Birmingham opponents to rally against federal contraception - al.com

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama --? Opponents of the Health and Human Services mandate that will require employ?ers to provide insurance coverage for con?traception and sterilization will rally today in Kelly Ingram Park at noon.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange and EWTN President Michael Warsaw will speak at the rally, among others.

"It's sending a clear message to the Obama administration that we're not going to comply with this," said Jim Pinto, direc?tor of the Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally in Birmingham.

Pinto said similar rallies are being held at noon in Huntsville, Mobile and other cities across the country.

Strange filed a motion March 22 to join a federal lawsuit initiated Feb. 9 by EWTN Global Catholic Network challenging the federal contraception coverage mandate imposed by the Obama Administration as part of its health care law.

EWTN filed its lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Birmingham against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, trying to stop the imposition of the contra?ception mandate. The mandate would re?quire nearly all employers, including reli?gious organizations such as Catholic hospitals, to provide health insurance for their employees that covers contraception, including in some cases what Catholics consider abortion-inducing drugs.

The Obama administration has advised the offerings are part of women's health and should be provided by health care plans. Representatives for EWTN, which has 340 employees, said it would stand to be fined more than $600,000 the first year for refus?ing to comply with the requirements that vi?olate its beliefs, and would continue to be fined in future years.
