in the first six months of 2013 of any interest group, according to quarterly documents released by the California Secretary of State.

The association spent $1,023,069.78 in the first quarter and $1,285,720.17 in the second quarter, a total of $2,308,789.95, to lobby legislators and other state officials.

Because of the enormous influence exerted by the group and the oil companies themselves in the Capitol, all but one bill to regulate or ban fracking was defeated in the Legislature this year. The only bill that passed through the Legislature was the weak bill to "regulate" fracking sponsored by State Senator Fran Pavley.

The association's members are a "who's who" of big oil companies, including BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillip, ExxonMobil, Navajo Refining Company, Noble Energy Company, Occidental Oil and Gas Corporation, Shell Oil Products US, Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company, U.S. Oil & Refining Company, Venoco, Inc. and many others.

The top 20 interest groups who spent the most money in the first six months included labor unions, the California Chamber of Commerce, Chevron and health care corporations. (http://blogs.sacbee.com/capitolalertlatest/)

The latest report on spending on lobbying emerged as the Associated Press revealed that companies prospecting for oil off California's coast have used the controversial practice of fracking (hydraulic fracturing) on at least a dozen occasions to force open cracks beneath the seabed.

Now regulators are investigating whether the environmentally destructive practice, one that threatens fish and wildlife populations in the state's marine waters, should require a separate permit and be subject to stricter environmental review. (http://www.mercurynews.com/california/ci_23789784/fracking-off-california-coast-draws-call-greater-regulation)

"Hundreds of pages of federal documents released by the government to The Associated Press and advocacy groups through the Freedom of Information Act show regulators have permitted fracking in the Pacific Ocean at least 12 times since the late 1990s, and have recently approved a new project," wrote AP reporters Jason Dearen and Alicia Chang.

"Companies are doing the offshore fracking -- which involves pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of salt water, sand and chemicals into undersea shale and sand formations -- to stimulate old existing wells into new oil production," they said.

Inexplicably missing from the mainstream media and even most "alternative" media reports on this issue is any mention of the fact that the President of the Western States Petroleum Association, Catherine Reheis-Boyd, CHAIRED the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Blue Ribbon Task Force that created the alleged "marine protected areas" that went in effect in Southern California waters in January 2012! She also served on the task forces to create "marine protected areas" on the Central Coast, North Central Coast and North Coast.

Without the shameless support of corporate "environmental" NGOs and state officials for Reheis-Boyd's role as a "marine guardian" in the creation of fake "marine reserves," the current expansion of fracking offshore wouldn't be possible. Grassroots environmentalists, Indian Tribe members, fishermen and advocates of democracy and transparency in government blasted the leadership role of the oil industry lobbyist in creating these "marine protected areas," but to no avail.

You see, the "marine protected areas" created under the privately-funded Initiative weren't true "marine protected areas" as the language of the landmark Marine Life Protection Act of 1999 called for. Under the leadership of ocean industrialists like Reheis-Boyd, a marina corporation executive, a coastal real estate developer and other corporate operates, marine protection was eviscerated in California.

These "marine protected areas" fail to protect the ocean from fracking, oil drilling and spills, pollution, wind and wave energy projects, corporate aquaculture, military testing and all human impacts other than fishing and gathering.

As I have pointed out in article after article, Reheis-Boyd apparently used her role as a state marine "protection" official to increase her network of influence in California politics to the point where the Western States Petroleum Association has become the most powerful corporate lobby in California. The association now has enormous influence over both state and federal regulators. (http://www.californiaprogressreport.com/site/lawsuit-filed-against-fracking-oil-lobbyist-says-its-safe)

Oil and gas companies spend more than $100 million a year to buy access to lawmakers in Washington and Sacramento, according to Stop Fooling California (http://www.stopfoolingca.org), an online and social media public education and awareness campaign that highlights oil companies' efforts to mislead and confuse Californians. The Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA) alone has spent more than $16 million lobbying in Sacramento since 2009.

Not only do the association and oil companies buy access to lawmakers, but they exert enormous control over Governor Jerry Brown, who is currently fast-tracking the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) to build the peripheral tunnels. The water destined for the tunnels will go to corporate agribusiness and oil companies seeking to expand fracking operations.

"A state senator has told me that Brown has cut a deal with the oil companies - he'll push fracking in exchange for campaign contributions to his 2012 Proposition 30 and his 2014 reelected," said RL Miller in her recent article on Daily Kos. (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/08/01/1228191/-Drowning-Sacramento-in-a-tide-of-oil)

She cited as evidence for a deal the $27,200.00 that Occidental Petroleum Corporation contributed to Brown's 2014 campaign. That's the maximum allowable under California law.

Miller also noted the roughly $1 million that oil companies - members of the Western States Petroleum Association - contributed to Brown's Proposition 30 campaign. These contributions include the following:

Aera Energy (Exxon-related), $125,000
Berry Petroleum, Denver, $35,000
Breitburn Operating, Houston, $21,250
CA State Pipe Trades Council (usually the pipeline union supports Big Oil), $100,000
Conoco Phillips, $25,000
E & B Natural Resources Management, Bakersfield, $20,000
MacPherson Oil Co., $50,000
Naftex, $10,000
Occidental Petroleum, $500,000
Plains Exploration & Production, $100,000
SoCal Pipe Trades Council, $125,000
Signal Hill Petroleum, $10,000
Vaquero Energy, $35,000
Venoco, $25,000

As the oil industry expands its role in California politics and environmental processes, there is no doubt that they are going to use every avenue they can to divert more water for fracking, including taking Delta water through the peripheral tunnels proposed under the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP). The industry will also use its power to expand fracking in the ocean unless Californians rise up and resist these plans.

Californians must question state officials and MLPA advocates about why they supported the leadership role of a big oil industry lobbyist in creating so-called "marine protected areas" off the California coast. After all, oil and water don't mix!

Berlusconi aides seeking presidential pardon

Italian former Premier Silvio Berlusconi waves to reporters as he leaves after attending a meeting with the People of Freedom party's lawmakers at the Lower Chamber in Rome, Friday, Aug. 2, 2013. Italy's former premier, Silvio Berlusconi, for the first time in decades of criminal prosecutions related to his media empire was definitively convicted of tax fraud and sentenced to prison by the nation's highest court, Judge Antonio Esposito, in reading the court's decision Thursday, declared Berlusconi's conviction and four-year prison term "irrevocable." He also ordered another court to review the length of a ban on public office ? the most incendiary element of the conviction because it threatens to interrupt, if not end, Berlusconi's political career. ROME (AP) ? Top Silvio Berlusconi aides are maneuvering to win a presidential pardon so the ex-premier can avoid a prison term and ban on holding office, with one loyalist warning of possible "civil war" unless punishment for his tax-fraud conviction is lifted.

Renato Brunetta, a leader of Berlusconi's People of Freedom party, said Saturday he and another aide requested a meeting with Italy's president, who can issue pardons. Separately, longtime Berlusconi loyalist Sandro Bondi said Italy risks "civil war" if the 76-year-old media mogul isn't spared punishment.

A law to reduce prison overcrowding slashes Berlusconi's four-year sentence to one year. Since he is over 70, he can choose house confinement or perform social services in lieu of prison.

Premier Enrico Letta's fragile coalition risks collapse if Berlusconi's party withdraws support.
