Thanks to NASA's Cassini spacecraft which has been orbiting Saturn since 2004, scientists have been able to observe for the first time ever the seasonal atmospheric circulation direction change on Titan ? an event which only happens once every 15 years and is never observable from Earth. Their findings are published today in Nature.
Titan, while technically only a moon, is bigger than the planet Mercury, and is often considered a planet in its own right. It is the only known moon to have a significant atmosphere and is one of only four terrestrial atmospheres in our Solar System (the other three being Earth, Venus, and Mars). As Titan's rotation axis is tilted by a similar amount to that of the Earth, it experiences seasons in a similar way, but at a much more relaxed pace as Saturn takes 29.5 Earth years to orbit the Sun.
Dr Nick Teanby of the University of Bristol and colleagues used infrared spectra measured by Cassini's Composite InfraRed Spectrometer (CIRS) instrument to determine atmospheric temperature and global distributions of chemical tracers. This allowed them to map out the seasonal changes in great detail.
The team observed an enormous increase in Titan's exotic trace gases over the south pole within a relatively short time. These trace gases are produced high in Titan's atmosphere, where sunlight and highly energetic particles break down nitrogen and methane and recombine to form a vast array of more complex molecules like benzene and hydrogen cyanide.
Co-author, Dr Remco de Kok of SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research said: "We were waiting for signs that the trace gas abundances would change together with the new season, but we did not expect such a large and rapid change: some gas concentrations increased more than a thousand times within only a few months. Also surprising was that this was happening at altitudes above 450 km, much higher than initially anticipated."
At these high altitudes the atmosphere goes around the planet much faster than the rotation of Titan's solid surface and can have horizontal wind speeds around the planet of up to 200m/s (450mph). Vertical winds caused by the seasonally varying hemisphere to hemisphere atmospheric circulation are much slower at a rather sluggish few millimetres per second and are hard to measure using conventional means.
Lead author, Dr Nick Teanby of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences said: "Using measurements of temperature and chemical tracers by Cassini, we were able to observe changes in the subtle vertical winds and reveal the pole-to-pole circulation cell. For the first time ever, we observed the circulation cell direction reverse over the south pole around the time of the 2009 southern autumnal equinox. The resulting distribution of gases shows that the circulation must extend much further than previously thought to 600 km or even higher. This calls into question our current understanding of how Titan's atmosphere works and suggests new avenues to explore."
"Our results provide a powerful new constraint for atmospheric models of Titan. Titan provides a natural laboratory for an Earth-like atmosphere in the cold outer solar system. So, these results could eventually lead to a more complete understanding of atmospheric processes on Earth, other Solar System planets, and the many exoplanetary systems now being discovered."
In the coming years Cassini will continue to observe how the seasons develop. Dr Conor Nixon at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre said: "These results are giving us the first detailed look at changes occurring in Titan's atmosphere around the time of equinox, a season which has not been viewed up close by a spacecraft previously. This shows the really great science that is coming out of the Cassini extended mission phases since 2008, and we look forward to seeing the further changes that will occur over the next five years until the end of mission in 2017."

Spider silk can be scary enough to insects to act as a pest repellant, researchers say.
These findings could lead to a new way to naturally help protect crops, scientists added.
Spiders are among the most common predators on land. Although not all spiders weave webs, they all spin silk that may serve other purposes. For instance, many tiny spiders use silk balloons to travel by air.

Researchers suspected that insects and other regular prey of spiders might associate silk with the risk of getting eaten. As such, they reasoned silk might scare insects off.
The scientists experimented with Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica) and Mexican bean beetles (Epilachna varivestis). These plant-munching pests have spread across eastern North America within the past half-century. [ Ewww! Nature's Biggest Pests ]
The beetles were analyzed near green bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) in both the lab and a tilled field outdoors. The investigators applied two kinds of silk on the plants ? one from silkworms (Bombyx mori) and another from a long-jawed spider (Tetragnatha elongata), a species common in riverbank forests but not in the region the researchers studied.
Both spider and silkworm silk reduced insect plant-chewing significantly. In the lab, both eliminated insect damage entirely, while in the field, spider silk had a greater effect ? plants enclosed with beetles and spider silk experienced about 50 percent less damage than leaves without spider silk, while silkworm silk only led to about a 10 to 20 percent reduction. Experiments with other fibers revealed that only silk had this protective effect.
"This work suggests that silk alone is a signal to potential prey that danger is near," researcher Ann Rypstra, an evolutionary ecologist at Miami University in Ohio, told LiveScience.
Rypstra was most surprised that the effect occurred even though the species involved do not share any evolutionary history together as predator and prey. This suggests "herbivores are using the silk as some sort of general signal that a spider ? any ol' spider ? is around and responding by reducing their activity or leaving the area," she said.
While more work will need to be done before this research might find applied use, the fact that the presence of silk alone reduced damage caused by two economically important pest insects "suggests that there could be applications in agricultural pest management and biological control," Rypstra said.
Rypstra is also interested in the chain reaction of events that silk might trigger in an ecosystem.
"For example, if an herbivore encounters a strand of silk and alters its behavior in a particular manner, does that make it more susceptible to predation by a non-spider?" Rypstra asked. "Do spiders that leave lots of silk behind have a larger impact in the food web, and how does it vary from habitat to habitat? These are just a couple of questions that we might be exploring in the near future."
Rypstra and her colleagues detailed their findings online Wednesday in the journal Biology Letters.

After-school club ? Teacher Stephen Olson loves sharing his passion for board games.
Layton ? Growing up, Stephen Olson loved board games ? all kinds of board games.
He played them with his family and friends. When he went to college at the University of Utah, he started a board game club with fellow students.
Eventually Olson?s friends gave up board games for girlfriends, wives, children and other activities, and the club died out. But Olson?s love for games never diminished.
Fast forward to 2012, and Olson is a math teacher at North Layton Junior High. It?s his first year on the job, and he discovered there is no math club, so he volunteered to supervise one. He then discovers there is no chess club. It?s one of the few board games he doesn?t love, so he asked his administration if he could have a combination chess and board game club.
They consented.
On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, the board game club meets after school from three to five. Olsen is a happy teacher?he gets the chance to play board games and share his knowledge and love of the game with students.
Olsen visited his parents? home and retrieved an assortment of his favorite games from youth including Ingenious, Small World and Tsuro. Other students play trading card games and still others play chess.
"I can?t resist playing games," Olson said. "I play while I?m correcting papers."
The games help students with reassigning skills and logic. Small World teaches them about combination and how things can synergize or work against one another. Olson said the students also have to learn to put on their poker faces when playing.
While the majority of game playing is friendly, tension can break out.

"Small World gets a little heated," Olson said.
Seventh-grader Alex Chipman loves the structure of board games.
"I have Asperger?s so this is one of the few times I can open up and enjoy myself," said Alex, who flits around the room checking out all the games. "I don?t like it when people don?t follow the rules. Here I don?t have to worry about people going against the rules because if they don?t follow them, the game won?t work."
Alex?s father, David Chipman, is a resource teacher at North Layton Junior High. He enjoys having Alex participate in the club. "It keeps him occupied and forces him to interact socially," he said. "I think it gives the kids a way of expressing their own personality without having to be afraid of what anybody else thinks about it because they all have a shared interest in the games. If you are passive or aggressive in your play it?s OK, it?s a game, and no one gets hurt."
Eighth-grader Miriam Wilson has always loved board games, and she has not missed a single day of club. At home she played Monopoly and Sorry. The club has introduced her to new games.
"I like playing with other people," Miriam said. "After I?ve played with them for a while, I know what they are thinking and what their next move is going to be."
At another table sit the trading-card gamers. Two brothers, Braden and Cameron Putnam, are in the club. They enjoy playing games with each other and their brother, but they joined the game club to play against new people.

Lawmakers unveil new round of Iran sanctions
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators pressed ahead Thursday on a new set of tough sanctions against Iran's domestic industries as it seeks to cripple the Islamic republic's economy and thwart its nuclear ambitions.
Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., unveiled a package of penalties that would designate Iran's energy, port, shipping and ship-building sectors as entities of proliferation and sanction transactions with these areas. The legislation also would penalize individuals selling or supplying commodities such as graphite, aluminum and steel to Iran.
The punitive measures build on the sanctions on Tehran's oil industry that the two lawmakers have shepherded through Congress in the past year.
"Yes, our sanctions are having a significant impact, but Iran continues their work to develop nuclear weapons," Menendez said in a statement, adding that with the new penalties, "We will send a message to Iran that they can't just try to wait us out."
Kirk said the measure "will greatly increase the economic pressure on the Iranian regime and send a clear message of support to the Iranian people."
The sanctions are contained in an amendment the two lawmakers hope to add to a far-reaching defense policy bill that the Senate was debating and could wrap up by week's end. Congress has overwhelmingly backed previous efforts by Menendez and Kirk.
The legislation also would designate the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and its president as human rights abusers for broadcasting forced televised confessions and show trials.
The United States and European Union have imposed tough sanctions on Iran that have weakened its economy. But Tehran has found ways to bypass the penalties, such as Turkey's use of gold to pay for Iranian natural gas imports.
The Menendez-Kirk measure would allow the president to impose sanctions in cases of the sale or transfer of precious metals, targeting efforts by Iran to circumvent the penalties.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert and executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said there is strong bipartisan support for intense sanctions, with the goal of pushing the Iranian economy to the brink of economic collapse.
Only then "can the central thesis of the administration's sanctions policy be fairly tested: That crippling economic pressure will break the nuclear will of Iran's supreme leader and his Revolutionary Guards and lead them to meet their obligations under international law," Dubowitz said.
The president has 90 days from the legislation's enactment to act. The bill does include the authority to waive the sanctions based on national security.

The Big East Is a Failed Experiment

In the last few days in conference realignment, Maryland and Rutgers left the ACC and Big East respectively to join the Big Ten; Louisville switched from the Big East to the ACC; Tulane and East Carolina moved from Conference USA to the Big East (the latter in football only); Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee went from the Sun Belt to Conference USA; Denver traded the Western Athletic Conference for the Summit League; and the for-profit Grand Canyon University joined the WAC, becoming the first school of its kind to catch on with a Division 1 conference. The inevitable result of all this horse-trading: In 2022, the Pac-28?s University of Phoenix will play for college football?s national title in University of Phoenix Stadium. (They will lose to Alabama, the champion of the Confederate Football States of America.)
It?s surprising it took a for-profit school this long to get in on the action. For all of these institutions of higher learning, switching from one conference to another is all about profit maximization. This is more a truism than a criticism: Major athletic departments do everything they can to wring every dollar from their football and basketball programs. For the University of Maryland, moving to the Big Ten means an instant bump of $12 million in annual television revenues with the promise of more to come when the conference renegotiates its TV deal in 2017. But if this is a blatant cash grab, then Maryland isn?t grabbing as much as it could. That?s because joining up with the same group of schools for all sports doesn?t make sense.
Even if a school is successful at both football and basketball, fans and big-money donors usually care about one far more than the other. Florida, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio State typically excel at both sports, but they?re really football schools. Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky are basketball schools. (What colleges are equally passionate about both? It?s hard to think of many?BYU, Illinois, and maybe Georgia Tech come to mind.)
Given that reality, college athletics would be more lucrative and?just as important?more stable if football schools and basketball schools stuck together. Imagine a basketball-only conference featuring Maryland, Georgetown, and Syracuse along with the likes of Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Indiana, and Kansas. Likewise, the SEC?s top football powers could enrich themselves still further by dumping Vanderbilt and Kentucky?s gridiron Wildcats in favor of football-only members Texas and Florida State.
This is not a radical idea. For years, Notre Dame has sold its sports a la carte: It?s an independent in football, plays hockey in the CCHA (it will join Hockey East in 2013), fences in the Midwest Fencing Conference, and plays every other sport as part of the Big East. Notre Dame will soon jump from the Big East to the ACC in most sports. It makes sense for the Irish basketball team, which has been good lately, to align itself with powers like North Carolina and Duke. It makes less sense for its lucrative football team to go all-in, which is why the Irish are staying independent and playing five games a season against ACC opponents.

Gildan profit rises on higher printwear sales volume
(Reuters) - Canadian clothing maker Gildan Activewear Inc
Gildan said earnings in the fourth quarter ended September 30 were boosted in part by lower cotton costs and higher sales of printwear, clothing on which other manufacturers print their own designs.
The company said it expected first-quarter earnings of 28 cents to 31 cents per share before special items. That is above the analysts' average estimate of 25 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Gildan, which also manufactures private-label and branded apparel, forecast net sales in excess of $400 million for the current quarter.
The company has been shifting its focus away from private-label goods and is making a "significant investment" in marketing its own brands, which include Gildan and Gold Toe. It also holds the U.S. sock licenses for Under Armour Inc
Gross profit margin rose to 28.5 percent from 20.6 percent a year earlier, helped by the lower cotton costs and higher selling prices for branded goods, offset by lower prices for printwear.
Cotton prices are down 23 percent so far this year on expectations of weak demand amid an uncertain economic outlook.
The company forecast fiscal 2013 earnings of $2.60 to $2.70 per share before special items. Analysts were expecting $2.51.
Gildan said it expected net sales of $2.10 billion for the year, compared with the analysts' estimate of $2.22 billion.
The company increased its quarterly dividend by 20 percent to 9 cents per share.
Net income rose to $89 million, or 73 cents per share, in the fourth quarter, from $48.5 million, or 40 cents per share, a year earlier.
Excluding restructuring costs and other items, earnings were 78 cents per share, while analysts had expected 80 cents.
Net sales rose 17 percent to $561.7 million, just below the consensus estimate of $562.7 million.
Gildan's shares rose 2.9 percent to C$34.04 in early trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Aaron Putnam, a postdoctoral researcher at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, led an expedition to Bhutan to examine links among climate, glaciers and water resources in the Himalaya. This is his final post.
Friday, Nov. 2
A long, tiring drive over a narrow, cliff-bound gravel road took us westward from Sephu back to Thimpu. We dropped Tshewang Rigzin and Pashupati Ssarma at their respective houses, and finally arrived at our hotel where David Putnam and I were met by an enthusiastic and relieved Ed Cook and Paul Krusic. After checking into our room, we compared notes on our respective journeys out of the mountains from Rinchen Zoe.
Ed and Paul said that as they were taking their final steps out of the mountains, they could see the growing storm that would bring blizzard conditions to our high camp at Rinchen Zoe La. Needless to say, they were concerned about our welfare and were doubly relieved to see that we made it from the field site unscathed.
We recounted our saga to Ed and Paul, and they filled us in on theirs. They were able to exit the mountains on schedule for Mike Roberts to catch his flight. The good news was that Ed, Paul, and Karma Tenzin of the Council for Renewable Natural Resources were able to make a reconnaissance collection of samples from the ancient juniper trees growing at the timberline below Tampe La.
These will be among the highest growing trees they have sampled in Bhutan. Ed and Paul were excited about the possibility of reconstructing several centuries of atmospheric temperature from these trees, though they wished that there had been more time to build a larger sample collection. This is clearly a promising avenue for further research.
Soon it was time for dinner, and it turns out that our arrival coincided with the departure of Summer Rupper and her student, Josh Maurer.
They decided to delay their ride to the airport in Paro for one more dinner with the team. Our group met at the local pizza restaurant in Thimpu, whose specialty is the dangerously spicy ?Devil?s Pizza.? Also joining us for dinner was Phuntsho Namgyal, who had been so instrumental in helping to plan the logistics for the excursion.
Even though only weeks had passed since we were last in Thimpu together, and even though many of the team members had first met upon our arrival in Bhutan, it felt like a reunion of old friends. Notably absent were Scott Travis, who was afflicted with altitude sickness and had to turn back early in the trip, and Mike Roberts, who departed Bhutan the previous day.
After dinner, Summer and Josh were escorted to Paro and they departed Bhutan.
The next day, David, Paul, Ed and I were to convene at the Ministry of Economic Affairs where I was to deliver a formal debriefing lecture for Karma Tshering, director of the Department of Hydromet Services, and his colleagues. Tshewang met us at our hotel, where he dressed David and me each in a formal gho, which is the traditional male dress of Bhutan (and also requires a fundamental level of skill to put on, which neither David or I possessed).
Ed and Paul were simultaneously dressed, and we were escorted to the department building. I delivered the debriefing lecture for the glacial geology portion of our research. In previous days, while we were still on the trail, Summer and Ed had delivered debriefing lectures on the glaciology and dendrochronology components of the field work.
My lecture focused primarily on the motivations, methods, and expectations for our attempt to discern the record of past glacier fluctuations from Rinchen Zoe. Of particular interest to Karma and his colleagues was the potential for reconstructing fluctuations of mountain snowlines in response to ongoing climate change.
Hydropower in Bhutan is generated largely from runoff resulting from melting snow in the mountains. Thus, any upward migration of the mountain snowline will serve to shrink the existing snowpack available to melt throughout the summer, and diminish the amount of power that can be generated.
Glacier extents hinge on the altitude of mountain snowlines. So if we can use the record of past mountain glaciation to determine how past climate changes have influenced mountain snowline altitudes, then it will be easier to anticipate how rapidly the snowpack will diminish with future warming.

"U.S. website The Onion has named North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un as the 'Sexiest Man Alive' for the year 2012," the story announces before quoting the Onion's sarcastic write-up:
"With his devastatingly handsome, round face, his boyish charm, and his strong, sturdy frame, this Pyongyang-bred heartthrob is every woman's dream come true. Blessed with an air of power that masks an unmistakable cute, cuddly side, Kim made this newspaper's editorial board swoon with his impeccable fashion sense, chic short hairstyle, and, of course, that famous smile," it said.
"He has that rare ability to somehow be completely adorable and completely macho at the same time," said Marissa Blake-Zweiber, editor of the Onion Style and Entertainment.
The accompanying 55-page slideshow includes images of Kim in varying degrees of sexiness?riding a horse, posing with military leaders, aiming a rifle, riding a horse and, uh, riding a horse.
Of course, this isn't the first time the Onion's sarcasm has been lost in translation.
In 2002, the Beijing Evening News picked up an Onion story asserting the U.S. Congress would leave Washington "unless a new Capitol is built."
In September 2011, Capitol Police in Washington were forced to investigate after the Onion's Twitter feed teased a satirical article?"Congress Takes Group of Schoolchildren Hostage"?with a series of tweets proclaiming breaking news of a hostage situation inside the Capitol building.

Harry Green receives the highest award given by the Mineralogical Society of America
RIVERSIDE, Calif. Harry W. Green II, a distinguished professor of the Graduate Division in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of California, Riverside, has been awarded the 2012 Roebling Medal by the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA).
The medal is the highest award given by the society for scientific eminence as represented primarily by scientific publication of outstanding original research in mineralogy. It was presented to Green at the annual meeting of the MSA in Charlotte, NC, on Nov. 6. He also was made a "Life Fellow of the Society."
Previous winners of the medal include Nobel laureate Linus Pauling, one of the most influential chemists in history, and leaders in mineralogy, petrology and mineral physics.
Early in his career, Green was the first to use transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in geophysics. As a consequence, he was the first to examine directly the crystal defects that carry the "memory" of the basic physics involved in natural deformations and mineral reactions information that is stored at the finest scales (micro- and nano-scale). He accomplished this primarily by comparing high-pressure experimental results with observations of natural rocks.
"I see this recognition as confirmation that my novel approach has borne significant fruit and therefore it is a great honor and brings me great personal satisfaction," said Green, an eminent geologist and geophysicist.
Green is only the second UC Riverside faculty member to receive the Roebling Medal. George Tunell (1900-1996), a highly respected research geologist who received the medal in 1973, was a faculty member at UCR for a few years at the end of his career.
At the MSA meeting held earlier this month, Green received a gold medal engraved with his name and the resemblance of Washington A. Roebling, the chief engineer during the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, a mineral collector, and a significant friend of the MSA in its early years.

- Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund clinched agreement on a new debt target for Greece on Monday in a breakthrough towards releasing an urgently needed tranche of loans to the near-bankrupt economy, officials said.
After nearly 10 hours of talks at their third meeting on the issue in as many weeks, Greece's international lenders agreed to reduce Greek debt by 40 billion euros, cutting it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, via a package of steps.

The IRS has set annual contribution limits for IRAs, 401(k)s and other retirement plans higher for 2013, and made other important adjustments for inflation as well. Here is an overview of some notable changes just announced.
The 2013 IRA contribution limit: $5,500. This is a $500 increase from 2012, and it applies to both Roth and traditional IRAs. The IRA catch-up contribution limit for those 50 and older remains $1,000.1,3
The 2013 contribution limit for 401(k), 403(b), TSP & most 457 plans: $17,500. For the second year in a row, we see a $500 increase. The catch-up contribution limit on these plans for participants 50 and older remains $5,500.1,2
The phase-out range on Roth IRA contributions has increased. It starts $5,000 higher in 2013 than in 2012 for married couples filing jointly ($178,000-$188,000) and $2,000 higher for single filers and heads of household ($112,000-$127,000).3
The phase-out range on deductible contributions to traditional IRAs has risen. In 2013 it increases by $1,000 for single filers ($59,000-$69,000) and $3,000 for married couples filing jointly ($95,000-$115,000), provided the spouse making the contribution is covered by a workplace retirement plan. If not, the deduction is phased out if the couple?s income is between $178,000-$188,000 ? up $5,000 from 2012.1,3
The annual gift tax exclusion rises to $14,000 next year. The IRS has kept this at $13,000 for several years; no more. In 2013, a taxpayer can gift up to $14,000 each to as many different people as he or she wishes, tax-free.4
You may be able to deduct a greater portion of LTCI premiums. For 2013, the deductible portion of eligible long term care insurance premiums that may be included as medical expenses on Schedule A rises. The new limits are $360 for taxpayers 40 or less, $680 for taxpayers aged 41-50, $1,360 for taxpayers aged 51-60, $3,640 for taxpayers aged 61-70, and $4,550 for taxpayers age 71 or older.4,5

SBU Students Respond to Soccer Club Petition - Three Village Patch
A combination of an online petition and an on-paper petition have amassed approximately 4,000 signatures in support of the Three Village Soccer Club's mission to negotiate what it considers a fair deal for the use of the South P Lot soccer park at Stony Brook University.
At stake is approximately half of a 25.7-acre soccer park that the Three Village Soccer Club has spent more than $1 million to build, maintain and operate since the 1980s. But there's a lot at stake for the students, too, and last week, members of the University's club sports teams gathered together to respond to the soccer club's petition.
Emily Edwards, a Binghamton native who is a member of the women's club lacrosse team, said the lack of field space often prevents the club teams from being competitive. The various club teams ? 30 of them ? play against club teams from other colleges and universities from other areas, including upstate and out-of-state. Stony Brook students pay a recreation fee to have access to recreational amenities on campus. But each of the Stony Brook teams rarely has an adequate practice field all to themselves.
"Because we are competing with schools who practice on regulation size fields every day, in order to keep up with them, this is something that's essential," said Edwards, who listed Hofstra, Princeton, Army, Syracuse, Binghamton, NYU and even schools from central Florida as the club team's typical opponents.
"There was a worry. We almost got the fields canceled on us for the game," she said. "These people bought plane tickets to be up here. You can't just cancel it because intramural sports need the field. It's tough."
The students said Stony Brook lags behind other schools in the facilities available to student athletes who aren't members of NCAA teams.
"Every school we go to has rugby facilities that are strictly for the rugby team and they have sports club facilities for other sports clubs," said PJ Abelein, a native of Port Jefferson who is one of the rugby team's 80 players. "Having that on campus would be amazing."
For Anna Lubitz, a 2010 Ward Melville graduate who played for seven years in the Three Village Soccer Club, the soccer field issue hits close to home. She is now a Stony Brook University student and president of the Undergraduate Student Government, representing groups of students who would like to use the fields.
"I see both viewpoints," Lubitz said. "But ultimately, the students need the space. We have to find a common ground to share. ... We're one community. We have to work together."
Derek Cope, president of the sports club council, called club sports the perfect alternative to Division I athletics, and said his club soccer team kept him from transferring to another school.
"It's really a recruiting tool for the university as well," he said. "If I was an incoming freshman and I saw a really nice facility such as this, that could make the decision for me to come here. ... Being able to have club aspect to it totally changes your college experience. For me, having the club kept me here. I think a lot of people can say that as well."
The students are no strangers to petitions themselves. During the 2011-2012 academic year, more than 3,300 students signed one to ask the Undergraduate Student Government to help them find more recreational field space for the club sports teams.
Cope said the title of the Three Village Soccer Club's petition ? "Stop Stony Brook University from Taking Our Fields!" ? is misleading.
"Stony Brook University owns the property. It's our field to start with and they're making it seem like we're taking the fields from them completely," he said. "It's only one section. ... It's not that we want to kick them out of here and say this is all for us. We want to share it. We want something we can call our own because we've never had that before."
But Mitch Pally, president of the Three Village Soccer Club, said he doesn't feel the petition is misleading. He said the issue isn't about the University wanting to use four of the fields in general ? rather, it's about the University wanting exclusive use.
"The University wants exclusive use of [fields 1 through 4] starting in the fall of 2013," he said. "That?s what the draft permit says, so it is not misleading in any way, shape or form."
He said the students and the soccer club were able to accommodate each other's needs during the spring and fall seasons of 2012 by scheduling events ahead of time, and said that relationship could easily continue to exist.
"They gave us their schedule which we accommodated, we gave them our schedule which they accommodated," Pally said. "Everyone gets what they need out of it. We?re more than happy to accommodate that. But that?s not what the University said to us they want."
The soccer club is still pushing for a 15-year agreement to use the fields, along with a reprieve from paying the University around $60,000 a year to rent the space so that it can finance the building of new fields along Stony Brook Road.
"They want us to continue to pay the same amount of rent, and in fact the rent goes up each year. They want us to pay for most of the work to replace the fields," Pally said. "And they don?t want to give us a permit long enough to make sure the kids will have a place to play. [We] need the lease because if we build the fields I want to guarantee we?re going to be here."

Obama may get chance to end Benghazi PR disaster
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House could finally have its chance to close the books on its Benghazi public relations disaster, as key Republicans signal they might not stand in the way of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to become the next secretary of state.
"I think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told "Fox News Sunday." ''But she's not the problem. The problem is the president of the United States," who, McCain said, misled the public on terrorist involvement.
Rice is widely seen as President Barack Obama's top pick to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the nation's top diplomat. But Rice's reputation took a serious hit this fall when she relied on unclassified talking points provided by the intelligence community that portrayed the attack in Benghazi, Libya, as a spontaneous assault by a mob angered by an anti-Muslim video posted on YouTube.
Intelligence officials quickly amended their assessment to conclude the attack hadn't been related to other film protests across the Middle East. But that revised narrative was slow to reach the public, prompting Republicans to allege a White House cover-up ahead of the Nov. 6 election.
The attack killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, a State Department computer specialist and two former Navy SEALs who were working as contract security guards.
McCain's remarks were in contrast to his previous stance that Rice wasn't qualified to replace Clinton, who is expected to step down soon, and that he would do "whatever is necessary" to block Rice's possible nomination.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain's close friend and colleague on the Senate Armed Services Committee, told ABC's "This Week" he still suspects the White House intentionally glossed over obvious terrorist links in the attack to keep voters from questioning Obama's handling of national security.
But instead of repeating his prior assertion that he was "dead set" against a Rice promotion, Graham suggested he looked forward to hearing her out. If Rice were nominated, "there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others," said Graham, R-S.C.
The subtle shift in GOP tenor on Rice could be the result of internal grumblings on how far to take party opposition. Democrats picked up extra Senate seats in the election to maintain their narrow majority, making it that much harder for the remaining 45 Republicans to block the president's nominees.
One senior GOP Senate aide said Sunday that Republicans hadn't united against Rice and were not convinced she was worth going after. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the aide was not authorized to speak publicly on internal GOP deliberations.
