MorningFile: McGuinty to meet with Ford and Blair, Elephant flight delayed again

Premier Dalton McGuinty is going to meet with Mayor Rob Ford and Police Chief Bill Blair today to discuss the appropriate reaction to the shootings last week on Danzig Street. It's not clear whether McGuinty will be able to make more money available for social programs, but Ford isn't fond of those anyway. McGuinty is calling for a ban on handguns, but the only person who can do that is Stephen Harper. Ford is also meeting with Harper soon, but is unlikely to get his wishes granted there either.

An SUV in North York drove off the road and fell nine metres in to a ravine yesterday afternoon. A 51-year-old woman was driving along Finch near Bayview when her SUV skidded off the road and went down the ravine, knocking over trees in its wake. Police say they don't know how it all happened yet.

The elephants of the Toronto Zoo (and the people who want them sent to California) are now being told they'll have to wait until Toronto's hot weather cools down in the fall before they can be moved. This time it's the people of Zoocheck Canada saying that the risk of the animals overheating during the trip is too large. The Toronto Zoo's staff had been accused by some city councillors of foot-dragging over the elephant move in the past.

Scarborough residents are being assured that the taxpayer will cover any damages that the City is liable for after the flooding of many basements in the area after a powerful storm more than a week ago. A pair of Scarborough councillors are saying that the city needs to make the area a priority for replacing ageing infrastructure that wasn't intended to service the current levels of development.

And today's example of the Law of Unintended Consequences: when the federal government stopped allowing adult entertainers to get visas to stay and work in Canada, they probably didn't expect the adult entertainment industry to start looking for replacement workers in GTA high schools instead. With the supply of dancers from Eastern Europe and South America cut off, Toronto's strip clubs are looking for dancers just getting ready to move to university?and has a way for them to help pay for tuition as well. Just a guess, but this is probably not what Stephen Harper intended.

CORRECTION: This post initially misspelled Stephen Harper's first name in the first item.
