OH THE HORROR! The 6th annual Berkeley Horror Film Festival is set for Saturday, with local filmmakers showing their pre-Halloween shorts in a fundraiser for Berkeley Community Media, the city-sponsored cable access channel and website.??We?ve seen clowns and witches running in the streets of Oakland and San Francisco and a lot of blood and guts,? said festival creator Jeff Lunzaga. ?This year a lot of people are going on the whole zombie and monster thing. We actually have a western this year. We try to be ambitious.??Berkeley?s Horror Film festival starts at 7 p.m. at 2239 Martin Luther King Jr. Way at the Berkeley Community Media studios inside Berkeley High School. It includes a costume contest and a haunted house. Admission is $10 per person, but those who dress up pay just $5.
TEEN COUNSELING ?Berkeley psychotherapist and?author Jan Sells will be giving a talk at the Hillside Club on Friday titled ?What?s bothering teens today??. It?s founded on her new book Lost and Found, Healing Troubled Teens in Troubled Times, which she wrote based on her experience ?developing a unique counseling program at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School over a period of two decades.?Sells continues to supervise interns who work with students at King where the program she created is still going strong. Sells can be heard on KPFA on Sunday evening, and is holding her book launch party on?Sunday Nov. 3 at King Middle School.?Visit her website for more details.
BRAZILIAN HALLOWEEN ?Brasarte holds its annual Family Halloween Ball on Saturday. Described as ?a fun, friendly and gently frightening evening suitable for all ages? the event includes music, dancing, costume contests, costume parade, games and more. Adults, teens and children are invited to attend in costume!?Brazilian appetizers and drinks will be for sale. DARK SIDE OF PLANTS ?On the eve of Halloween, families can discover some of the strange plants that lurk in Berkeley?s own botanical garden ? and even take one home. The UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley is hosting an ?Extreme Plants? family workshop which will explore the curious plants with a dark side that live in the garden?s collections.?Saturday Oct. 27, 1 p.m.- 2.30 p.m.,?UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley, 200 Centennial Drive.?Advance registration required: $12 per person, $10 members.
KIDS? SHOWTIME ?Sunday is the last chance to catch?Bay Area Children?s Theatre?s?production of?Lyle The Crocodile?at the Freight & Salvage.?A fun-filled, action-packed stage version of the popular children?s stories by Bernard Waber, the show is recommended for age 4 and up.
