Andrew Sullivan: Romney 'Like an Alien That Ripped Off His Mask' at Debates

The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan blasted Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney as a "brand new candidate" following this month's presidential debates, saying on the "This Week" roundtable that Romney "was like an alien that ripped off his mask" at the first debate.

"The big elephant in the room is that the Mitt Romney that showed up on October 3rd was like an alien that ripped off his mask and said, 'I'm brand new now,'" said Sullivan, editor of "The Dish" at The Daily Beast. "He has evolutionary ideology, like he still has evolving doctrines."

Sullivan, a self-identified conservative who supports President Obama and has criticized Romney regularly, called Romney a candidate who "has no core at all and has changed it a dozen times to appeal to whatever market share he's appealing to."

"I'm sorry, but Romney was a severe conservative from January to October, and now he's a new candidate," Sullivan said. "What I'm amazed at is why Republicans aren't scared about what he'll be in January or July."

Republican strategist and ABC News political analyst Nicolle Wallace rebutted that "whatever it is, is better than Obama," prompting Sullivan to question Romney's budget plans as "a massive increase in debt."

Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of PBS' "Washington Week" said that Romney's debate performances helped him close the enthusiasm gap that has long plagued him among Republicans.

"At this point in the campaign, all that matters is who's got the last-minute enthusiasm," Ifill said. "You cannot argue that the Republicans, who had gotten a little depressed, were enthused after what they saw in that debate? Ask people who won all three of those debates, they said that the president won the last two, Romney won the first one, but Romney won all three. That's how important that first one [was]."

Nexus 10 vs. iPad 4 - spec shoot-out

Android Central

So, now that the Samsung Nexus 10 has been announced, how does it stack up against the competition? The big tablet to beat right now is the 4th-generation iPad, and as you can tell by the tale of the tape, it's a close race. We also line up the Nexus 10 against the new Microsoft Surface, the BlackBerry PlayBook, and the lower-end Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for good measure.

iOS 6 versus Android 4.2 is a hard comparison to make just yet, but there are a lot of cool new features coming in the latest version of Jelly Bean that stand a good chance of blowing iOS 6 out of the water. Apple's latest mobile operating system only just added panorama photography, while Google's Sphere Photos add a whole new dimension to the idea. The QR code-dependent Passbook might be a bit more widely-accepted than NFC-based Android equivalents, but at least Android still has rock-solid Google Maps and built-in YouTube support. We'll have more on Android 4.2 once we get our hands on it.

The 10-inch 2560 x 1600 display on the N10 soundly beats out the 2048 x 1536 display on the new iPad. There's no cellular version of the Nexus 10 just yet, so the iPad gets a bit of an edge in that department. I'd say The Nexus 10 makes up for it with the inclusion of NFC, though. Video-out options are nice and open standards like DLNA and HDMI, unlike the iPad 4's proprietary AirPlay and wire adapters. Weight and dimensions are nearly the same, though the Nexus 10 is marginally slimmer and lighter. It looks like the iPad 4 has a slightly larger battery (11,666 mAh according to reports last year), though we'll have to wait and see how that trannslates to real-world usage.

Of course, there's also the difference in price; the Nexus 10 is starting at $100 less than the iPad 4, which may be a decider for many shoppers. In any case, that's just a bird's eye view of how the Nexus 10 stacks up on paper. Which spec difference are most striking to you? (Oh, also, don't be shy about letting us know if any of these specs are off.)

Android 4.2's Photo Sphere camera takes on iPhone's panorama mode

Android 42's Photo Sphere camera takes on iPhone's panorama mode

Android 4.2 is teeming with new features and system improvements, but you can bet that Photo Sphere will be the one that's talked about most amongst consumers. While Android phones on the whole have had panoramic modes for years, Apple's iOS 6 update added even more fuel to that fire. Now, Google's taking things to an entirely new level. With Android 4.2, users can snap pictures in every direction, and the system does the stitching. What you're left with are photos that can be navigated, taking viewers "inside of the scene." Photo Spheres are stored as JPEG files, and all of the information required to view them is embedded as open XML metadata in the image itself. You'll be able to peek 'em on your phone or share them easily through Google+, and perhaps best of all, publish them to Google Maps for the world to see. Head on past the break to see what you've got to look forward to.

BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE | Comic Book and Movie Reviews

Can any good come out of a lie? Not a malicious lie mind you. Oh no. Nothing like that. But rather a lie in which 'Person A' tries to protect 'Person B' because they care for them so much. You know, just like something depicted in this film Directed by Raja Gosnell; and Starring: Martin Lawrence, Paul Giamatti, Nia Long, Anthony Anderson, and Terrence Howard. It was made in 2000, and lasts for 98 minutes.

Big Momma's House

THE STORY:

FBI agent, Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence), has a very unusual problem on his hands. No. Don't worry. He knows that his partner, John Maxwell (Paul Giamatti), is loosing his hair. Instead, Malcolm's dilemma is because he has been instructed to survey the house belonging to and old fat black woman called 'Big Momma' (Ella Mitchell), only to end up turning into her and then falling in love with her long lost niece, Sherry Pierce (Nia Long).

Alright, I know that does sound very-very strange. However, the thing is, Sherry's ex-partner, Lester Vescro (Terrence Howard), recently broke out of prison and is looking for Sherry, because she has some stolen money belonging to him, that he does not know she has in her possession. Moreover, when 'Big Momma' is called away on matters of the heart,?out of the blue,?Sherry suddenly turns up, prompting Malcolm to quickly take Momma's place with some additional cosmetic dabbling.

OK, so do you get the bigger picture now, dear reader? Yes! Thank God. Just like Sherry and her son, Trent (Jascha Washington), when they go to church with Momma / Malcolm, and carry on a 'normal family'.

You know the type of thing I'm sure. They go shopping together. They deliver babies together. They play basketball together. They go to judo together. And they get ogled by Momma's boyfriend together too.

Though, some of the things they don't do together, is when Malcolm checks in with John from time to time, and hears the news that Lester and Momma are on their way home.

Ouch! That's most probably why what next transpires kick's off when the security guard called Terry (Anthony Anderson) grabs some nuts. As paths collide - beware of the bride - lies are shied - and a priests can not help but turn the tied.

Amen.

THE REVIEW:
It is a little known fact that the screenwriter of 'Big Momma's House', Darryl Quarles, first came up with the idea behind this flick, because this was the name that the neighborhood kids gave his own very mother. However, a small part of me does wonder what would have happened if they called his Mum something like 'Batman verses Mary Poppins' (click here?for review)? Or what about 'A platform to showcase the cartoon-like talents of Martin Laurence'?

Well? Could it work I suppose. And it did -- in part. But before I give you my 411 on this crime comedy caper, please check out these filmic facts first. (1) In 1999 Martin Lawrence slipped into a coma after collapsing from heat exhaustion while jogging. (2) Ella Mitchell was an un-credited singer in the film 'Lord Shango'. (3) Terrence Howard saw his father stab a man in self-defense when he was three years old. He served eleven months for manslaughter. (4) Paul Giamatti's father was once the president of Yale University. (5) Nia Long is a fully registered Girl Scout. (6) Jascha Washington's first role was in the television series 'Brooklyn South'. (7) Martin was arrested at Burbank Airport in 1996 for carrying a loaded gun in his suitcase. (8) In 2000 Nia was voted one of the 50 most beautiful people in the World by 'People Magazine'. (9) Paul has both Italian and Irish blood running through his veins. (10) Terrance has a degree in Chemical Engineering. And (11) Ella was interviewed by David Frost in the seventies.

OK, so now I have all of that out of my system, let me just say 'Big Momma's House' is a movie which in some way is exactly like the pretext it's trying to convey -- it has too much padding on. You see, what I mean by this, is just like the prosthetic Martin Lawrence's character wears in this film, this film itself is cosmetic in substance and bulky in tone.

Conceptually speaking of course -- plot wise -- most of this movie is basically ?filler? so Martin can clown around and play ?Big Momma? whenever he can. And although I do enjoy watching him performing all of his shtick here and there, within the context of this particular crime caper, it does seem overtly contrived and forced into the proceedings.

Please note, I don?t want to sound like 'Mister Pompous Prick' were Martin?s performance is concerned. Oh no. Because he is just superb in that ?Eddie Murphy? type way of his. All I am trying to say is that within the confines of this story, his cartoonish antics is too?extravagant?and blatant. Also, his performance does take away from some of the supporting players by default-- as Paul, Nia, and Terrance?s roles do feel somewhat overpowered by Martins central figure.

However, in the same breath, individually these three 'supporting cast members' do manage to stake their claim in a number of different ways. Paul uses his nervous demeanor. Nia uses her good looks. And Terrance is just one frightening b*stard. Heck, the only other actors who manage to match Martin with his OTT antics, are the other OTT characters! Such as ?Momma's boyfriend? and Anthony for example.

Overall, ?Big Momma?s House? is a so-so film to watch. It's funny in places. The story is simple to follow. And in someway it is a mixture of 'Ms Doubtfire', 'The Nutty Professor', and 'Stake Out 2'. Plus in addition to this, it is a film that will take your mind away to cartoon-land for 90-minutes or so, allowing you to sit back, relax, and think about what I have just said, and then say to yourself ?Well Lord have mercy, dat dam fool is right!?.

Best Laid Plans: Life Vs Home Improvement - Blogs | Babble

Life Vs Home Improvement Best Laid Plans: Life Vs Home ImprovementWe have been planning for over a month now to redo the stairs. I?ve searched for ideas, bought the supplies, and scheduled no less than 3 work days. It seemed like a fairly simple process ? pull up the carpet, paint the stairs, choose a decorating scheme.

Then, life happened.

At first, we had trouble finding a free weekend. There was volleyball, soccer, Girl Scouts, and school activities. Once we made it through the sports? seasons, we had a little more time on our hands. I thought for sure we?d be able to tackle the project in just a few hours. Yeah, I?m hilarious.

On our first planned work weekend, the tween was diagnosed with scarlet fever (no, seriously) so the weekend was spent hauling her to the doctor, then the urgent care center, and then to the pharmacy. We spent the rest of the weekend nursing her back to health and keeping the children separated.

I can?t even remember what happened the next weekend, but I know the work day disappeared before I even knew it. Finally, I just started ripping out the carpet. I thought I could at least see what it would take to make it happen. The next thing I knew, I had ripped all the carpet out and was pretty much locked into the project.

The Unfinished Stairs 224x300 Best Laid Plans: Life Vs Home ImprovementI removed nails, pulled up carpet tack, and scraped old drywall mud. When the hubby arrived home and saw what I was doing, he didn?t even roll his eyes before pitching in and finishing the job. The stairs are clear ? and I already love it so much more than the old, ratty carpet.

That was when I realized the stairs needed a little trim work before they could be finished. There were a few gaps here and there, due to the builders not taking the time to finish them properly. After all, they probably never imagined an insane woman ripping out the carpet one random Saturday night.

By that point, Home Depot was closed so our project was on hold. And Sunday was already booked. The rest of the week was fall break, with family fun activities and kids underfoot all day. Today was supposed to be another work day, but I hadn?t considered the evening?s plans with this idea. The girls are having friends spend the night, which makes dealing with wet paint a little difficult.

Okay, so tomorrow, right? Except by the time all our visitors are home, we still have the problem of finishing the job and getting the paint dried before the girls need to go up stairs for bed. And, this is a problem every weekend ? the girls are around, the pets are in the way. How do we paint stairs in a busy house?

I think we?ll have to get started early one morning, right after the girls are at school. Even if the stairs are not dried before they get home, at least we?ll have a few more hours to bedtime. Now, who wants to keep 2 cats and a dog while we paint?

A big thanks to The Home Depot for sponsoring this campaign. Click here to see more of the discussion.

(AP) ? The 12-year-old daughter of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was in fair condition Saturday evening at Miami Children's Hospital after she was airlifted there following a golf-cart accident in a gated community, the senator's office said.

The Republican senator was notified of the accident while coming off stage after a rally with GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney Saturday afternoon.

The senator campaigned with Romney at two Florida rallies on Saturday and was scheduled to attend a third before being picked up by a state police cruiser along Romney's motorcade route.

Rubio spokesman Alex Conant wrote in an email late Saturday that Amanda, who is the senator's oldest daughter, was in "fair condition" after the afternoon accident.

"While visiting with classmates, she was a passenger on a golf cart involved in a collision in a private gated community," Conant wrote. "She was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital with a head injury. She has been admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit."

"Senator and Mrs. Rubio are grateful for all the outpouring of support and prayers," he added, including calls from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden and a personal message from Romney.

According to The Miami Herald, a Romney spokeswoman said, "Governor Romney spoke with Senator Rubio and expressed his concern and hope for Amanda Rubio's quick recovery."

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, a family friend, said outside the hospital that Amanda "had a concussion" but was doing better, according to a video posted on The Herald's website.

"He is with her," Sosa said. "The family's next to her and he's already in the hospital.

According to the newspaper, Rubio has four children. He kept his family in his hometown after being elected to the U.S. Senate, preferring to commute to Washington from his West Miami home.

Haida Gwaii iron dumping hot topic as nations negotiate ...

VANCOUVER -- Canada may be called onto the carpet this week as nations gather in the United Kingdom to negotiate the terms of an international treaty to regulate the controversial practice of geoengineering.

A First Nations salmon restoration group in Haida Gwaii has attracted worldwide attention after dumping more than 100 metric tonnes of iron into the Pacific Ocean in a process known as ocean fertilization.

Many scientists from around the world have condemned the unsanctioned experiment, and the federal government says it is investigating.

But Canada is a hotbed of geoengineering, says a watchdog group, and has been involved in similar experiments in the past.

Geoengineering is the deliberate modification of the environment as a means of combating climate change.

"Some countries would like to see geoengineering more acceptable than it has been, and Canada's in that bunch of countries," said Jim Thomas, spokesman for Montreal-based ETC Group, which opposes the practice.

Canada has pulled out of the Kyoto Protocol, which committed the country to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and geoengineering is "potentially very attractive," Thomas said.

"You do have governments, and some large industries and some of the think tanks they sponsor who would prefer to see us go down the route of geoengineering. That if geoengineering could be touted as a cheap and quick and easy fix, that means we don't have to do all the heavy lifting of reducing emissions and changing our economy, then they would prefer that."

Canada funded and participated in two ocean fertilization experiments in 1999 and 2002 prior to signing onto a voluntary UN moratorium.

In July 2002, Fisheries Department scientists participated in a small-scale ocean project 1,500 kilometres off the coast of British Columbia called Subarctic Ecosystem Response to Iron Enrichment Study.

The iron causes a phytoplankton bloom, a natural sponge for carbon from the atmosphere. As organism feed off the plankton and die, sinking to the bottom of the ocean, the carbon is trapped down there. Previous, smaller-scale tests show the effect was short-term.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada's current research, though, is limited to computer simulations, spokesman Frank Stanek said in an email response to questions.

"Since that time, the department has not been involved in the deployment of iron solution into the ocean," Stanek wrote.

ETC Group, which works on issues of how new technologies can impact the world's poor and vulnerable, lists eleven projects that have taken place or are in the works, including a hail suppression project in Alberta that continues today.

Funded by a consortium of insurance firms, the project seeds clouds over the Prairie province with silver iodide, to shrink ice stones.

Such geoengineering projects are controversial, but on the rise in the face of climate change.

In the incident off Haida Gwaii, the Haida Salmon Restoration Corp. of the village of Old Massett dumped iron into the ocean in late July. The effort was two-fold: to create a phytoplankton bloom that would one, spur salmon returns, and two, capture carbon for profit.

The iron causes a phytoplankton bloom, a natural sponge for carbon from the atmosphere. As organism feed off the plankton and die, sinking to the bottom of the ocean, the carbon is trapped down there. Previous, smaller-scale tests show the effect was short-term.

The negative reaction in the scientific world was swift.

There are several voluntary and mandatory international moratoria on ocean dumping and specifically on iron fertilization, and Environment Canada is investigating the experiment.

A regulatory regime to address exactly the kind of incident that took place off Haida Gwaii is up for negotiation at the meeting next week in London for the London Convention and Protocol, which bans dumping toxins at sea.

Adam Sweet, a spokesman for the Environment Department, said Canadian officials will be in London for the meeting on the London Convention from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2, and "in addition to the regular business at these meetings... parties will be discussing the issue of ocean fertilization."

The delegates will stress that no permission was granted for the experiment, and ocean fertilization is not allowed except for accredited scientific research.

"Minister Kent will direct his officials to inform conference delegates that over the past six years, Canada has strengthened its enforcement regime, and that Canada will use the full extent of our enforcement abilities to ensure that those who violate Canadian environmental law are caught, and charged," Sweet wrote.

The Old Massett experiment will be a hot topic, said Wendy Watson-Wright, assistant director general and executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

"It has concerns for Canada, concerns for the U.S., concerns for anybody on the Pacific but also, I think, for anybody on an ocean because it is one ocean," Watson-Wright said in an interview from Ottawa.

The experiment, which has been condemned by several Haida leaders, was much larger than any previous experiment, she pointed out.

"There are just so many questions that we see this as a very dangerous precedent."

Now the important thing is to monitor the fallout, she said.

"But monitoring of what and where? That's what needs to be decided and it does require the international scientific community to be inputting into those decisions."

Satellite images suggest airstrike on Sudan site

CAIRO (AP) ? Satellite images of the aftermath of an explosion at a Sudanese weapons factory this past week suggest the site was hit in an airstrike, a U.S. monitoring group said Saturday.

The Sudanese government has accused Israel of bombing its Yarmouk military complex in Khartoum, killing two people and leaving the factory in ruins.

The images released by the Satellite Sentinel Project to The Associated Press on Saturday showed six 52-foot (16-meter) wide craters near the epicenter of Wednesday's explosion at the compound.

Military experts consulted by the project found the craters to be "consistent with large impact craters created by air-delivered munitions, Satellite Sentinel Project spokesman Jonathan Hutson told the AP.

The target may have been around 40 shipping containers seen at the site in earlier images. The group said the craters center on the area where the containers had been stacked. It did not comment on the allegations of Israeli involvement or who might be behind the strikes.

Jonah Leff, who monitors Sudan for the Geneva-based Small Arms Survey and was not connected to the project, reviewed the images on Saturday and agreed with the group's assessment.

Israeli officials have neither confirmed nor denied striking the site. Instead, they accused Sudan of playing a role in an Iranian-backed network of arms shipments to Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel believes Sudan is a key transit point in the circuitous route that weapons take to the Islamic militant groups in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

Sudan was a major hub for al-Qaida militants and remains a transit for weapon smugglers and African migrant traffickers. Israeli officials believe arms that originate in the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas go through Sudan before crossing Egypt's lawless Sinai desert and into Gaza through underground tunnels.

The Satellite Sentinel Project is a partnership between the Enough Project, a Washington-based anti-genocide advocacy group and DigitalGlobe, which operates three commercial satellites and provides geospatial analysis. The project was founded last year with support from actor George Clooney, and in the past has used satellite images to monitor the destruction of villages by Sudanese troops in the country's multiple war zones.

Opened in 1996, Yarmouk is one of two known state-owned weapons manufacturing plants in the Sudanese capital. Sudan prided itself in having a way to produce its own ammunition and weapons despite United Nations and U.S. sanctions.

The satellite images indicate that the Yarmouk facility includes an oil storage facility, a military depot and an ammunition plant.

The monitoring group said the images indicate that the blast "destroyed two buildings and heavily damaged at least 21 others," adding that there was no indication of fire damage at the fuel depot inside the military complex.

The group said it could not be certain the containers, seen in images taken Oct. 12, were still there when explosion took place. But the effects of the blast suggested a "highly volatile cargo" was at the epicenter of the explosion.

"If the explosions resulted from a rocket or missile attack against material stored in the shipping containers, then it was an effective surgical strike that totally destroyed any container" that was at the location, the project said.

Yarmouk is located in a densely populated residential area of the city approximately 11 kilometers (seven miles) southwest of the Khartoum International Airport.

Wednesday's explosion sent exploding ammunition flying into homes in the neighborhood adjacent to the factory, causing panic among residents. Sudanese officials said some people suffered from smoke inhalation.

A man who lives near the factory said that from inside their house, he and his brother heard a load roar of what they believed was a plane just before the boom of the explosion sounded from the factory.

In the aftermath of Wednesday's explosion, Sudanese officials said the government has the right to respond to what the information minister said was a "flagrant attack" by Israel on Sudan's sovereignty and right to strengthen its military capabilities.

In a Friday speech marking Eid al Adha, Islam's biggest holiday, Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir called Israel "short-sighted," according to comments published by the Egyptian state-owned paper Al Ahram. The president likened the incident to the 1998 bombing by American cruise missiles of a Khartoum pharmaceutical factory suspected of links to al-Qaida.

Some Israeli commentators suggested that if Israel did indeed carry out an airstrike causing Wednesday's blast, it might have been a trial run of sorts for an operation in Iran. Both countries are roughly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away from Israel, and an air operation would require careful planning and in-flight refueling.

9 Clever Uses for Dried Beans | Care2 Healthy Living

You may have passed dried beans in the bulk section at the store, or pre-bagged and ready for sale with other dry goods, without a thought, but they actually have a lot of uses, and not just edible ones. They come in a range of shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors, which makes them ideally suited to a range of craft and cooking projects, as well as some surprising and creative repurposings.

The first and most obvious use of dried beans is the intended one: as a culinary ingredient. Dried beans are very inexpensive and they can be a great way to save money on groceries. They?re less costly than canned beans and come without additives, allowing you to control how they?re processed. Beans also provide a great source of protein, as well as numerous nutrients. The specific nutritional information can depend on the bean, but they tend to be high in useful vitamins.

You can store dried beans in a cool dry place until you?re ready to use them. Plan on soaking them for at least six hours before cooking, and make sure to drain the soaking water and rinse them well when you?re ready to start cooking. Soaking helps the beans cook more quickly and it can also reduce the flatulence beans are infamous for provoking. You can use beans in chili, soup, and a variety of other recipes as directed. Try preparing a big batch and freezing them so you?ll have cooked beans ready for use when you need them.

Dried beans can also be ground into bean flour. This gluten-free flour can be used as a thickener in numerous recipes and as part of gluten-free flour blends for baking. If you don?t have a flour mill at home, food processors often come with attachments you can use to make flours, or you may be able to find a local health foods store that grinds grains into flours for its customers. If it?s critical that your flour be gluten-free, make sure to check with the staff at the store to confirm that their flour mill is reserved for gluten-free grains.

You can also use them as pie weights; no need to buy fancy ones from the gourmet kitchen gadget store. Pour some dried beans into the bottom of a pie crust to hold it down during prebaking, and remove them when you?re ready to add the filling.

The Big D Gets a Big Park ? Next American City

Dallas | 10/26/2012 3:52pm |
Patrick McDonnell | Next American City

Klyde Warren Park, under construction over the Woodall Rodgers Freeway.

This weekend Dallas will see a big shift in its urban landscape, to come in the form of a park over a highway.

Klyde Warren Park, a 5.2-acre deck park spanning the Woodall Rodgers Freeway, opens up to the public this Saturday. It will connect the Arts District Downtown to Uptown businesses and residences and provide a new green space for public engagement and interaction.

Taking 10 years to plan and $110 million to build, Klyde Warren park is most recent ?bridge? to come online in the last seven months, succeeding the newly christened, Santiago Calatrava- designed Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, which opened in March to the tune of $182 million.

The park offers just about every amenity thinkable: A botanical garden with native plants, a children?s park, an interactive fountain, the Dallas Morning News reading and games room, a great lawn, performing arts pavilion, restaurant/food kiosk, a grand plaza with more fountains, several promenades, the east lawn, a commons with permanently installed games, and a dog park. The McKinney Avenue Trolley will also make frequent stops at the park coming from Uptown. Additionally, the park will be Wi-Fi enabled, have security lighting installed throughout the property, and will be monitored by full-time security officers.

Working with the Social Fabric

Much like the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, Klyde Warren Park faces apprehension and anticipation about how another large-scale capital improvement project will affect the social fabric of the city. It is named after 10-year old Klyde Warren, son of billionaire Kelcy Warren, who donated $10 million in his son?s honor. There is no doubt that Dallas? philanthropic roots continue to shape the urban context, but regardless of its world-class status the park will have to address the wants and the needs at the local level, and convince people that it is a solution for social connectivity.

In March, the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation hired a new president, Mark Banta, to take the reigns of the project, Banta, who served as general manager for the 21-acre Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta since 1996 and led the effort to restore Bryant Park in New York, and has plenty of experience. He brings the Bryant Park model, which offers up regular programming and promises a ?safe, clean, and active? environment that sends a powerful message that public spaces are under control.

Klyde Warren Park folks aren?t speculating about programming. The park team is aware of the challenges of being in the spotlight and the expectation of success that comes along with an $8 million dollar annual budget.

?Finding corporate partners that want to be associated with our brand and with our programming, but without making it feel too commercial, is the balancing act,? Banta said.
??????
?For now, it seems, the scheduled programming is meant to entice patronage and builds off the wisdom of sociologist William ?Holly? Whyte, who observed that ?What attracts people most, in sum, is other people.?

Successful Placemaking and the Learning Curve

Downtown?s two most recent parks, the 1.75-acre Main Street Garden and 1.5-acre Belo Garden, provide some insight into how parks function in Dallas. Main Street Garden has become a popular spot for dog owners, provides a contained dining area, and serves as setting for big seasonal events (more recently it has become a regular launching pad for Critical Mass bike rides). Belo Garden, at the other end of Main Street, is defined mostly by its interactive water park feature and also serves as a haven for dog owners. Activity is very contained.

Both parks operate under the auspice of good design as a driver of success. Additionally, they are also regularly patrolled by a private security force and are maintained by private cleaning crews in order to perpetuate the goodness of the design. Though the parks are nice, there is something quaint about them ? the prospect of stumbling onto something unexpected is not expected, and raises the question of how to allow an organic ?place,? which ultimately defines good public spaces, to evolve.

Dallas has a multitude of highly designed park spaces, from Philip Johnson?s Thanks-Giving Square, to I.M. Pei?s City Hall Plaza, to the AT&T Performing Arts Center, a $354 million multi-venue center that opened in 2009 and is catty-corner to the Klyde Warren Park. While City Hall Plaza continues to mostly sit as a dead space, Thanksgiving Square and AT&T Performing Arts Center have experienced resurgences in activity thanks to food trucks. Holly Whyte?s wisdom strikes again: ?If you want to seed a place with activity, put out food. Food attracts people who attract more people.? Additionally, the Performing Arts Center is becoming a destination for outdoor music events, shows and movies, and is attracting people because of the promise of culture. People have gotten used to the idea of being there every day.

The success of Klyde Warren will not only reflect in how the area develops around it, but in its own ability as a placemaker. Gil Penalosa, executive director of Toronto-based non-profit 8-80 Cities, gave a presentation to Dallas City Hall in April about the importance of a network of green spaces, long linear parks and accessibility for people ages 8 to 80. In May, New York City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden, a student of Holly Whyte and shepherd of the High Line, spoke at the Nasher Sculpture Center about the importance of organic growth through simple placemaking elements, such as moveable tables and chairs, food options and entertainment.

Dallas continues to see a shift in placemaking at the local level as well, especially with the success of Team Better Block to transform a neighborhood block for a weekend as a pedestrian-friendly destination, the emergence of outdoor markets and trend toward community- led placemaking projects.
???????????
?This weekend?s celebration will mark another triumph in Dallas?s history for re-thinking the urban landscape, though the promise of connectivity will remain a question long after the opening. Learning from the success of recent public spaces around the city, the focus will have to shift from events to the everyday ? from programmed fun to un-programmed spontaneity, which allows the community to shape its environment and take ownership of the space. It will also have to create a familiarity and the expectation of culture. It will have to become a ?place? for connectivity.

Absentee ballots may have been destroyed in crash

(AP) ? Federal officials say that absentee ballots being sent to U.S. military serving in Afghanistan may have been burned in a plane crash.

A top official in the Federal Voting Assistance Program this week notified election officials across the nation that a transport plane crashed at Shindad Air Base on Oct. 19.

The crash resulted in the destruction of 4,700 pounds of mail inbound to troops serving in the area.

Federal officials in their email to state election offices said they did not know if any ballots were destroyed. They also said the lost mail was limited to one zip code.

But they recommended that election officials resend a new ballot to anyone who requested one since the first ballot may have been destroyed in the crash and fire.

Catholic Church bid to strip Savile's papal honor

FILE - This is a March 25, 2008 file photo of Sir Jimmy Savile, who for decades was a fixture on British television. A year after he died, aged 84 and honored as Sir Jimmy, several women have come forward to claim he was also a sexual predator and serial abuser of underage girls. The child abuse scandal that has enveloped the BBC, one of Britain's most respected news organizations, is now hitting one of America's, as the incoming president of The New York Times is on the defensive about his final days as head of the BBC. LONDON (AP) ? The Catholic Church of England says it has contacted the Holy See to ask if the papal knighthood awarded to late television star Jimmy Savile could be removed following sexual abuse allegations.

Police say some 300 potential victims have come forward with abuse allegations against Savile, a well-known BBC children's television host who died last year. Most of them say they were abused by Savile, but some say they were abused by other people, police said Friday.

The church said Saturday that Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichol wrote to Vatican officials last week, asking the Holy See to investigate the possibility of posthumously removing Savile's honor in recognition of the "deep distress" of the alleged victims.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and the Vatican for his charitable work.

Real Estate Expert Jennifer Myers Helps Realtors Sell Homes More ...

Jennifer Myers, Broker and Owner of Dwell Residential Brokerage, DC?s most unique real estate brokerage, recently appeared on the ?Money For Lunch? radio show to explain how real estate agents can get their listings sold quickly during the holiday season.

Washington, D.C. ? October 26, 2012 ? Jennifer Myers, owner of Dwell Residential Brokerage, is an award-winning agent with more than 10 years of real estate experience in the Washington metro area.? Jennifer Myers recently joined Bert Martinez, Host of the ?Money For Lunch? radio show. Jennifer and Bert discussed why the holiday season is a great time for real estate agents to reach out to their clients.

Jennifer said that agents should urge their home sellers to list their properties during the holidays instead of the conventional wisdom of taking homes off the market during these times. ?This is a great opportunity to get in touch with your seller clients and let them know that now is a good time to be selling.? There are buyers out there!? remarked Myers. ?This is a great way for them to get their homes sold before the end of the year, have a tax benefit for the current year and avoid all of the Spring listing competition.?

Bert and Jennifer also spoke about Jennifer?s innovative philosophy about selling real estate. Jennifer places strong emphasis on selling a home?s ?story? and the lifestyle that accompanies a particular home, rather than just the typical real estate selling points such as features within the home.

?We ask our seller clients to tell the story of their house themselves ? why they picked it, what their life has been like, and why they are moving,? said Jennifer.

One of the ways the Dwell does this is by having the sellers create a video, giving potential buyers a personal tour of their home and neighborhood. ?At the end of the day, people buy a house because they believe there will be a certain life change when they live in that house. Who better to explain that than the person who has been living there??

The entire interview can be found at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/moneyforlunch/2012/10/22/october-22-2012

Jennifer Myers created Dwell Residential Brokerage to be a completely different type of brokerage that not only caters to clients? needs and budgets but also to their hopes and dreams. As cars throughout the automotive spectrum get more efficient, it's an increasing dilemma for buyers looking to improve their gas mileage.

Just what should I buy? One of those fancy hybrids, or a regular, fuel-efficient car?

Different fuel efficient vehicles excel at different types of driving--and as we know, driving styles and conditions have quite an effect on gas mileage.

City driving

Driving in the city presents its own set of unique challenges, and driving conditions also vary from city to city.

Usually though, city driving means a few things: Slow traffic, plenty of time spent at a standstill with your engine wasting fuel, lots of punishment on your brakes, and plenty of stress.

Regular gasoline and diesel engines aren't perfect in city driving. Few feature stop-start systems to save fuel when caught in traffic, and every time you stop you're wasting energy--few regular cars have regenerative braking.

Hybrids are much more suited to this environment, though. Not only will all hybrids kill the engine when standing still, but full hybrids--like all Toyota and Ford hybrids, as well as some others--will allow you to travel on electricity alone at low speeds, while the battery lasts.

And the battery should last a decent distance in stop-start traffic, as each time you slow down, energy is put back into the pack.

Above all, driving a hybrid is relaxing in traffic--not just because virtually all hybrids are automatic, but because you'll be saving on gas bills--hybrids typically do their most economical work in city driving.

Highway driving

While some hybrids are known for their aerodynamic bodies, helping them achieve good gas mileage at constant higher speeds, highways have recently become the domain of another gas-sipping category--diesels.

Punchy, low-revving and efficient engines in modern diesels do their best work for long periods at constant throttle loads.

A long journey also helps a diesel engine get to its most efficient operating temperature, which takes a little longer than it does on gasoline vehicles.

Once you're sitting on the freeway, a modern diesel--from Volkswagen or BMW, for example--will happily chug away at low engine speeds, sipping gas but offering enough torque in reserve should you need an extra burst of speed. Not only that, but low revs also means low noise--you're much more likely to hear wind and tire roar than you are any sounds from the engine. It's not a bad way to travel, and you'll be using very little fuel too.
